Our top pick for Canadians: CoinbaseSign Up

To buy Bitcoin in Canada, open an account with a CSA-registered exchange, verify your ID, fund it with a free Interac e-Transfer, and place a buy order for BTC. The whole thing takes about 15 minutes once your ID clears. I recommend starting with Coinbase if you want the simplest app, or NDAX if the fee matters most.

I get this question more than any other, so here is the version I would give a friend. No jargon, no trading screens, and real fee numbers instead of marketing.

Part of my guide to how to buy crypto in Canada.

Where Do You Buy Bitcoin In Canada?

Use a platform that appears on the CSA's authorized list. That is the one filter that screens out the worst outcomes. The table lists every exchange on my ranking that carries Bitcoin, with its verified status and fee.

Coinbase and Crypto.com publish one global coin list, not a Canadian one. Check the coin in their Canadian app before you fund an account.

How Do Beginners Buy Bitcoin Step By Step?

  1. Create the account. Sign up at Coinbase (or another exchange from the table) with your email and a strong password, and turn on two-factor authentication immediately.
  2. Verify your identity. Canadian rules require every registered platform to confirm who you are, so have your government photo ID ready. Approval can take minutes or a day.
  3. Add Canadian dollars. Choose Interac e-Transfer. Coinbase, Kraken, Newton, NDAX and Wealthsimple Crypto all list it with no fee from their side, though your own bank may charge you for sending. Kraken's Interac minimum is $5.
  4. Place the buy. Choose BTC, enter a dollar amount, and read the preview. The preview shows the fee and the spread. If the total looks high, a limit order or a different exchange may cost less.
  5. Decide where the coins live. Leave a small amount on the exchange to trade. For long-term holdings, withdraw to a hardware wallet, and send a small test amount first. Bitcoin withdrawals cost a network fee.

How Much Does A $500 Bitcoin Purchase Cost?

The fee schedules differ more than most people expect. This table applies each platform's published rate to a $500 buy. Spreads move with the market, so treat any spread figure as a guide, not a promise.

Cost Of A $500 Bitcoin Buy On Registered Platforms
PlatformPublished CostOn $500
NDAXFlat 0.20% on every buy$1.00
Kraken Pro0.40% maker, 0.80% taker at the base tier$2.00 maker, $4.00 taker
NewtonSpread of 1.00% to 1.15% on BTC$5.00 to $5.75
Wealthsimple Crypto0.5% fee plus a spread on market orders; a $1 surcharge applies under $100$2.50 plus the spread
CoinbaseUp to 1.875% fee on simple buys, varying by payment method, plus spreadUp to about $9.38 plus spread
Bull BitcoinNo fee; a spread of about 2% each side, derived from the live quoteAbout $10
Bitcoin Well1.5% spread online for verified accounts$7.50

The lowest number is not always the best deal. NDAX is cheap on cost, but "easy" matters too, and that is why Coinbase ranks first overall in my scoring. Survey respondents told me safety comes first (41%), then fees (21%), and my scores weight them that way. See the survey results.

How Much Bitcoin Can I Buy With $1,000 Canadian?

The amount depends on the price when you click buy, which I will not quote here. Take $1,000, subtract the fee from the table above, and divide by the live price shown in your app. On NDAX the fee on $1,000 is $2.00, so $998 goes into Bitcoin. Some platforms cap what you can buy: Coinbase applies a CAD 30,000 12-month limit on assets other than BTC, ETH, SOL, USDC, BCH and LTC in Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and the territories, and BTC itself is exempt.

Can You Cash Out Bitcoin For Real Money In Canada?

Yes, and it is the same process in reverse. Sell the Bitcoin on the exchange, then withdraw Canadian dollars by Interac e-Transfer or EFT. Coinbase supports Interac e-Transfer and EFT cash-out, though it does not publish a withdrawal fee, and Shakepay supports Interac in and out. My sell Bitcoin guide and cash out guide cover the details. A sale is a taxable disposal, so note the date and amount.

Is It Too Late To Invest In Bitcoin?

I will not predict prices, and nobody honest can. What I can tell you is how to avoid the mistakes that cost Canadians money: buying through an unregistered platform, paying a 10% fee at a Bitcoin ATM, and putting in money you will need next year. Start small, learn the app, and add on a schedule if you like. For how ATMs compare, see how to use a Bitcoin ATM in Canada.

How Do You Store Bitcoin After You Buy It?

An exchange holds your coins for you. A wallet lets you hold the keys yourself. The CRA lets you move coins between your own wallets without tax, so there is no tax reason to leave them on an exchange. Browse my wallet picks before you buy a device, and buy it only from the maker or an official reseller.

What Changed For Buying Bitcoin In Canada In October 2026?

  • BitMEX shut down its exchange, so only withdrawals remain.
  • Coinbase launched derivatives in Canada for eligible clients only, not retail investors.
  • Robinhood launched crypto trading in Canada with 50+ coins.
  • Robinhood completed its WonderFi acquisition; Coinsquare and Bitbuy customers are moving to the Robinhood app.
  • Newton became a CIRO investment dealer member.

How Much Bitcoin Can I Buy With $1,000 Canadian?

Subtract the platform fee from $1,000 and divide by the live price in the app. On NDAX the 0.20% fee on $1,000 is $2.00, so $998 is invested. Spreads on other platforms change the result.

Some platforms accept cards, but fees are higher. Kraken lists a debit card fee of 0.25 CAD plus 3.75%, which is far above an Interac e-Transfer. I use bank transfers instead.
