To buy stablecoins in Canada, buy USDC on a CSA-registered platform. It is the one stablecoin Canadians can generally buy there. Under CSA Staff Notice 21-333, registered platforms may offer a stablecoin only if its issuer meets reserve, custody and disclosure terms, and Circle's USDC met them on December 4, 2024. Tether (USDT), DAI and RAI are barred, so never trust a claim that you can buy USDT on a registered Canadian exchange. Fund with Interac e-Transfer, then buy USDC.
Stablecoins are crypto pegged to a currency, usually the US dollar. Canadians use them to park value between trades, to send money abroad and to move into DeFi. The rules here are tighter than in the US, which is why most guides copied from American sites get it wrong. This page sticks to what the regulators and platforms actually allow.

How Do You Buy USDC In Canada Step By Step?
- Open a Coinbase account, which is the first CSA-registered exchange in the table, and verify your identity.
- Add CAD by Interac e-Transfer or EFT, both free at Coinbase.
- Open the Buy screen, search for USDC and enter an amount. Check the fee and spread in the order preview before you confirm.
- Confirm the buy. USDC is one of the assets with no purchase limit at Coinbase, along with BTC, ETH, SOL, BCH and LTC.
- To use it elsewhere, withdraw to a wallet or platform that supports it. Send a test amount first.

Can You Buy USDT In Canada?
Not on a registered platform. Coinbase suspended USDT, DAI and RAI trading for Canadians on August 31, 2023, Crypto.com ended USDT for Canadians on January 31, 2023, and Kraken's Canadian restriction list also bars DAI, USDT, PYUSD and several other stablecoins. NDAX is unclear: an older delisting announcement exists, but its API still showed USDT pairs as running, so I do not state either way. If someone offers you USDT as a Canadian, ask why. Offshore exchanges that list it name Canada as prohibited in their terms. Read the USDT page for the full position.
| Stablecoin | Canadian Platforms | Why |
|---|---|---|
| USDC | Yes: Coinbase, Kraken, Newton, NDAX and others | Circle committed to the CSA terms on December 4, 2024 |
| USDT | No on registered platforms | Delisted by Coinbase, Crypto.com and others; issuer has not met the terms |
| DAI | No on Coinbase and Kraken | Barred or restricted for Canadians |
| PYUSD, USDS, EURC and others | Not on Kraken's Canadian list | Not on the CSA's list of compliant issuers; verify before assuming |
Is There A Canadian Stablecoin?
A federal framework now exists. Finance Canada's stablecoin page says the framework was introduced in Budget 2025 through Bill C-15, which received Royal Assent on March 26, 2026. Under it, non-financial issuers of fiat-backed stablecoins must register with the Bank of Canada, keep a 1:1 reserve of high-quality liquid assets in the reference currency, publish redemption policies offering redemption at par, and follow rules on governance, risk management, data security and anti-money-laundering. They cannot offer interest or yield, or present a stablecoin as legal tender or an insured deposit. The Bank of Canada supervises issuers and maintains a public registry.
It is not live yet. Finance Canada expects supporting regulations to take 12 to 18 months from early 2026, with the framework coming into force in 2027. It also says securities regulators will keep governing the exchange and trading of fiat-backed stablecoins on crypto trading platforms, which is why the CSA's rules in this page still decide what you can buy today. I could not confirm a registered Canadian issuer, so I will not name one.
How Does A Stablecoin Work And Why Would Anyone Buy One?
A stablecoin holds reserves, such as cash or short-term securities, against each token so it can be redeemed near its peg. People buy them to move value fast, to hold dollars without a US bank account, to trade in and out of other coins, and to use DeFi. The risk is that the peg or reserves fail, and a stablecoin is not insured by CIPF. Do not treat USDC as a savings account.
Do You Pay Tax When You Buy Or Swap Into Stablecoins?
Buying USDC with CAD is a purchase, but swapping another coin for USDC is a disposition under the CRA's rules, so it can trigger a gain or loss. Keep records. See my tax guide. Also see my fuller overview on buying stablecoins in Canada.
How Do The Platforms Compare For Buying USDC?
| Platform | How To Pay In CAD | Notes For USDC Buyers |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | Free Interac e-Transfer and EFT | No purchase limit on USDC; CAD 30,000 rolling 12-month cap applies to other assets in ON, NB, NL, NS, PEI and the territories |
| Kraken | Free Interac e-Transfer deposits, CAD 10 e-Transfer withdrawal | Kraken Pro base tier 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker; Instant Buy 1% plus spread; CAD 30,000 net purchase limit for most clients, not in AB, BC, MB, QC or SK |
| Newton | Free Interac e-Transfer, wire and EFT | No trading fee shown; standard spread 1.00% to 1.60%, lower tiers for Signature members |
| NDAX | Free Interac e-Transfer and wire | Flat 0.20% trading fee |

USDC is the cheapest dollar-stablecoin route when you trade it on a low-fee venue, but the on-ramp matters too. A 1.875% simple-buy fee on Coinbase is a different cost from 0.20% on NDAX, so for a large purchase compare the order preview with the NDAX rate. For a small first purchase, the simplicity of the first app is usually worth the difference. Check each platform's page before you fund.
What Are The Risks Of Holding A Stablecoin?
- Reserve risk: the token holds its peg only if the reserves are there and redeemable. Read the issuer's reserve reports.
- Regulatory risk: Canadian rules decide which stablecoins can be offered. Tether (USDT) and DAI are barred on registered platforms today.
- Platform risk: a stablecoin on an exchange is a claim on that exchange. Crypto is not covered by CIPF.
- Counterparty risk in yield products: Finance Canada's framework bars issuers from paying interest, so any yield is the platform's promise, not the issuer's.
- Tax and records: swaps into and out of a stablecoin are dispositions, so record each one, including the Canadian dollar value on the day.
What Changed For Stablecoins In Canada In October 2026?
- Bill C-15 received Royal Assent, enacting the Stablecoin Act and giving the Bank of Canada supervision of stablecoin issuers. Finance Canada expects the framework to come into force in 2027.
- The CSA's cutoff for delisting non-compliant stablecoins passed.
- Circle announced it was the first stablecoin issuer to meet the new Canadian listing rules, keeping USDC available.
- Finance Canada's stablecoin framework page was last updated, describing Bank of Canada registration, 1:1 reserves and a 2027 expected in-force date.
