Bitcoiniacs is a Vancouver company that installed the world's first Bitcoin ATM on October 29, 2013, and it is registered with FINTRAC as a money services business. I do not score it, because I have not tested its machines and could not verify its current fees. If you need to sell or buy with cash, it is a long-running local option, but an online exchange will cost far less.
- History: the first ATM sat at Waves Coffee House on Howe Street in Vancouver
- Registration: FINTRAC M14386049, status Registered, expiry June 27, 2027
- Fees: not verified; read the screen before you confirm
Bitcoiniacs matters for a reason that has nothing to do with ranking. It is where Canada's Bitcoin ATM story started, and the machines that followed are the reason regulators now talk about banning the whole category. This page covers who the company is, what is verified about it today, and when an ATM makes sense at all.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|

| Locations | The company's website lists machines in Vancouver, Toronto, Burnaby and Richmond |
| Current Fees | Not verified. The only published figure I found is a 3% fee planned in 2013, which is history, not today's price |

What Is Bitcoiniacs?
Bitcoiniacs is a Bitcoin retailer that started in Vancouver and put Bitcoin machines in public places. Mitchell Demeter, a co-founder, brought the first ATM to Waves Coffee House, and news reports from the time said the machine handled 81 transactions worth about $10,000 on its first day. The company planned to recover the roughly $18,500 per machine by charging about 3% on each transaction. That was a 2013 plan. I do not use it to describe what a customer pays now.
Is Bitcoiniacs Registered In Canada?
Yes, with FINTRAC. The open registry lists Loyola Plans Canada Inc. under the operating name Bitcoiniacs, registered since 2014, with a registration that runs to June 27, 2027. FINTRAC registration means the company has to follow anti-money-laundering rules: verifying identity at $1,000 or more and reporting large cash receipts of $10,000 or more. It does not mean the same thing as authorization by the Canadian Securities Administrators, the status that Coinbase, Kraken and NDAX hold. Bitcoin Well and Bull Bitcoin sit in the same FINTRAC-only category on my list; see my Bitcoin Well review for how I treat that.
How Much Does Bitcoiniacs Charge?
I could not verify a current fee schedule, so I will not print a number. ATM operators usually build their fee into the price they quote you, and the gap between that price and the market price is your cost. The honest way to compare is to look at the on-screen quote before you insert cash, then calculate the difference against the live price at an exchange. In my own earlier test of a Localcoin machine I paid $2.75 on a $20 purchase, which was 13.7%. That is a single data point, not a rule, but it shows how fast a small buy turns expensive. My Bitcoin ATM guide walks through the full process.
Is A Bitcoin ATM A Good Way To Buy Bitcoin?
Pros
- Cash is accepted, so no bank account is needed
- A staffed brand with a long track record in Vancouver
- Quick for someone who needs to sell and walk away with cash
Cons
- Costs more than any online exchange I score
- The federal government has proposed banning crypto ATMs, so the machine network may shrink
- Scammers use ATMs, so never feed one on someone else's instructions
What Should I Use Instead Of A Bitcoin ATM?
For buying, compare these CSA-registered platforms with free Interac funding: Coinbase, Kraken, Wealthsimple Crypto, Newton and NDAX. NDAX's flat 0.20% is the lowest published rate on my list. For Bitcoin only, Bull Bitcoin sends coins to your own wallet and Bitcoin Well shows a 1.5% online spread. Full scores are on my best crypto exchanges in Canada page. To turn Bitcoin into cash, see how to sell Bitcoin in Canada.
What Should You Check Before Using Any Bitcoin ATM?
- The operator's legal name, searched in FINTRAC's registry.
- The exchange rate on screen against the live price, since the gap is your fee.
- The fee and minimum shown before you insert cash. Walk away if you cannot see them.
- Who gave you the wallet address. If a stranger did, stop.
- Whether you could do this online for far less. Almost always, you can.
Is The World's First Bitcoin ATM Still There?
Search results for the company say the original machine at 900 Howe Street, Vancouver is still listed on its site as a place to sell Bitcoin for Canadian dollars. I have not visited, so treat this as the company's own listing and check before you go.
Why Does The Original Waves Coffee ATM Matter?
Because it set the template. The machine on Howe Street was a Robocoin kiosk, and Bitcoiniacs brought it to Waves Coffee House with co-founder Mitchell Demeter pushing the project. Reports from the first week say the ATM handled about $100,000 of transactions and registered more than 500 unique users, with roughly 90% of them buying. That mix, mostly buyers paying cash, never really changed. It is also why regulators focus on ATMs now: cash-in machines make it easy for a person to buy crypto in minutes, whether the buyer is a hobbyist or a victim following instructions from a scammer. The 2013 machine cost about $18,500, which tells you why the fee had to be high to pay for it.
How Does Bitcoiniacs Compare With Registered Exchanges?
| Factor | Bitcoiniacs | CSA-Registered Exchange Apps |
|---|---|---|
| Regulator Status | FINTRAC-registered MSB; CSA status not checked | CSA authorized; several are also CIRO dealer members |
| How You Pay | Cash at a machine or in person (per company site) | Interac e-Transfer, free at Coinbase, Kraken, Newton, NDAX and Wealthsimple Crypto |
| Fee You Can Verify | None found | NDAX flat 0.20%; Kraken Pro 0.40% and 0.80%; Newton spread 1.00% to 1.15% on BTC |
| ID Rules | FINTRAC ID checks at $1,000 or more apply to MSBs | Full KYC at signup |
| Speed | Minutes at a machine | Minutes to a day, after account approval |
| Best For | Cash users who need an in-person option | Almost everyone else |
How Can I Buy Bitcoin With Cash Without An ATM?
There are two registered routes on my list that accept cash. Bull Bitcoin lets you pay in person at Canada Post: the fee is $3.95, with a minimum of $100 and a maximum of $7,500, and the payment is instant. Bitcoin Well sells through cash at its ATMs, with fees shown before you confirm, and through cash vouchers on a Lite Account at a 4.0% spread, with a buy limit up to $4,950 per day on its rates page (its buy page says $3,000 per day, so read both). Neither is cheap. Bull Bitcoin's online spread is about 2% each side, which is a derived figure, not a published rate. But both show their terms up front, which is more than I can say for a lot of kiosks.
What Should A First-Time Cash Buyer Do?
Start by deciding how much you are willing to lose to fees. If the answer is "almost nothing," skip the machine. If you need cash, buy a small amount first, read the on-screen total before you confirm, and send the coins to a wallet you own, not an address from a message. Then compare what you paid with an exchange quote for the same amount the next day. That one comparison teaches more than any review.
What Changed For Bitcoin ATMs In October 2026?
- Bitcoin Depot Inc. and 17 affiliates, including Bitcoin Depot Operating LLC, BitAccess Inc., Digital Gold Ventures Inc. and Express Vending Inc., filed voluntary Chapter 11 petitions in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas to wind down and sell assets, per its SEC 8-K.
- Finance Canada announced a plan to ban crypto ATMs; details of the legislation are still to come.
