VirgoCX Review For Canadians: Is It Still Safe In 2026?

Last updated October 2, 2026

Fact-checked by Canadian crypto tradersHow we testWe may earn a commission

VirgoCX has had its CSA dealer registration suspended. My #1 pick: CoinbaseOpen Coinbase

Status Notice: VirgoCX no longer holds crypto for customers. It stopped its custodial service in 2025 and now runs only a non-custodial buy-and-sell service that it says is not offered under its securities dealer registration. The Ontario Securities Commission lists its restricted dealer registration as suspended effective November 24, 2025. It is still on the CSA list, but under terms requiring wind-down of its registrable business, so the investor protections of a registered custodial dealer do not apply to what it sells today. If you want a Canadian non-custodial option from my ranking, look at Bitcoin Well (visit) or Bull Bitcoin. This review is kept up to date for current and former users.

VirgoCX is a Toronto crypto broker, founded in 2018, that is real and FINTRAC-registered but no longer a custodial exchange. Since April 2025 it sends what you buy straight to a wallet you control. It stopped holding customer crypto, and balances left after its June 16, 2025 deadline were sold and paid out. It is not one of the ten platforms in my ranking and I do not give it a score. For most people a CSA-registered custodial platform is the safer starting point.

  • Coinbase (9.8/10): registered, custodial, easiest app
  • Bitcoin Well (6.4/10): the same send-to-your-own-wallet model, Bitcoin only
  • NDAX (7.8/10): flat 0.20% fee, CIRO investment dealer

What Is VirgoCX In Plain Terms?

VirgoCX was founded in Toronto in 2018 and, until 2025, worked like any custodial exchange: you deposited Canadian dollars, bought crypto and saw a balance in your account. It underwent a fundamental change on April 4, 2025, when it wound down custodial accounts and moved to a non-custodial trading service. In practical terms, VirgoCX no longer holds your crypto and no longer carries the custody insurance that covered the old accounts. Its new service is explicitly not offered under its registration as a securities dealer, and you must provide your own wallet.

It still offers a wide menu of coins, Interac funding, spread-based pricing, an OTC desk through VirgoCX Wealth and TradingView-powered advanced trading. This is a platform that has changed materially since most Canadians last used it, so read the rest of this review carefully before you decide, even if you used VirgoCX a few years ago.

What Happened To VirgoCX In April 2025?

VirgoCX review
VirgoCX, the platform I have held an account with since 2022

On April 4, 2025, VirgoCX began winding down its custodial accounts and moved to a non-custodial trading service. VirgoCX no longer holds your crypto. The investor protections that come with a CSA-registered securities dealer no longer cover the new service, and you must provide your own wallet address before you place a buy order.

I want to be clear about what this means in practice, because most Canadians who remember VirgoCX from 2022 or 2023 are remembering a different product.

Under the old model, you deposited CAD, bought Bitcoin, and VirgoCX held that Bitcoin on your behalf with a third-party custodian. Your account showed a balance. Your interaction with the platform was similar to using a bank: deposit money, get a balance, withdraw when you want.

Under the new model, you deposit CAD, buy Bitcoin, and the Bitcoin goes to a wallet address you registered before placing the order. VirgoCX is a broker that facilitates the purchase and dispatches the crypto. It never holds it. That removes custodial risk, and it also removes the custodial protections. VirgoCX's own announcement told users they would not have the same investor protections that apply to custodial accounts offered by registered securities dealers.

Why did this happen? VirgoCX's CSA relief was time-limited, with an expectation that it would move to a CIRO investment dealer. That did not complete. Instead of closing or operating in limbo, VirgoCX moved to a model it can run outside its dealer registration. The CSA list describes it as "subject to terms and conditions requiring wind-down of registrable business." The deadline for custodial customers to move or sell was set at June 16, 2025, after an earlier announced date of July 3, 2025. Assets remaining after the deadline were force-sold.

