Part of my guide to crypto ETFs in Canada.

What Is FBTC?

FBTC is Fidelity Canada's spot bitcoin fund. Fidelity also offers trust versions with different tickers, so check you are looking at the ETF unit when you search. The "-U" unit trades in US dollars, which matters if you hold a USD account and want to avoid converting.

Is FBTC The Same As Bitcoin?

No, and the difference is practical. A fund holds the coins for you. You cannot send them to a wallet, you pay the MER each year, and you depend on the issuer's custody. In exchange you get bitcoin exposure inside a brokerage or registered account without any wallet work. If you want actual coins, buy on Coinbase, Kraken or Wealthsimple Crypto.

Which One Is Better, IBIT Or FBTC?

In Canada, the iShares Bitcoin ETF trades as IBIT on Cboe Canada and puts its money into the US iShares Bitcoin Trust, with a custody arrangement with Coinbase Prime. FBTC holds bitcoin directly with Fidelity's own storage. The fees are nearly identical.

I would not switch a position over a two-basis-point MER gap. Choose the one your brokerage lists without a currency conversion cost, and weigh the custody story. See the BTCX.B page for the pricier alternative and best bitcoin ETFs in Canada for the full list.

How Do You Buy FBTC In Canada?

  1. Open or use a self-directed brokerage account. Wealthsimple lists $0 commission on stock and ETF trading in non-registered, TFSA and RRSP accounts, per its pricing page.
  2. Search the ticker FBTC. Confirm it is the TSX listing in CAD.
  3. Place a limit order. ETF spreads can widen when markets are volatile.
  4. Keep your records. In a non-registered account, gains are taxed under normal CRA rules. See crypto taxation in Canada.

Can I Hold FBTC In A TFSA?

Fidelity's fund page says FBTC is available for TFSA and RRSP accounts. My explainer on holding crypto and crypto ETFs in a TFSA covers what that means for direct coins.

Pros

  • 0.35% MER, among the lowest in Canada
  • At least 98% held in cold storage
  • TFSA and RRSP eligible

Cons

  • You cannot withdraw bitcoin
  • Annual MER forever
  • High volatility, like the asset itself

How Does Fidelity Hold The Bitcoin?

Fidelity's page says the fund invests directly in bitcoin, with the security of Fidelity's in-house storage services, and that at least 98% is held in cold wallet storage. Cold storage means the keys are kept offline, away from internet-connected systems. The remainder, up to 2%, is what the fund can keep readily accessible to meet redemptions and costs. For a fund this size, with about $1.86 billion in net assets on Fidelity's page on October 1, 2026, in-house custody is a material design choice: it means one firm, Fidelity, is responsible for both managing the fund and safekeeping the coins.

Compare that with the iShares Bitcoin ETF in Canada, which invests in the US iShares Bitcoin Trust and has a custody arrangement with Coinbase Prime, and the Purpose fund, which uses cold storage with sub-custodians including Anchorage Digital Bank. Each design concentrates trust in different companies. None is risk-free, and the ETF Facts and prospectus are where each issuer lays it out.

What Do The Four Fidelity Bitcoin Units Mean?

Fidelity Bitcoin Units Listed On The Fund Page
UnitCurrencyType
FBTCCADETF
FBTC-UUSDETF
BTCCADTrust
BTCUUSDTrust

The ETF units trade on the TSX. Fidelity lists the trust units separately, with different tickers, and the ones that matter to most retail investors are FBTC and FBTC-U. If you hold a US-dollar account, FBTC-U avoids a currency conversion on the way in and out.

What Does The Fee Cut Tell You?

Fidelity reduced the management fee from 0.39% to 0.32% effective January 13, 2025. The MER, which includes other fund costs and sales tax, was 0.35% at March 31, 2026. Fee cuts matter because bitcoin ETFs compete almost entirely on cost and trust: the underlying asset is the same, so the cheapest credible fund tends to attract assets. On a C$10,000 holding, 0.35% is C$35 a year.

How Do Canadian Bitcoin ETFs Compare On Cost?

  • iShares IBIT0.33%
  • Fidelity FBTC0.35%
  • CI Galaxy BTCX.B0.71%
  • Purpose BTCC1.29%
  • 3iQ BTCQ1.47%

These bars show MER as published. Evolve's EBIT is left off because its issuer page gave a 0.75% management fee plus sales tax and I could not retrieve a MER figure.

What Risks Come With FBTC?

  • Volatility. Fidelity classes the fund as high volatility. Bitcoin can fall sharply, and so can the fund.
  • Single-custodian risk. Keeping custody in-house concentrates risk in one organisation.
  • No coin access. You hold units, not coins you can send.
  • Tracking and fees. The fund's return will trail bitcoin's by roughly its costs.
  • Tax in non-registered accounts. A sale triggers a capital gain or loss reported with your return.

Is FBTC Better Than Buying Bitcoin On An Exchange?

Neither is better. They serve different goals. An ETF belongs in a brokerage or registered account and suits someone who wants simple exposure and statements their accountant can read. An exchange purchase suits someone who wants coins they can store, move and use. If you go the exchange route, my registered picks are Coinbase, Kraken and Wealthsimple Crypto, and the full ranking compares fees. For a longer-term plan, many readers do both: an ETF in a TFSA and a small stack in a hardware wallet.

What Does Owning FBTC Look Like In Practice?

You see a ticker in your brokerage account, you buy whole units, and your statement shows the market value in CAD. Nothing arrives in a wallet. At tax time, a non-registered account produces a slip, and a TFSA or RRSP produces nothing to report on trades. If you buy through Wealthsimple, its pricing page states $0 commission on stock and ETF trades, so the cost to hold is the MER rather than a ticket fee. Dollar-cost averaging, a purchase every month, works the same way as with any fund.

What Should You Read Before You Buy FBTC?

Fidelity publishes ETF Facts and a prospectus for the fund. Read the custody section, the risk factors and the fee table, and check whether your account type is eligible. Fidelity's page says TFSA and RRSP are available, but your brokerage's listing is what finally decides what you can hold. The fee reduction press release from January 2025 is on Fidelity's site and confirms the 0.32% management fee.

What Changed For FBTC Lately?

  • : FBTC's MER was reported at 0.35%.
  • : Fidelity reduced the management fee from 0.39% to 0.32%.
  • : BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin ETF began trading in Canada.
