Is Gate.io Allowed For Canadians?

No, not under its own terms. The user agreement says the restricted locations include the United States, Mainland China, Singapore, Canada, France, Germany and others. I said the same in my original review: Canada is on the list of disallowed countries, the same as the US, so they can block your account at any time and I would not recommend using it. What Does Gate.io Offer?

Gate.io launched in 2013 and became one of the largest exchanges in the world. What set it apart was a massive selection of altcoins and low fees. As someone who has been trading crypto since 2016, I also noticed that the platform is not beginner-friendly, which is a common reason people give up on it. If you take the time to learn the interface, which in my experience does not take long, you unlock access to thousands of altcoins. I used Gate.io specifically for that and found it useful for lesser-known coins.

It covered spot trading, futures, loans and staking, and had its own blockchain, Gatechain, and a native token, GateToken (GT). Holding GT lowered fees. Some of these services were never officially available to Canadians because of regulatory restrictions.

What Features Stood Out?

One feature I found interesting was the "big data" market tracker, which shows the fear and greed index, liquidations and contract positions. If you have never looked at market data this way, it is eye-opening, for instance showing whether more people are opening shorts than longs. For quick swaps there was Flash Swap, a one-click crypto-to-crypto trade that suits beginners.

It also had liquidity pools for earning interest, an NFT marketplace where you could buy, sell and mint NFTs, copy trading of top traders, and a referral program. Liquidity pool yields advertised in the thousands of percent are a warning sign, not a bargain.

How Did Verification And Funding Work?

To use every feature you had to verify. You signed up with a username, email and password, then chose individual or business verification, uploaded the front and back of a government ID and a selfie holding a note with your name and the date. Many people feel cautious about that last step, but it is standard at big exchanges.

Funding was the hard part. There was no CAD funding I could find. Fiat came in through third-party card providers such as Coinify, Banxa and Simplex, whether your Canadian bank allowed it or not, or through a USD bank transfer to an OTC desk. The simplest and cheapest approach was always to buy crypto on a Canadian-friendly exchange and transfer it across, which is also why holding balances there for long is a bad idea.

What Does Gate.io Cost?

Fees vary by trade type, 30-day volume and GateToken holdings. The base spot fee shows as 0.2% per pair. Crypto deposits are free and withdrawals carry network and per-coin fees. In my original review the OTC desk charged 3.5% plus a $30 wire fee for trades up to $2,000, and card payments carried third-party fees on top.

Is Gate.io Safe?

It has a reputation as a large exchange and uses a mix of hot and cold storage. That is separate from the risk you take as a Canadian: Gate.io says it complies with local rules, which is exactly why Canadian accounts can be restricted, and no Canadian regulator oversees your funds. Turn on two-factor authentication if you use it at all. I still recommend moving anything you want to keep to a personal wallet: not your keys, not your coins.

How Are The Gate.io App And Support?

App ratings when I reviewed it were weak, 2.5 stars on both iOS and Google Play, with reports of login problems, non-working 2FA and blank pages. I did not hit those problems myself, but I suggested the desktop version for a smoother experience. The mobile UI matches the desktop platform, so it is no easier on a phone.
