The best crypto wallet in Canada depends on where your coins sit: a hardware wallet for long-term holdings, a software wallet for small everyday amounts, and a registered exchange account for trading. Wallets are legal in Canada, and you do not need permission to own one. For most readers I suggest buying on Coinbase or Kraken and moving long-term coins to a hardware wallet you control.
- Long-term holdings: a hardware wallet such as Trezor, Ledger or Tangem
- Small amounts you spend: a software wallet on your phone
- Trading: an exchange account at a CSA-registered platform
- Avoid: paper wallets and any wallet sold by an unofficial reseller
A wallet does one job: it holds the keys that prove your coins are yours. Everything else, from the app design to the coin list, is secondary. I have reviewed more than a dozen wallets for Canadians, and the same few questions come up in every review: who holds the keys, how do you recover them, and what happens if the company disappears.
| Type | Who Holds The Keys | Best For | Main Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware (cold) wallet | You | Long-term holdings | Losing the recovery seed, or buying a tampered device |
| Software (hot) wallet | You | Small amounts and everyday use | Malware on the phone or computer |
| Custodial exchange account | The platform | Trading, buying and selling in CAD | Platform failure; crypto is not covered by CIPF |
| Bitcoin-only non-custodial service | You | Bitcoin buyers who want coins in their own wallet | One coin only |
| Paper wallet | You | Almost nobody today | Easy to lose, damage or generate unsafely |
What Is The Safest Crypto Wallet In Canada?
For long-term holdings, a hardware wallet beats every other option I have tested because the keys never touch an internet-connected device. I have reviewed Trezor Safe 5, Trezor Model T, Ledger Flex, Ledger Stax, Tangem, Coldcard Q, Keystone 3 Pro, OneKey Pro and SafePal X1. The full ranking is on my best crypto wallets for Canadians page. Whatever you pick, buy it from the maker or an official reseller. My Trezor buying guide shows how that works for Canadian shipping and duty.
Which Wallet Can I Use In Canada?
Any of them. Canadian law does not restrict self-custody wallets, and there is no wallet licence. What the law controls is the business selling crypto to you. That is why I keep two lists: wallets, which are tools, and exchanges, which are regulated businesses. For exchanges, the CSA authorizes platforms and FINTRAC registers money services businesses. A wallet app that also sells you coins is acting as an exchange, so check its registration the same way.
Is Coinbase Or Wealthsimple Better?
Both are CSA-registered, but they are different products. Coinbase is a CSA Restricted Dealer with 200+ assets on its Canadian site, free Interac e-Transfer and EFT funding, and a fee of up to 1.875% on simple buys plus a spread. Wealthsimple Crypto is a CIRO dealer member with a flat 0.5% fee plus a spread on market orders, or 0.5% falling to 0% with 0% spread on Active Trader, and it lists 170+ coins. Wealthsimple wins on fee clarity and having everything in one app with your other accounts. Coinbase wins on coin range On my ranking Coinbase scores 9.9 and Wealthsimple 9.5.
How Much Does An Exchange Protect My Coins?
| Platform | Custody And Protection (Platform's Own Statements) |
|---|---|
| Coinbase | Custodial omnibus accounts; says it holds customer assets 1:1; Canadian fiat wallets not covered by CIPF or CDIC |
| Kraken | Publishes Proof of Reserves; the June 30, 2026 snapshot showed a BTC reserve ratio of 102.9% |
| Wealthsimple Crypto | Crypto held in trust; says its partners carry over $75M in cold storage coverage each; cash covered by CIPF, crypto not |
| Newton | Says over 80% of assets are offline; CIPF member for cash, crypto not protected |
| Shakepay | USD funds protected up to $1M by CIPF as an investment dealer; crypto not covered |
Notice what is missing: no platform's crypto is covered by CIPF. That gap is the reason I move long-term coins to my own wallet. For the tradeoffs, see my exchange ranking.
Can CRA Track Crypto Wallets?
The CRA does not publish a tracking method, so I will not claim one. It does say you must keep records that include wallet addresses, balances and cost, and that transfers between your own wallets are not taxable disposals. Exchanges send large cash receipts of $10,000 or more to FINTRAC. If you report every sale, trade and spend, you do not have to guess what anyone can see. See my tax guide.
Should I Use A Paper Wallet?
I do not recommend one. A paper wallet can be lost, burned or generated on a compromised computer, and recovering from it is awkward. A hardware wallet with a written recovery seed gives you the same offline storage with far fewer ways to fail. Searches for "paper wallet canada" are mostly people hoping for a cheap option. A used Trezor from an unofficial seller is not that option either.
How Do I Open A Crypto Wallet In Canada?
- Decide the job: long-term storage or everyday use.
- For storage, order a hardware wallet from the maker or an official reseller.
- Create the wallet on the device, write the recovery seed on paper, and keep two copies offline.
- Buy coins at a CSA-registered exchange such as Coinbase, Kraken or NDAX and send a small test amount first.
- Send the rest and keep a record of the date and CAD value for tax.
What Is A Seed Phrase And How Should I Back It Up?
A seed phrase is a list of words that can rebuild your wallet on any compatible device. Anyone who has it controls your coins, and if you lose it and the device, the coins are gone. Write it on paper or metal, never in a photo, a notes app or a cloud drive. Keep two copies in different places, such as a home safe and a deposit box. Never type it into a website or app that asks for it, and treat a message asking for your phrase as a scam, every time. A Trezor, Ledger or other hardware wallet shows the phrase on its own screen during setup, which is the safest moment to write it.
What Does It Cost To Withdraw To My Own Wallet?
| Platform | Bitcoin Withdrawal Fee |
|---|---|
| Coinbase | Network fee only, estimated at send time; Lightning sends carry a 0.2% processing fee |
| Kraken | 0.000015 BTC on the Bitcoin network; Lightning 0% plus 0.1% |
| Wealthsimple Crypto | Network fee only, estimate shown before sending |
| Newton | Free lane no fee; Standard lane network fee only; Fast lane CAD 10 plus network fee |
| NDAX | 0.00007 BTC standard, 0.00014 BTC express, 0 BTC on the FLEX lane (up to 12 hours) |
| Shakepay | Free at normal speed, about 12 hours; fast speed charges fees |
| Bull Bitcoin | No fee on-chain payout, minimum 0.001 BTC |
Fees move with network congestion and each platform updates its schedule, so confirm before you send. The point of the table is the pattern: moving coins to your own wallet is cheap compared with the trade itself, so there is rarely a good reason to leave long-term holdings on an exchange.
When Does A Software Wallet Make Sense?
For small amounts you actually use. A phone wallet is convenient for a payment or a trade, and I treat it like a physical wallet: carry what you can afford to lose. A phone can be lost or infected, so I keep long-term holdings on a hardware device. If you do use one, download it only from the official app store listing, check the developer name, and write the recovery phrase on paper. Never screenshot it.
What Changed For Crypto Wallets In Canada In October 2026?
- Trezor's resellers page lists Amazon Canada as its only official Canadian reseller.
- Coinbase launched derivatives in Canada for eligible clients only, not retail.
- Kraken's Proof of Reserves snapshot showed a BTC reserve ratio of 102.9%.
- Robinhood closed the WonderFi deal; Coinsquare customers are moving to Robinhood.
