You cannot hold Bitcoin itself in an RRSP, but you can hold a Canadian-listed Bitcoin ETF in a self-directed RRSP. Coins you buy on an exchange cannot be moved into the account. A fund listed on a designated Canadian exchange can be a qualified investment, and Evolve says on its own page that its Bitcoin ETF is eligible for RRSPs and TFSAs. Confirm with your broker, because each fund and provider differs.
- Allowed: a Canadian-listed Bitcoin or Ether ETF, inside a self-directed RRSP
- Not allowed: coins from an exchange or hardware wallet
- Check: fund eligibility with your broker before you buy
The question "crypto RRSP Canada" is small in volume and big in consequences. Put the wrong asset in a registered account and you can face a penalty tax. This page explains what is allowed, how the ETF route works, and the costs.
| Option | In An RRSP? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin bought on an exchange | No | Coins held on an exchange cannot be transferred into an RRSP |
| Bitcoin in a hardware wallet | No | Same reason; a self-directed RRSP holds qualified investments, not wallets |
| Canadian-listed Bitcoin ETF | Generally yes | Qualified if listed on a designated exchange; Evolve says EBIT is RRSP and TFSA eligible |
| Canadian-listed Ether ETF | Generally yes | Confirm eligibility on the fund page and with your broker |
| US-listed crypto ETF | Check carefully | Eligibility depends on the exchange listing and your broker; I did not verify it |
| Crypto stocks on a designated exchange | Generally yes | A share in a company is not the same as owning crypto |
Can You Hold Bitcoin In An RRSP?
Not directly. Several Canadian tax-law write-ups say Bitcoin is not a qualified investment for an RRSP or TFSA, and I have not found a CRA publication that lists it as one. A non-qualified investment can trigger a penalty tax, and a registered account can lose its tax-sheltered status in serious cases, so do not test it. If you want crypto exposure inside the account, use a fund that is a qualified investment. If you want the coins themselves, hold them outside the RRSP and apply the CRA's rules for capital gains or business income, covered in my crypto taxation guide.
How Do I Buy A Bitcoin ETF Inside An RRSP?
- Open a self-directed RRSP at a brokerage. Wealthsimple lists $0 commission on stock and ETF trades in non-registered accounts, TFSAs and RRSPs.
- Contribute cash to the RRSP, or transfer an existing registered account.
- Search the fund by ticker and check it is listed on a Canadian exchange.
- Read the fund page for eligibility, fee and units (CAD or USD).
- Buy at a limit price during market hours, since ETFs trade like stocks.
What Do The ETFs Cost?
| Fund | Tickers | Management Fee | MER | As Of |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Purpose Bitcoin ETF | BTCC | 1.00% | 1.29% | Jun 30, 2026 |
| Evolve Bitcoin ETF | EBIT | 0.75% plus sales tax | Not retrieved | Issuer page |
| Fidelity Advantage Bitcoin ETF | FBTC | 0.32% | 0.35% | Mar 31, 2026 |
| CI Galaxy Bitcoin ETF | BTCX.B | 0.40% | 0.71% | Jun 30, 2026 |
| iShares Bitcoin ETF (Cboe Canada) | IBIT | 0.32% | 0.33% | Sep 30, 2026 |
| Purpose Ether ETF | ETHH | 1.00% | 1.42% | Jun 30, 2026 |
| CI Galaxy Ethereum ETF | ETHX.B | 0.40% | 1.14% | Jun 30, 2026 |
Published by each issuer on the dates shown, and the MER includes more than the management fee. This is not a recommendation.
What Is The Tradeoff Of Using An ETF Instead Of Coins?
Pros
- Fits a normal brokerage and RRSP, no wallet or exchange needed
- Tax-deferred growth inside the account, with tax when you withdraw
- Fund units are simple to rebalance
Cons
- You pay a management fee every year
- You cannot send fund units to a wallet or use them in apps
- If the fund is down, you cannot move coins out; you sell units
What If I Want To Buy Coins With My RRSP Money?
You cannot. RRSP withdrawals are taxed as income, so taking money out to buy crypto only makes sense if you accept that tax cost. For buying coins outside the account, a CSA-registered exchange is the right start. My picks, in order, are Coinbase, Kraken, Wealthsimple Crypto, Newton and NDAX. See how to buy Bitcoin in Canada. For the ETF list I track, see Bitcoin ETFs in Canada.