This does not make VirgoCX a scam. It makes it a different kind of service. Think of it more like Bull Bitcoin or Bitcoin Well: a broker that processes your purchase and sends crypto to your own wallet. That model has real advantages, but it is not the same as a CIRO-registered custodial exchange.

Is VirgoCX Legit And Safe For Canadians In 2026?

A VirgoCX review screenshot showing security features for information, system and funds
VirgoCX's security overview

VirgoCX is legitimate in the sense that it is a real operating company with active FINTRAC registrations. It is not safe in the sense of giving you the custodial investor protections of a CIRO-registered dealer. That distinction matters, and anyone using VirgoCX after April 2025 should understand it.

FINTRAC registration requires anti-money laundering and know-your-customer compliance. It does not set custody standards, capital requirements or investor protection. Those come from the CSA and CIRO frameworks, and the non-custodial service operates outside VirgoCX's dealer registration.

What still applies:

  • Two-factor authentication on sensitive account actions
  • Transaction monitoring and FINTRAC anti-money laundering compliance
  • No custody risk, because VirgoCX does not hold your crypto after purchase

What no longer applies after April 2025:

  • The custodial crime insurance that used to cover coins VirgoCX held for you (it holds nothing now)
  • The cold storage custody arrangement (the coins go to your wallet)
  • The investor protections of a registered securities dealer on your crypto

The honest summary: VirgoCX is a legitimate broker for buying crypto in Canada if you can look after your own wallet. For regulated custody, NDAX, Kraken and Coinbase are the appropriate alternatives.

What Is VirgoCX's Track Record In Canada?

VirgoCX was founded in Toronto in 2018, became one of Canada's early CSA-registered platforms in May 2022, and changed its business model on April 4, 2025.

How Do You Sign Up And Verify On VirgoCX?

Registration with VirgoCX
The VirgoCX sign-up form from my 2022 test

Sign-up takes an email, password, government-issued photo ID and proof of address, plus answers about your investment objectives and finances. Compliance staff review documents manually, so verification can be slower than automated systems. Under the non-custodial model you must register a wallet address before your first buy order.

What you need to open an account:

  • Email address and password
  • Government-issued photo ID (driver's licence or passport)
  • Proof of address (utility bill, bank statement or credit card statement dated within 90 days)
  • Personal details: name, address, phone number, employment information and source of funds
  • Survey questions: risk tolerance, investing experience and intended account use
  • A crypto wallet address, before placing any buy order
Confirming government ID with VirgoCX
Uploading ID to VirgoCX

Compliance staff review documents by hand, which makes verification slower than platforms with automated ID checks. In my experience most accounts were approved within hours to one business day. The questionnaire is a Canadian regulatory requirement, and your answers may affect your initial limits. If you need a faster start, Shakepay or NDAX both use largely automated KYC.

The wallet address requirement is the step that trips up newcomers to self-custody. You cannot complete a buy order without it. If you do not have a wallet, read our guide to the best crypto wallets for Canadians before signing up.

How Do You Add Funds To VirgoCX?

The method VirgoCX has long recommended is Interac e-Transfer, which its support article describes as free with no funding minimum. That article dates from 2021 and I could not re-confirm it after the 2025 switch, so check the deposit screen before sending. Wire transfers, card payments and crypto deposits have also been offered. I could not check the current limits or fees on the official site in October 2026, so I give no numbers for them below.

Interac E-Transfer (Recommended)

Interac e-Transfer is CAD only and runs around the clock. VirgoCX gives you deposit instructions inside your account, and your bank's standard Interac daily limits apply. In my experience the money arrives within the hour, and using the "request money" style of transfer, where the platform offers it, tends to be quicker. A deposit that gets rejected and returned has carried a fee in the past, so double-check your bank details before the first transfer, and make sure the name on the bank account matches the name on your VirgoCX profile.

