CAD Stablecoins In Canada: QCAD, CADC And CADD Compared

Canada has three Canadian-dollar stablecoins worth knowing: QCAD, CADC and CADD. QCAD, issued by Toronto-based Stablecorp, got a final prospectus receipt from Canadian regulators in November 2025. CADD launched in May 2026 from Tetra Digital Group with approval from Alberta. CADC dates from 2021. All three say they are backed 1:1 by Canadian dollars. I do not score them.

  • QCAD: Stablecorp, final prospectus receipt Nov 24, 2025, monthly reserve attestations
  • CADD: Tetra Digital Group, launched May 2026, bank and fintech consortium
  • CADC: Paytrie, launched 2021, now owned by Loon
  • Where to buy QCAD: listed on Kraken

A US dollar stablecoin like USDC is the one most Canadians know. A Canadian dollar stablecoin avoids the currency swing: one token is meant to equal one Canadian dollar. This page compares the three, shows what each says about its reserves and chains, and flags what I could not verify. It is a reference, not an endorsement.

What Is A Canadian Stablecoin?

It is a token that aims to hold a value of one Canadian dollar, backed by real dollars in reserve. The Canadian regulatory picture matters more here than anywhere else. CSA Staff Notice 21-333 lets registered platforms offer a stablecoin only if its issuer meets reserve, custody and disclosure terms, and the cutoff for non-compliant ones was December 31, 2024. Circle committed to the terms on December 4, 2024, so USDC is the one US dollar stablecoin registered platforms still offer. USDT, DAI and RAI are barred. For the US dollar side, see how to buy stablecoins in Canada.

What Is QCAD?

QCAD is a Canadian dollar stablecoin issued by Stablecorp. Stablecorp's release says the QCAD Digital Trust got its final prospectus receipt from the Canadian Securities Administrators on November 24, 2025, and calls it Canada's first compliant CAD stablecoin. It says reserves are held 1:1 at regulated financial institutions with regular public attestations, and Finder Canada reports monthly third-party attestations. I wrote about the launch in my QCAD news article. Kraken's public asset list includes QCAD, but confirm it in your Canadian app before you fund an account. Kraken is CSA-registered, with free Interac e-Transfer deposits.

What Is CADD?

CADD launched in May 2026 from Tetra Digital Group. Finder Canada says a consortium that includes the National Bank of Canada, Shopify and Wealthsimple backs it, and that it was granted approval from the Alberta Treasury Board and Finance. It runs on Ethereum, Base and Tempo. I have not verified where Canadians can buy it, so I will not point you to a platform.

What Is CADC?

CADC was launched by Paytrie in 2021 and is redeemable 1:1 for Canadian dollars. Finder Canada says Paytrie was recently acquired by Calgary-based Loon, and that CADC runs on Ethereum, Base, Polygon and Arbitrum. I have not verified its regulatory status.

Is A CAD Stablecoin Safe?

Safer than an unbacked coin, not as safe as a bank deposit. A stablecoin is only as good as its reserves and its redemption process, and it is not covered by CIPF or CDIC. Look for three things: who holds the reserves, how often an independent party attests to them, and whether you can redeem for Canadian dollars at par. The federal government has also said it remains committed to the Stablecoin Act, which will matter for issuers. Do not use a stablecoin as a savings account. My scams guide covers yield promises that sound too good.

Why Use A CAD Stablecoin Instead Of USDC?

Pros

  • No USD to CAD conversion if you earn and spend in Canadian dollars
  • A regulated structure for QCAD, per its prospectus receipt
  • Useful for on-chain payments in Canadian dollars

Cons

  • Limited places to buy and sell compared with USDC
  • Smaller markets, so spreads can be wider
  • Issuer and reserve risk, which differs by coin

For everyday buying and selling of crypto in Canadian dollars, an exchange with free Interac funding is simpler: Coinbase, Wealthsimple Crypto, Newton and NDAX. See best crypto exchanges in Canada.

What Do Reserves And Attestations Actually Tell You?

A reserve statement tells you what the issuer says it holds. An attestation is an outside accounting firm's report that the reserves matched the token supply on a given date. It is weaker than a full audit, and it covers a point in time. Stablecorp's release says QCAD's reserves are subject to regular audits and public attestations, and Finder Canada says the attestations are monthly. For CADC and CADD I did not find a comparable statement in my sources, so I cannot say how often they are checked. When you evaluate any stablecoin, find the latest report, check the date, and confirm the reserve is at a regulated institution, not at the issuer's own bank account.

What Are CAD Stablecoins Used For?

Finder Canada describes them as tools for domestic payments and cross-border transactions. For the average Canadian crypto buyer, the use is narrow. You might hold QCAD to move value between wallets without exposure to Bitcoin's price, or to pay a merchant or a service that accepts it. You would not use it as a savings account, because it pays no deposit insurance and the issuer, not a bank, stands behind it. For US dollar stablecoin use, USDC is the one still offered on registered platforms.

What Happens If A Stablecoin Loses Its Peg?

A stablecoin can trade below one dollar if people doubt the reserves or the redemption process. Price drops are usually fast. If you hold one, watch for three signals: a delayed attestation, a halt on redemptions, or a sudden change in reserve holdings. If you only hold it briefly to move money, the risk is small, and if you plan to hold, spread across issuers or convert back to dollars. My stablecoin buying guide shows the exchange routes.

How Does The CSA Treat Stablecoins On Registered Platforms?

CSA Staff Notice 21-333, dated October 5, 2023, lets a registered platform offer a stablecoin only if its issuer meets reserve, custody and disclosure terms, and the delisting cutoff for non-compliant ones was December 31, 2024. Circle committed on December 4, 2024, so USDC stayed. Coinbase removed USDT on August 31, 2023 and Crypto.com removed it on January 31, 2023. Our files note that CSA pages were unreachable when I checked, and the notice details rest on Circle's release and law-firm summaries. The practical point stands: for Canadian-dollar stablecoins, the QCAD prospectus receipt is a stronger regulatory signal than an issuer's own statement.

How Do I Send A Multi-Chain Stablecoin Safely?

QCAD and CADC each run on several blockchains, and a token sent on the wrong network can be lost. Before you send, confirm the network in the receiving app, match the address format, and send a small test first. Never paste an address from an email or message. If the platform does not support the network you are using, do not try to bridge it yourself.

If you only want a quick way to hold Canadian dollars on-chain, QCAD is the one with a regulatory milestone I can point to. If you want the widest choice of platforms, USDC remains the stablecoin registered Canadian exchanges still offer. Neither one replaces a bank account.

What Changed For Canadian Stablecoins In October 2026?

  • CADD launched from Tetra Digital Group with approval from Alberta Treasury Board and Finance.
  • Finance Canada said it remains committed to implementing the Stablecoin Act.
  • The QCAD Digital Trust received a final prospectus receipt from the CSA.
  • Circle committed to CSA stablecoin terms, so USDC stayed available on registered platforms.
