Can You Hold Bitcoin And Crypto ETFs In A TFSA?

Last updated October 2, 2026

Fact-checked by Canadian crypto tradersHow we testWe may earn a commission

You generally cannot hold actual crypto coins in a TFSA, but you can hold Canadian bitcoin ETFs. The CRA describes TFSA investments as qualified investments such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds and ETFs. Fidelity says its FBTC bitcoin ETF is available for TFSA and RRSP accounts, and Evolve says the same for EBIT. Coins on an exchange or in a wallet are a different thing.

I am not an accountant, and this is general information, not tax advice. Verify any specific fund with your brokerage and, for anything unusual, with the CRA.

Can I Hold Crypto In A TFSA?

The CRA's TFSA page says that inside the account you may buy and sell qualified investments "such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs)." Coins you buy on Coinbase, Kraken or a wallet are not on that list in any way I could verify. I also could not find an official source showing a CSA-registered exchange that holds actual coins inside a TFSA, so I will not tell you one does.

What Is Not Allowed In A TFSA?

Anything outside the qualified list. The CRA page I checked did not describe the penalties for non-qualified holdings, so I will not quote a number. Take that gap seriously: ask the CRA or an accountant before you do anything creative. Also remember that contributions beyond your room are taxed, and the CRA warns frequent traders about deregistration.

What Is The Best Bitcoin ETF For Canadians?

For a TFSA, the practical question is which ETF is eligible and cheap. Published fees as of this month:

Bitcoin ETFs With Stated TFSA Eligibility, Fees
ETFTickerManagement FeeMER
Fidelity Advantage Bitcoin ETFFBTC0.32%0.35% (Mar 31, 2026)
Evolve Bitcoin ETFEBIT0.75% plus sales taxNot retrieved

Details for each: FBTC and BTCX.B. The full list is in best bitcoin ETFs in Canada.

How Do You Buy A Bitcoin ETF In A TFSA?

  1. Open a self-directed TFSA. Wealthsimple charges $0 commission on stock and ETF trades in TFSA, RRSP and non-registered accounts, per its pricing page.
  2. Search the ETF ticker. For example FBTC.
  3. Check your contribution room. Your CRA My Account shows it.
  4. Place a limit order.

What If I Want Actual Bitcoin?

Buy it in a non-registered account on a CSA-registered platform, keep records and report gains, as covered in crypto taxation in Canada. My top picks are Coinbase, Kraken and Wealthsimple Crypto.

What Is A TFSA, And Why Does The Rule Matter?

A Tax-Free Savings Account is a registered account where investment growth and withdrawals are not taxed, within your contribution room. Because the tax benefit is large, the CRA limits what the account may hold to qualified investments. The CRA page says you may buy and sell qualified investments such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds and exchange-traded funds. A bitcoin ETF is an exchange-traded fund, which is why issuers like Fidelity and Evolve can state TFSA eligibility. The coin itself is not a fund unit, and it is not a share, which is why holding it directly inside the account is a different question. If you are unsure about a particular asset, ask the CRA before you act.

What Does Each Choice Cost You In Fees?

In a TFSA, you will not pay tax on gains, but fees still apply. FBTC's MER is 0.35% and EBIT charges a 0.75% management fee plus sales tax. On a C$7,000 holding, a 0.35% MER is C$24.50 a year, while 0.75% before tax is C$52.50. Wealthsimple lists $0 commission on stock and ETF trading in non-registered, TFSA and RRSP accounts, so the ongoing MER is the main cost. Foreign-currency trades can add a conversion fee: Wealthsimple's pricing page states a 1.5% FX fee on US-listed securities without a USD account, so favour CAD-listed units such as FBTC.

What Mistakes Do People Make With Crypto And A TFSA?

  • Assuming an exchange account is a TFSA. Opening a crypto account with a TFSA-sounding brand does not make the coins TFSA holdings.
  • Over-contributing. The CRA's page says that if you contribute without available room, you will be taxed. Check My Account first.
  • Treating a TFSA as a trading account. The CRA notes that frequent traders may face deregistration issues. Active crypto trading belongs outside the account unless an accountant says otherwise.
  • Buying the wrong unit. Check the ticker and currency on the order ticket.
  • Forgetting records outside the TFSA. Coins you buy elsewhere still need transaction records. See crypto taxation in Canada.

How Should You Split Money Between A TFSA ETF And Real Coins?

There is no universal answer, and I will not invent one. Here is how I frame the decision. If you want the tax shelter, you are choosing an ETF. If you want to move, spend or self-custody the coins, you are buying on an exchange and accepting normal tax rules. If you are new, start small in whichever you understand, and read my beginner guide before you commit a large sum. For exchange picks, see Coinbase, Kraken and Wealthsimple Crypto, ranked in my exchange ranking.

Which Questions Should You Ask Before Buying A Crypto ETF In A TFSA?

  1. Is the fund listed on a Canadian exchange? Fidelity's FBTC is listed on the TSX and Evolve's EBIT is a Canadian ETF.
  2. What does the issuer say about registered plans? Fidelity states TFSA and RRSP availability. Evolve states TFSA and RRSP eligibility. CI's page did not state it in the version I read.
  3. What is the full cost? Compare MERs: 0.35% for FBTC, 0.33% for the iShares Bitcoin ETF, 0.71% for BTCX.B.
  4. Which currency unit am I buying? A USD unit in a CAD-based TFSA adds a conversion step.
  5. Does my contribution room cover it? The CRA warns that over-contributing is taxed.

Does A Crypto ETF Make Sense In A TFSA At All?

For some people, yes. Gains inside a TFSA are not taxed, and bitcoin's price swings are large enough that the tax shelter can be worth a lot if the fund performs well. The downside is symmetrical: a loss inside a TFSA cannot be claimed against other gains, which is a real cost in a volatile asset. Contribution room is also limited and re-used only after withdrawals, so a TFSA holding that loses money has used room that would otherwise have been available. That is a trade-off to weigh, not a recommendation either way.

What About An RRSP Or A First Home Savings Account?

Fidelity and Evolve both state RRSP availability for their bitcoin ETFs. For other registered accounts, I did not find an issuer or CRA statement that I could cite, so I will not guess. Ask your brokerage whether a specific fund can be held in the account you are looking at, and ask for the answer in writing if the amount is large. A short call to the CRA is free and gives you an official answer.

Where Do Coins Fit If You Keep A TFSA For ETFs?

Most readers who want both end up with a split: an ETF for the tax-sheltered part and coins on a registered exchange or in a wallet for the part they want to use. If you do that, keep a transaction log for the coin side, because the CRA treats crypto like a commodity and each sale, swap or purchase of goods is a taxable event. My guide to reporting your crypto taxes shows what to record.

What Changed For Crypto Accounts In Canada Lately?

  • : FBTC's MER was reported at 0.35% on Fidelity's page.
  • : Fidelity cut FBTC's management fee to 0.32%.
  • : Robinhood closed its WonderFi acquisition, affecting Bitbuy and Coinsquare customers.
