BTCX.B is the ticker for the CI Galaxy Bitcoin ETF, a bitcoin fund you buy through any Canadian brokerage. It charges a 0.40% management fee and a 0.71% MER (as of June 30, 2026), and the fund invests in bitcoin. The .B unit is priced in Canadian dollars without currency hedging. It is one of the pricier Canadian bitcoin ETFs on fees alone.

I am not scoring BTCX.B. I do not rank ETFs the way I rank exchanges, and this page is a data page, not a recommendation.
What Is BTCX?
BTCX is the family name. CI Global Asset Management runs the fund with Galaxy Digital as portfolio manager, and each currency or hedging choice gets its own suffix. People search "BTCX.B stock", but it is an exchange-traded fund, not a company share. CI's page shows that each unit represents about 0.000146 bitcoin as of September 30, 2026, which is a handy way to see what a unit tracks without quoting a price that will be stale tomorrow.
How Does BTCX.B Compare With Other Canadian Bitcoin ETFs?
| ETF | Ticker | Management Fee | MER | Inception |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fidelity Advantage Bitcoin ETF | FBTC | 0.32% | 0.35% (Mar 31, 2026) | Nov 30, 2021 |
| iShares Bitcoin ETF | IBIT (Cboe Canada) | 0.32% | 0.33% (Sep 30, 2026) | Jan 8, 2025 |
| CI Galaxy Bitcoin ETF | BTCX.B | 0.40% | 0.71% (Jun 30, 2026) | Mar 9, 2021 |
| Evolve Bitcoin ETF | EBIT | 0.75% plus sales tax | Not retrieved | Feb 17, 2021 |
| Purpose Bitcoin ETF | BTCC, BTCC.B | 1.00% | 1.29% (Jun 30, 2026) | Feb 23, 2021 |
| 3iQ Bitcoin ETF | BTCQ | 1.00% | 1.47% (Jun 30, 2025) | Mar 31, 2021 |
The difference compounds. On a C$10,000 position, a 0.71% MER costs about C$71 a year and a 0.35% MER about C$35, before any tracking difference. Fidelity's FBTC is explained in my FBTC page. For the wider list, including ether funds, see best bitcoin ETFs in Canada and crypto ETFs in Canada.
Where Can You Buy BTCX.B In Canada?
Any self-directed brokerage account that trades Canadian-listed funds can buy it. Wealthsimple charges no commission on stock and ETF trades in non-registered, TFSA and RRSP accounts, according to its pricing page. Search the ticker, check which unit you are looking at (.B, USD or hedged), and place a limit order. You do not need a crypto exchange account for an ETF.
Can I Hold Bitcoin In My TFSA?
Direct coins on an exchange are a different thing from a fund. Some Canadian bitcoin ETFs are stated to be eligible for TFSAs and RRSPs, for example Evolve's EBIT and Fidelity's FBTC. CI's page for BTCX.B did not state eligibility in the version I retrieved, so check with your broker. The full rundown is on my TFSA crypto page.
Is BTCX.B Better Than Buying Bitcoin Directly?
It depends on what you want. A fund is simple, sits inside accounts you already have and avoids wallet management. It costs an annual MER, and you cannot send the bitcoin anywhere. Buying coins on Coinbase, Kraken or Wealthsimple Crypto gives you coins you can move to a hardware wallet. Tax rules also differ, so read crypto taxation in Canada.
How Is A Bitcoin ETF Structured?
An exchange-traded fund is a pool of assets divided into units that trade on a stock exchange. A spot bitcoin ETF holds bitcoin, with a custodian keeping the keys, and the fund's price tracks the value of that bitcoin minus costs. CI Galaxy Bitcoin ETF is managed by CI Global Asset Management with Galaxy Digital Capital Management LP as portfolio manager, which CI's page names as the manager, with Steve Kurz and Paul Cappelli as the named managers. CI's page says that as of September 30, 2026 it held about 6,863.34 units per BTC, or 0.000146 BTC per unit, and about C$947.45 million in total net assets on October 1, 2026.
Those numbers mean something. If you divide 1 by 6,863.34 you get the bitcoin each unit represents, and you can multiply by bitcoin's price to get a rough value without waiting for a quote. They also show the fund is big enough to trade easily.
What Does The MER Mean In Dollars?
| ETF | MER | On C$5,000 | On C$25,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| iShares Bitcoin ETF (IBIT) | 0.33% | C$16.50 | C$82.50 |
| Fidelity FBTC | 0.35% | C$17.50 | C$87.50 |
| CI Galaxy BTCX.B | 0.71% | C$35.50 | C$177.50 |
| Purpose BTCC | 1.29% | C$64.50 | C$322.50 |
| 3iQ BTCQ | 1.47% | C$73.50 | C$367.50 |
These are my calculations from the issuers' published MERs, before trading commissions and any tracking difference. The MER is already included in the fund's price, so you never see a bill. That is why it is easy to ignore, and why it matters over a decade.
Why Do The .B Suffix And The Other Units Exist?
CI offers the fund in several currency setups. CI's page lists CAD unhedged, USD and CAD hedged options. A hedged unit tries to remove the effect of USD-CAD moves, and an unhedged one lets that effect through. Because bitcoin trades globally in US dollars, a Canadian holder of an unhedged unit benefits when the Canadian dollar weakens and loses when it strengthens. Pick on purpose, and make sure your trade ticket shows the unit you intend.
What Are The Risks Of Holding BTCX.B?
- Price risk. CI's page gives the fund a High risk rating.
- Fee drag. A 0.71% MER costs more than two of its direct competitors.
- No coin access. You cannot withdraw bitcoin. If you want to use or spend coins, buy them directly.
- Custody and counterparty reliance. You depend on the manager and the custodian. Read the ETF Facts and prospectus for the custodian's name, which I did not retrieve from CI's page.
- Currency risk. It depends on which unit you hold.
Should You Buy The ETF Or The Coin?
| Question | BTCX.B | Coins On A Registered Exchange |
|---|---|---|
| Annual cost | 0.71% MER | No MER; you pay trading fees and spreads |
| Can you withdraw to a wallet? | No | Yes |
| Where do you buy? | Any brokerage that trades Canadian-listed funds | Coinbase, Kraken, Wealthsimple Crypto |
| Tax records | Your brokerage issues slips for taxable accounts | You track every transaction yourself |
| Registered accounts | Check the ETF Facts and your broker | Not in a TFSA that I could verify |
If simplicity wins, an ETF is fine. If cost wins, FBTC or the iShares fund beats BTCX.B on the published MER. If control wins, buy coins and use a wallet. See crypto ETFs in Canada for ether funds as well.
What Should You Read Before You Buy?
Every Canadian ETF publishes an ETF Facts document, a short, standardised summary of costs, risks and past returns, and a longer prospectus. For BTCX.B, read the ETF Facts for the exact custodian, the fee table, the risk rating and any statement about registered-plan eligibility, since CI's fund page did not state it in the version I retrieved. Print or save the PDF that you read, and keep your trade confirmation. If the document and my page ever disagree, the document wins.
How Does BTCX.B Fit In A Wider Plan?
I treat an ETF as the simple end of a spectrum. At one end is a brokerage ETF with no wallet to manage. At the other is a hardware wallet with coins you control. Many Canadians hold some of each. If you want to own coins directly, my guide to buying cryptocurrency in Canada shows the process, and the beginner guide shows how the pieces fit.

- : CI's BTCX.B MER stood at 0.71%.
- : Fidelity cut FBTC's management fee from 0.39% to 0.32%, and the iShares Bitcoin ETF began trading in Canada.