What Does A Bitcoin ETF Cost Inside An RRSP?
| Fund | MER | Approximate Yearly Cost |
|---|---|---|
| iShares Bitcoin ETF (IBIT) | 0.33% | $33 |
| Fidelity Advantage Bitcoin ETF (FBTC) | 0.35% | $35 |
| CI Galaxy Bitcoin ETF (BTCX.B) | 0.71% | $71 |
| Purpose Bitcoin ETF (BTCC) | 1.29% | $129 |
The dates are the same as in the table above. The fee comes out of the fund's value, so you do not see an invoice. Compare it with the cost of buying the coins directly outside the RRSP: NDAX charges a flat 0.20% per trade and nothing a year to hold. The ETF's yearly fee is the price of getting the exposure into a registered account.
What Does The CRA Say About TFSA Gains Compared With An RRSP?
The CRA's TFSA guide says gains inside a TFSA are generally tax-free and that qualified investments include securities listed on a designated stock exchange. An RRSP defers tax instead: you deduct contributions and pay tax on withdrawals. For an asset as volatile as Bitcoin, many readers prefer a TFSA, because a gain is never taxed, while a loss inside an RRSP is not claimable. That is a general comparison, not advice for your situation. The same eligibility question applies in both accounts: confirm the fund's status with your broker.
Who Says Bitcoin Is Not A Qualified Investment?
I have not found a CRA page that lists Bitcoin among qualified investments. Toronto tax law firm TaxPage.com says holding cryptocurrency directly in an RRSP is not permitted and that penalty taxes apply to non-qualified investments, and I would treat that as the safe working assumption. I am not stating a penalty percentage because I could not confirm it on a canada.ca page. Before you buy any crypto product in a registered account, ask the broker to confirm qualified investment status in writing.
Should I Use An ETF Or Buy Coins Outside The RRSP?
| Factor | ETF In An RRSP | Coins On An Exchange Or Wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Self-directed RRSP | Non-registered; coins cannot be moved into the RRSP |
| Tax Treatment | Deferred until withdrawal, per RRSP rules | Capital gain or business income per the CRA, reported on your return |
| Yearly Cost | Fund MER, from 0.33% to 1.29% in my table | None for holding; fee at each trade |
| Control | Units only; no wallet | Full control if you self-custody |
| Best For | People who want exposure in a registered account | People who want the coin, to use or to send |
Neither is better in every case. If the registered account is your priority, use the ETF. If you want to spend, send or self-custody, buy coins at a registered exchange and keep records for tax.
Do Staking ETFs Make Sense In A Registered Account?
Possibly, but check the facts per fund. CI Galaxy's Ethereum ETF reports a net staking yield of 0.84% as of September 30, 2026, and at least 75% of staking rewards accrue to the ETF. A small yield after fees may or may not justify a staking fund over a plain one. Confirm registered-account eligibility on the fund page before you buy.
What Changed For Crypto In Registered Accounts In October 2026?
- The federal government cancelled the proposed capital gains inclusion rate increase.
- Spot Solana ETFs with staking began trading on the TSX; eligibility for registered accounts should be confirmed per fund.
- iShares Bitcoin ETF began trading on Cboe Canada.
- Fidelity cut the management fee on its Bitcoin ETF to 0.32% from 0.39%.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Hold Bitcoin In An RRSP?
Not coins themselves. A Canadian-listed Bitcoin ETF can be held in a self-directed RRSP, and Evolve says its EBIT fund is eligible. Confirm with your broker.
Can I Transfer My Exchange Bitcoin Into An RRSP?
No. Coins held on an exchange or in a wallet cannot be contributed in kind. You would need to sell the coins and use cash.
Is A US Bitcoin ETF Allowed In A Canadian RRSP?
It depends on the listing and your broker, and I did not verify it. A Canadian-listed fund is the safer choice.
What Happens If I Hold A Non-Qualified Investment In An RRSP?
A penalty tax can apply. Check eligibility before you buy rather than trying to correct it afterward.
Which Bitcoin ETF Has The Lowest Fee In Canada?
Fidelity's FBTC (0.32% management fee, 0.35% MER as of March 31, 2026) and iShares' IBIT on Cboe Canada (0.32%, 0.33% as of September 30, 2026) are the lowest I verified.
How Is Bitcoin Taxed Outside An RRSP?
The CRA treats crypto activity as business income or a capital gain, depending on your activity. Selling, trading or spending triggers tax.