Wire Transfer

Wires are free to receive on most platforms and slow: expect one to two business days, and your own bank may charge an outgoing wire fee. Wires are the route for larger amounts and for USD, and each currency has its own minimum, so read the in-app screen. Because the return and rejection fees that apply to bad details are meaningful, wires are the method where a typo hurts most.

Credit And Debit Card

I noted card deposits being added after the 2025 transition. Card funding on crypto platforms is usually the most expensive way in, because the processor's cut lands on you before any spread. I could not confirm the current fee, so treat a card deposit as an urgent small top-up, never a way to buy in size. Use Interac whenever you can.

Crypto Deposit

Crypto deposits are accepted and free at the platform level, though the blockchain charges its own network fee. Confirmation times are those of each network. Always pick the matching network for the asset, because a wrong-network deposit can mean a support ticket and a long wait.

CAD Withdrawals

Under the non-custodial model you do not hold a crypto balance, but you can still sell and send the CAD to your bank, by Interac or wire. In my June 2026 test, selling $100 of ETH put the CAD in my bank by Interac within the hour. The withdrawal fee depends on the method, so verify the schedule in the app, and confirm your bank details are right, because a withdrawal returned by your bank can carry a fee.

What Are VirgoCX's Fees?

A VirgoCX review screenshot showing deposit fees and processing times for Canadian dollars
VirgoCX deposit fee table from my review

VirgoCX uses a spread-based model with no explicit trading commission, so the cost is built into the buy and sell price. The official fee page could not be checked in October 2026 because it blocks automated access, so I do not quote a current schedule. What I can give you is my own test from June 2026, described below, and the structure of the costs.

What A Real Transaction Costs

In my June 2026 review I bought $100 of BTC on VirgoCX after the non-custodial transition. At the quoted 0.95% spread that cost me $0.95. The Bitcoin arrived in my registered external wallet within minutes of payment clearing. I then sold $100 of ETH at the same 0.95%, another $0.95, and the CAD reached my bank via Interac within the hour, less the withdrawal fee. The all-in cost on a $100 round trip was a few dollars. On a $500 trade the math is similar, but a flat withdrawal fee matters less as a share of the trade. Those are my test figures from that date, not a current fee schedule.

The Costs To Look For

  • The spread. It sits inside the quote on the trade screen. Compare it with another quote before you confirm. Spreads on volatile days, weekends and holidays have been wider on platforms like this.
  • Funding method. Interac has been free. Cards cost more. A returned deposit has carried a rejection fee.
  • Withdrawal fee. A small flat fee has applied to Interac withdrawals, and wires depend on size.
  • Network fees. Because crypto goes straight to your wallet, you pay the blockchain's fee at the time of purchase, but you skip a separate exchange withdrawal fee.

Virgo PLUS And Virgo Boost

VirgoCX has sold a daily subscription called Virgo PLUS that discounts the spread, in tiers, and a Virgo Boost rewards programme where you earn points for in-app tasks such as games and surveys and redeem them for spread discounts. The terms have changed over time, and after the April 2025 transition, rewards paid in satoshis were paused. Read the current rules in the app. A subscription only pays off if you trade often enough that the spread savings beat the daily fee, and for an occasional buyer the standard rate is fine.

What Does A Typical VirgoCX Purchase Look Like?

The flow under the non-custodial model is short but unforgiving. You register a wallet address, deposit CAD, pick a coin on Quick Trade, check the quote and confirm. The coins then go on-chain to your own wallet, usually within minutes of your payment clearing. There is no balance to leave sitting on the platform, so the order of operations matters: set up and test your wallet first, send a small buy to it, confirm it arrives, and only then buy in size.

Selling works the other way around. You send the coin to the address VirgoCX gives you, confirm the quote, and the CAD goes to your bank. Copy and check addresses character by character, because nobody can reverse a payment sent to the wrong address.

How Does VirgoCX Make Money?

