Our top pick for Canadians: CoinbaseSign Up

To buy NEAR in Canada, use a CSA-registered exchange that lists it, verify your ID, deposit Canadian dollars by Interac e-Transfer where the platform allows it, and place the buy. Of the platforms on my list, Coinbase (9.8), Kraken (9.2) and Newton (7.9) list NEAR and are registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators.

BloFin, MEXC and Bitunix also list it, but they are offshore, so read the labels in the table first. Wealthsimple Crypto, Bull Bitcoin, Bitcoin Well and Shakepay are not shown because I could not verify a NEAR listing on them.

  1. Coinbase, 9.8: the largest, most familiar app with free Interac funding
  2. BloFin, 9.6: low spot fees, but it is offshore
  3. Kraken, 9.2: lower fees on Kraken Pro and a wide coin list
  4. Newton, 7.9: a simple CAD app with free Interac, wire and EFT deposits
  5. NDAX, 7.8: a flat 0.20% fee and free Interac deposits

Coinbase and Crypto.com publish one global coin list, not a Canadian one. Check the coin in their Canadian app before you fund an account.

I list only the platforms whose asset lists I could match to NEAR, in my fixed order. A listing on an asset list is not a promise that the coin is open to every Canadian province, so check the order screen before you deposit.

What Is NEAR, And Why Do Canadians Buy It?

Buying NEAR in Canada
Buying NEAR in Canada.

Ready to buy NEAR in Canada? Since I started trading crypto in Canada in 2016, I have tested 61 exchanges, and with my YouTube channel, OCryptoCanada, I have sorted out what works best for us. Whether you are new or a seasoned trader, this guide should steer you toward an informed choice.

NEAR (NEAR) is the foundation of a user-friendly blockchain designed for fast, scalable dApps and DeFi. Canadians are drawn to its low fees, whether they are in Toronto or on the Prairies.

It is one of the better-supported mid-size coins, which is why it shows up on most of the exchanges on my list.

NEAR describes itself as a platform where you build contracts in Rust, make web3 apps and sign transactions on any chain from a single NEAR account. The NEAR token prices computation and storage on the network, and transaction fees are charged in NEAR. NEAR is available at the protocol level, so it can transfer value between NEAR applications and accounts.

Staked NEAR represents the servers that maintain the network and process transactions.

How Does NEAR Work?

NEAR is secured by proof of stake, which the docs say uses economic incentives rather than energy-intensive computation. Validators produce and validate blocks and chunks, and validate and execute transactions. NEAR docs say the network scales through sharding.

Every NEAR transaction pays a small fee called gas. The docs say gas prevents spam and burns tokens. NEAR accounts can hold several access keys, each with its own permissions, such as FullAccess and FunctionCall keys.

Sources: docs.near.org, docs.near.org, docs.near.org, docs.near.org, docs.near.org.

The token's value rests on developers and users staying with the network, and newer chains are always competing for both. I am not quoting a live price here, since it would be out of date within hours. Check the order screen of your platform for the current CAD price.

How Much Does It Cost To Buy $500 Of NEAR In Canada?

What A $500 NEAR Buy Costs, Platform By Platform

Crypto.comAdvertised as low as 0.08% maker (about $0.40) and 0.18% taker (about $0.90); Canadian app schedule not published

Newton prices in a spread rather than a fee, so the figure above is the published spread band and not a line item. Offshore platforms show lower headline fees, but they cannot take Canadian dollars and Canada is restricted in their terms, so the saving comes with real risk. These are published base-tier figures. Your real cost also includes the spread, which most platforms do not publish for individual coins, so the order screen is the number that counts.

How Do I Buy NEAR In Canada Step By Step?

These steps use Coinbase, the highest-ranked CSA-registered platform in the table above that lists NEAR.

  1. Sign up and verify. Sign up with Coinbase Canada with your name, email, phone number and a government-issued ID. Coinbase asks for this to meet its KYC and anti-money-laundering rules. Verification can take up to 24 hours.
  2. Deposit Canadian dollars. Add Canadian dollars with an Interac e-Transfer or a bank EFT, both free to add cash. Card and PayPal are also offered, but they cost more.
  3. Buy NEAR. Search for NEAR in the asset list and open a simple buy. Coinbase's official Canada disclosure mentions up to 1.875% on a simple buy depending on payment method, and the preview shows your exact quote. Read the fee preview before you confirm.
  4. Check the order. Look at the quantity of NEAR you will receive for your CAD and compare the effective price with the market price. The gap is your real cost.
  5. Send long-term holdings to your own wallet. Try a small test transfer first. My best crypto wallets for Canadians list covers the options.

If your bank blocks a card payment for crypto, switch to Interac e-Transfer. It is usually the cheaper route anyway.

What Are The Documented Risks Of NEAR?

Beyond ordinary price swings, these are the risks the project or wallet vendors themselves put on record. The token's value rests on developers and users staying with the network, and newer chains are always competing for both.

  • Storage on NEAR is paid by locking tokens. Storage-staked tokens are unavailable for other uses, so part of a contract account's balance is not spendable.
  • The docs include a page on how NEAR tokens can be lost, covering key management problems and account deletion. Back up keys and read it.
  • Named accounts like alice.near and implicit accounts with a 64 character address are different, so confirm which one you are sending to.

Sources: docs.near.org, docs.near.org, docs.near.org.

Which Wallets Support NEAR?

I only list wallets whose own official pages say they support NEAR. Support can depend on the network and the device model, so check the vendor page before you buy a device.

