OKX Review For Canadians

Last updated October 2, 2026

Fact-checked by Canadian crypto tradersHow we testWe may earn a commission

Status Notice: I could not confirm from OKX's own pages that it serves Canadian residents, and it is widely reported to have stopped serving Canadians in 2023. I do not recommend opening an account, and I do not rate it. Platforms I do recommend: Coinbase, Kraken and Wealthsimple Crypto.

OKX is not a platform I recommend for Canadians, and I do not score it. It is widely reported that OKX stopped offering services to Canadian residents on March 24, 2023, with a deadline of June 22, 2023 to close positions and withdraw. OKX's Terms of Service do not name Canada, but they point to a separate Risk and Compliance Disclosure for the list of unavailable jurisdictions. If you are in Canada, use a platform on the CSA authorized list instead.

  • Best registered pick: Coinbase (CSA Restricted Dealer, free Interac e-Transfer)
  • Best for derivatives-style trading: not available to Canadians on registered platforms, with Coinbase's derivatives limited to qualified clients
  • Best Bitcoin-only: Bull Bitcoin

My scoreNone. Unranked.

Is OKX Available In Canada?

I could not verify it, and the evidence points to no. The OKX Terms of Service I read say the company may not make all services available in all markets and send you to a Risk and Compliance Disclosure for the full list. That separate document is where a country restriction would be written down. Third-party summaries say Canada appears on OKX's restricted list and that Canadian services were wound down in 2023 after the CSA tightened rules on stablecoins and client-asset handling. I treat that as a strong lead rather than an official confirmation, and I say so plainly. If you already have an account, check your email from OKX and the app notices, and withdraw anything you hold.

Why Is OKX Not Working In Canada?

Most reports tie it to the CSA's pre-registration undertakings and the 2023 stablecoin rules. Registered platforms must meet reserve, custody and disclosure terms, and the CSA gave a deadline of December 31, 2024 to delist non-compliant stablecoins. OKX chose not to go through registration, according to those reports. The practical result for you is the same whatever the reason: there is no Canadian-regulated OKX to sign up to. I cover the same question on my OKX FAQ page.

Do not try to get around it. Using an offshore exchange when its terms restrict your country can get your account frozen, and you would have no Canadian investor protection. I do not give advice on workarounds, and a VPN is against the platform's terms and puts your funds at risk.

What Do Offshore Exchanges Cost You In Protection?

A CSA-registered platform gives you a Canadian entity to complain to, regulator oversight, and rules on custody and disclosure. Cash at a CIPF member is covered up to a limit, though crypto is not. An offshore platform gives you none of that. The CSA authorized list is the check I run first on every exchange, and it is the reason the ranking on this site puts registered platforms ahead in safety, the factor 41% of my survey respondents named first. See the survey results.

How Can You Check Whether Any Exchange Is Allowed To Serve Canadians?

You do not have to take my word, or an exchange's, for it. Four checks take about ten minutes and I run them on every platform I rank.

  1. Open the CSA's list of crypto platforms authorized to do business with Canadians. At my last check the list's footer said it was updated on September 18, 2026. Search for the legal entity, not just the brand name.
  2. Open the CSA's banned platforms page, last refreshed September 18, 2024 at my check. KuCoin and Poloniex are on it.
  3. Search the FINTRAC money services business registry. FINTRAC publishes it as an open-data file with 8,662 rows. Registration here is an anti-money-laundering requirement, not securities approval.
  4. Read the exchange's own terms for a restricted-jurisdiction clause. BloFin, MEXC and Bitunix all name Canada there, and Bitget names all of Canada as a prohibited country.

If an exchange fails the first check and passes only the fourth, you have your answer. For OKX, I could not complete the checks the way I would want: its terms of service send readers to a separate disclosure, and I could not open that document. That is why this page says “could not verify” rather than “banned.”

What About Offshore Platforms That Still Serve Canadians?

The pattern is the same. An exchange can look Canadian-friendly in its marketing and still forbid Canadian residents in the small print, and a FINTRAC registration does not change that. It means the entity is registered to fight money laundering, not that Canadians are protected. If you want the full status of each, my ranking labels every one.

What Should You Do If You Already Have Funds On OKX?

  1. Log in and look for notices about your region. Read any email from OKX about Canadian residents, including spam folders.
  2. Check your balances, open orders and any staking or earn products. Close what can be closed.
  3. Withdraw to a wallet you control or to a CSA-registered Canadian exchange. Send a small test first and keep the transaction hash.
  4. Keep screenshots of balances and withdrawal confirmations for your tax records. The CRA says to keep crypto records for at least six years, including the date and time, Canadian dollar value and wallet addresses.
  5. If a withdrawal is blocked, ask support in writing and keep the replies. Do not pay anyone who contacts you offering to recover funds. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre warns about exactly that kind of second scam.

My guide to lost or stolen crypto recovery covers what to do if funds go missing, and the banned and departed exchanges guide lists the other names people ask about.

Why Does The Safety Factor Matter So Much?

In my reader survey of nearly 1,000 Canadians, 41% named safety and security as the single most important factor in choosing an exchange, ahead of fees at 21% and coin selection at 14%. I turned those percentages into the weights in my exchange scores, so a platform that cannot show a Canadian regulator loses most of its safety score before fees are even counted. See the survey results. OKX is a large global platform with a big coin list, and I understand why people search for it. But a big list does not offset an unclear legal footing.

What Changed For Canadians Choosing An Exchange In October 2026?

  • BitMEX shut down its exchange, so Canadians cannot trade there; only withdrawals remain.
  • Robinhood closed its WonderFi acquisition and Coinsquare and Bitbuy customers are moving to the Robinhood app.
  • Newton was admitted to CIRO membership as an investment dealer.
  • The CSA's cutoff for delisting non-compliant stablecoins passed; USDC stayed available because Circle committed to the terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is OKX Legal In Canada?

I could not verify any Canadian registration for OKX, and it is widely reported to have stopped serving Canadians in 2023. Using it from Canada carries account and recovery risk.

Can Canadians Use OKX?

Not as far as I can verify. Third-party reports say OKX stopped serving Canadian residents on March 24, 2023. OKX's Terms of Service do not name Canada but refer to a separate disclosure for unavailable markets.

When Did OKX Leave Canada?

Reports say OKX stopped serving Canadians on March 24, 2023 and gave users until June 22, 2023 to close positions and withdraw. I could not confirm those dates on OKX's own pages.

What Is The Best OKX Alternative In Canada?

Coinbase is my top pick: it is a CSA Restricted Dealer with free Interac e-Transfer. Kraken and Wealthsimple Crypto follow.

Is OKX Registered With FINTRAC Or The CSA?

I could not verify any OKX registration in Canada. Check the CSA authorized list and the FINTRAC registry before trusting any exchange.

Should I Use A VPN To Access OKX?

No. A VPN used to hide a Canadian location breaks the platform's terms and can lead to a frozen account with no Canadian protection.

How Do I Check If An Exchange Is Registered In Canada?

Search the legal entity on the CSA's authorized list, then check the CSA banned list and the FINTRAC registry. Read the exchange's terms for a restricted-jurisdiction clause.

OKX does not serve Canadian residents. I recommend Coinbase, #1 on my list