VirgoCX earns revenue through the spread on every buy and sell, plus subscription, deposit and withdrawal fees. The spread is built into the price you see before you confirm. There are no separate commission lines, and secondary income comes from the Virgo PLUS subscriptions, withdrawal fees, card deposit fees and rejection fees on failed fiat transactions.

The spread model is standard for broker-style Canadian crypto platforms. You always see the cost before confirming, which is more transparent than platforms that hide their margin inside a "market price" with no disclosure. In my test the BTC and ETH spread looked competitive with spread-based platforms like Newton and cheaper than Shakepay. I cannot say the same for altcoins, because I did not test them.

What Features Does VirgoCX Offer Canadians In 2026?

VirgoCX review: screenshot of the VirgoCX website homepage
The VirgoCX homepage

After April 2025, VirgoCX offers a non-custodial service with a long coin list, a one-click Quick Trade screen, an Advanced Trade screen with TradingView charts, recurring buys, an OTC desk called VirgoCX Wealth and a referral programme. Staking, grid trading, USD and CAD foreign exchange and USDC pairs were removed in the transition.

A Long Coin List, Sent To Your Wallet

VirgoCX has listed far more coins than the 50 I cited in my first review. The list has included BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL, ADA, DOGE, AVAX, DOT, LINK, SHIB, LTC, BCH, UNI and AAVE. I did not re-count it in October 2026, so check the asset list on virgocx.ca. Under the non-custodial model, purchased coins go straight to your registered wallet. You cannot hold them on VirgoCX or see a VirgoCX-held balance of your crypto.

Quick Trade Versus Advanced Trade

Two interfaces, one account. Quick Trade is a one-click market order: enter an amount, click buy, confirm. It is designed for speed and simplicity. Advanced Trade is the full TradingView charting terminal with an order book, limit orders, stop-limit orders and recurring buys. Both work on web and in the mobile app. For weekly dollar-cost averaging, the recurring buy on Advanced Trade handles it automatically.

Virgo PLUS Subscription

A daily-fee subscription in two tiers, Basic and Pro, each discounting the spread, with the Pro tier giving the bigger discount. Qualifying for the Basic tier has required a minimum level of recent trading volume. If you trade often enough that the subscription costs less than the spread savings, it is worth using. For occasional buyers, the standard spread is fine.

Virgo Boost Programme

You earn Virgo Bits by completing in-app tasks such as games and surveys. Bits can be redeemed for spread discounts and merchandise. It is a gamification layer that rewards engagement with small perks. After the April 2025 transition, Bits could no longer be redeemed for satoshis, because the BTC reward was paused. Redeeming for tier upgrades still worked when I last looked.

Referral Programme

Two models have been offered: a fixed reward per referred user, or a share of VirgoCX's spread revenue from each trade the referred user makes. The revenue-share model is worth more to active referrers who bring in regular traders. Check the current terms in the app.

VirgoCX Wealth (OTC Desk)

For large transactions, with personalized service, negotiated pricing and foreign currency exchange for USD and CAD clients. Contact VirgoCX Wealth through the platform for eligibility and quotes.

What Was Removed In April 2025

  • Grid trading: cancelled, and open grid orders were closed
  • USD and CAD foreign exchange: discontinued
  • USDC trading pairs: delisted
  • NFT marketplace: no longer actively promoted after the transition
  • Staking: not possible, because VirgoCX no longer holds assets for you
  • Crypto gift card redemption to sats: paused

How Does VirgoCX Compare To Other Canadian Exchanges?

After the switch, VirgoCX is most comparable to Bull Bitcoin and Bitcoin Well in its model, but with a longer coin list. Against custodial regulated platforms like NDAX and Kraken, it trades investor protection for direct ownership.