  • Ledger states you can send, receive and stake NEAR in Ledger Live, and manage it with a Ledger hardware wallet.
  • Ledger Live lets you add a NEAR account from the Account section.
  • Ledger says NEAR can be staked from Ledger Live through the Ledger by Figment validator.
  • Ledger's NEAR page says private keys stay on the device and transactions are signed offline.

Sources: www.ledger.com, www.ledger.com.

What Should I Check Before Buying NEAR?

Small and mid-size coins fail in quieter ways than Bitcoin does. Before you press buy, run through a short list.

  • The exact ticker and network. Many tokens share a name or a ticker. Confirm you are buying the one you mean, and if you plan to withdraw, confirm which network the platform sends it on.
  • Liquidity. Look at the order book depth. A thin market means your own buy can move the price, and a sell later can be harder than the buy was.
  • The all-in price. Compare the quote on the order screen with the market price. The gap covers the spread and any fee.
  • Withdrawal rules. Some platforms limit or pause withdrawals of certain coins. Check before you assume you can move NEAR to your own wallet.
  • Your province. Platform access and limits can differ by province, so confirm yours on the platform's own page.

The token's value rests on developers and users staying with the network, and newer chains are always competing for both. None of this is a prediction about NEAR. I do not do price targets, and any page that gives you one is guessing.

Should I Use A Registered Or An Offshore Exchange?

Where a registered platform lists the coin, use it. The Canadian Securities Administrators register platforms that serve Canadians, and a registered platform sits under rules on custody, disclosure and complaints. You also get Canadian dollar deposits through Interac, which keeps the cost down.

BloFin, MEXC and Bitunix list NEAR too, but they are not registered with the CSA and their terms restrict Canadian residents. If an offshore platform freezes your account, there is no Canadian regulator to take it to. I keep offshore platforms in my ranking because I tested them and some readers will use them regardless, but I label them clearly for that reason.

How Do You Store NEAR?

For short-term trading, leaving NEAR on the platform you bought it on is fine as long as it has solid security. For long-term holding, transfer it to a wallet you control, because exchanges can get hacked and I have seen it happen. A hardware wallet like Ledger or a software wallet such as Trust Wallet (if it supports NEAR) keeps it safer. Store the seed phrase offline in a safe place, never on your phone.

I have covered the options in my best crypto wallets for Canadians guide. Before you move any coin, confirm the wallet supports the right network for it, and send a small test amount first.

How Do I Move NEAR From An Exchange To A Wallet?

The steps below come from the official pages listed underneath. The general routine is the same on every platform: copy your receiving address, pick the matching network, send a small test amount, and only then send the rest.

  • NEAR accounts are either named, like bob.near, or implicit, with a 64 character address tied to a key pair. Copy the exact receiving account.
  • Implicit accounts need no creation step but must be funded with NEAR to be usable.
  • Account IDs must be 2 to 64 characters of lowercase letters, digits and separators (period, hyphen, underscore).
  • An account can use 770 bytes with no storage staking, covered by a fixed 0.007 NEAR charge when the account is created.

How Do I Sell NEAR In Canada?

To sell, go back to the platform where you bought it. If your coins are in a wallet, send them back to the platform first, then use its sell option. You can swap NEAR for another cryptocurrency, or sell it for Canadian dollars if the platform offers that, and then withdraw to your bank account. Kraken charges CAD 10 for an Interac withdrawal. NDAX charges CAD 1.50 for an Interac withdrawal. Fees and limits differ by platform. My guide on how to sell or cash out crypto in Canada has the full steps.

If NEAR is only on an exchange that does not pay out in Canadian dollars, you will need to swap into a coin your registered platform accepts first, and that swap is itself a taxable event. Plan the exit before you plan the entry.

Do I Pay Tax When I Buy NEAR In Canada?

Buying NEAR with Canadian dollars is not itself a taxable event. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it can be. The CRA says that, depending on your activities, you may realize business income (or loss) or a capital gain (or loss), and the two are reported differently. Record the date and CAD value of every buy, sale and swap. See my crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes.

What Changed For Buying NEAR In Canada In October 2026?

  • Kraken republished its fee schedule, with Pro spot starting at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
  • Coinbase launched regulated crypto derivatives for eligible Canadian investors. It is not open to ordinary retail accounts.
  • One of Bitunix's FINTRAC registrations (Bitunix Innovation Limited) expired. Bitunix's own notice still names Canada as a restricted region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Buy NEAR In Canada?

Yes, on some platforms. Coinbase, BloFin, Kraken, Newton, NDAX, MEXC, Bitunix and Crypto.com list NEAR on their asset lists. Of those, Coinbase, Kraken, Newton, NDAX and Crypto.com are CSA-registered; the rest are offshore.

What Is The Best Way And Place To Buy NEAR In Canada?

Use a CSA-registered exchange and pay by Interac e-Transfer where you can. For NEAR, Coinbase is the highest-ranked registered platform on my list that lists it. Cards are quicker but cost more.

How To Trade NEAR In Canada?

You can trade NEAR for other cryptocurrencies on any platform that lists it. Find the trade or swap option and pick from the pairs available. Each swap can be a taxable event, so keep records.

What Is The NEAR Price In CAD?

The price moves constantly, so any number printed here would be stale. Check the live CAD price on the platform you plan to use, and compare it with the final quote on the order screen, which includes the platform's fee or spread.

Is NEAR A Good Investment For Canadians?

Any crypto investment is risky and you should do your own research. The token's value rests on developers and users staying with the network, and newer chains are always competing for both. Only put in money you can afford to lose, and do not treat any article, mine included, as a price forecast.

How Should I Store NEAR?

Short-term, leaving it on a platform with solid security is fine. Long-term, move it to a wallet you control, keep the seed phrase offline, and test with a small transfer first.