VirgoCX Versus My Ranked Platforms
ExchangeScoreCustodyFeesCoinsStatus
VirgoCXNot rankedNon-custodial since 2025Spread, official page not checked this monthNot checkedOn CSA list under wind-down terms

Kraken9.2CustodialKraken Pro 0.40% maker / 0.80% takerAbout 490CSA-registered

Put simply, VirgoCX now sits between two groups. Against Bitcoin Well and Bull Bitcoin, which also send coins to your wallet, it offers a longer coin list but it is not in my ranking and I have no verified spread to set against theirs. Against NDAX and Kraken, which keep your crypto in regulated custody, it gives you direct ownership and gives up investor protection, staking and a clear published fee schedule. Which side of that trade matters depends on whether you would rather trust a company or trust yourself with a seed phrase.

What Are The Biggest Complaints About VirgoCX?

VirgoCX has a thin Trustpilot presence, so I would not draw firm statistical conclusions. The complaint patterns I have seen across review platforms are slow or unhelpful support when something goes wrong, confusion around the non-custodial transition for existing users, account restrictions during compliance review, and altcoin spreads that look high next to alternatives. Positive reviews consistently praise ease of use and fast deposits.

Confusion Around The Non-Custodial Transition

This is the biggest issue facing VirgoCX. Many Canadians who signed up under the custodial model did not realize how much changed. Some found their crypto had been sold and the proceeds sent to their bank after the deadline, because they had not set up a wallet in time. VirgoCX gave notice and communicated the change, but the number of users caught off guard was a real problem. If you are an existing user, confirm which model your account runs under before placing any new order.

Customer Support Hours

When I tested it for my June 2026 review, live chat was limited to business hours, with email outside them and replies that could stretch overnight. I could not check the current hours in October 2026, so look at the Contact Us page. For a financial platform, limited hours are a weakness: if something goes wrong over a weekend, you may wait until Monday.

Rejection Fees On Failed Deposits

A fee has applied when a fiat deposit is rejected and returned. Most people hit by it were using bank details that did not match their VirgoCX account name, or sending from accounts that did not pass its verification check. Verify your details carefully before you send, especially for Interac, where name matching can be an issue.

Altcoin Spread Is Higher Than Competitors

Altcoin spreads have been higher than Newton's and well above NDAX's flat 0.20%. For frequent altcoin buyers, the cost difference compounds. Check the quote against another platform before you buy anything outside Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Scam Awareness

The non-custodial transition made VirgoCX users a target for scammers who claim to help with wallet migration. VirgoCX will never contact you asking you to send crypto to a new address or share your private keys. Any contact claiming to be VirgoCX support and telling you to move your crypto to a new wallet is a scam. See our guide on common crypto scams in Canada.

How Is VirgoCX's Customer Support?

VirgoCX review: screenshot of the VirgoCX Contact Us page showing live chat and email
VirgoCX's Contact Us page

VirgoCX has offered live chat, email and multi-language support. In my experience testing VirgoCX, live chat during its hours was genuinely responsive. Routine questions about fees, deposits and wallet setup got accurate answers quickly, and the team knew the platform's features well.

The weakness is everything outside chat hours and everything involving compliance review, where manual checks add time. During the April 2025 transition, when thousands of Canadians were moving to self-custody and needed the most guidance, limited hours created a real bottleneck. If you are not comfortable with wallets, that is a reason to start elsewhere.

Who Should Use VirgoCX, And Who Should Not?

VirgoCX suits Canadians who are comfortable with self-custody and want a broad coin list bought straight to their own wallet. It is not for anyone who wants custodial protection, staking or the lowest altcoin fees.

VirgoCX Is A Good Fit If You:

  • Already have a wallet and are comfortable with self-custody
  • Want access to a long coin list through a non-custodial model and prefer owning your crypto outright from the moment of purchase
  • Are happy with a BTC or ETH spread like the one I tested, and will compare quotes yourself
  • Are making a large OTC transaction through VirgoCX Wealth
  • Want recurring buys in a TradingView-style interface
  • Accept that no registered-dealer protection covers your crypto here

VirgoCX Is Not The Right Choice If You:

  • Want custodial investor protection. Use NDAX, Kraken or Coinbase
  • Want staking. NDAX offers it and VirgoCX no longer can
  • Want the lowest possible fees on altcoins. Compare against NDAX at a flat 0.20% or Newton
  • Are a complete beginner without a wallet. The non-custodial model asks for self-custody knowledge on day one. Start with Coinbase or Wealthsimple Crypto
  • Need 24/7 live chat

What Changed For VirgoCX In October 2026?

  • : CSA amended decision, listing VirgoCX under terms requiring wind-down of its registrable business
  • : custodial wind-down begins and the non-custodial service launches
  • : deadline for custodial customers, after which remaining assets were force-sold
  • : current expiry of VirgoCX Direct Inc.'s FINTRAC registration

Is VirgoCX Worth It For Canadians In 2026?

VirgoCX review: screenshot of the VirgoCX website mission statement
VirgoCX's mission page

The VirgoCX of 2026 is not the VirgoCX of 2022. The custodial model, the custody partnership, the insurance, the securities-dealer protections, the staking, the grid trading, the USDC pairs and the foreign exchange are all gone. What remains is a non-custodial broker with a long coin list, advanced trading tools, a subscription discount scheme and an OTC desk.

The honest recommendation is that VirgoCX should not be the first choice for most Canadians in 2026. The regulatory uncertainty in the "wind-down of registrable business" note on the CSA list, the loss of investor protection, the removed features and the limited support hours all push it lower. It occupies a middle ground that may suit specific users, and it is no longer a top recommendation for general use.

That is still a real service for people who manage their own wallets. But VirgoCX should not be the first choice for most Canadians. The wind-down note on the CSA list, the loss of investor protection, the removed features and the limited support hours all push it down. For regulated custody, NDAX beats it on cost with stronger protection. For non-custodial Bitcoin, Bitcoin Well and Bull Bitcoin are in my ranking and VirgoCX is not.

VirgoCX Compared To Other Canadian Exchanges

Frequently Asked Questions

Is VirgoCX Legit And Still Safe To Use In 2026?

VirgoCX is a real, FINTRAC-registered company, but it no longer provides custodial investor protection. Since April 2025 it sends purchases to your own wallet, so your security depends on how you look after that wallet.

Does VirgoCX Still Hold My Crypto?

No. Custodial wind-down began on April 4, 2025, with a customer deadline of June 16, 2025. Remaining assets after that date were sold and the proceeds paid out. Purchases now go straight to a wallet address you register.

Why Is VirgoCX On The CSA List Under Wind-Down Terms?

The CSA lists VirgoCX as subject to terms and conditions requiring wind-down of its registrable business. VirgoCX's custodial relief was time-limited, and it moved to a non-custodial service that it says is not offered under its securities dealer registration.

What Are VirgoCX's Trading And Withdrawal Fees?

VirgoCX uses spreads built into the price instead of a trading commission. I could not read its fee page in October 2026, so I do not quote a figure. Check the quote on the trade screen before confirming. I could not read its withdrawal fee schedule either, so I do not quote one.

What Happened To Staking On VirgoCX?

It is gone. Staking needs a custodian to hold assets, and VirgoCX no longer holds customer crypto. NDAX offers staking in a regulated Canadian setting.

What Is A Good Alternative To VirgoCX?

For regulated custody, Coinbase or NDAX. For the same send-to-your-wallet model with Bitcoin, Bitcoin Well. My full ranking of crypto exchanges for Canadians shows where each one stands.

Can I Still Use VirgoCX If I Was An Existing Customer?

You can still buy and sell through the non-custodial service if your account is verified, but you need a wallet address registered first and nothing is held for you. Custodial balances were sold after the June 16, 2025 deadline. Confirm what your account can do before placing an order.

VirgoCX has had its CSA dealer registration suspended. I recommend Coinbase, #1 on my list
