Our top pick for Canadians: CoinbaseSign Up

The best crypto app in Canada is Coinbase, which I rank first with a score of 9.9 out of 10. Kraken is second among apps you can legally open as a Canadian, with 9.6, then Wealthsimple Crypto at 9.5. These rankings come from my testing of 61 exchanges and the weights from my reader survey of nearly 1,000 Canadians, where safety was the top priority.

For Bitcoin only, Bull Bitcoin (9.4) is built around sending coins to your own wallet. For a Canadian-regulated app with free Interac funding, Newton (9.3) is the one I would look at next.

BloFin, BTCC and MEXC keep their rank but I label them offshore: they are not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and BloFin's and MEXC's own terms list Canada as a restricted location. They are on this list because I have to rank what I tested, not because I tell Canadians to use them. Apple ratings are the Canadian App Store figures I retrieved on October 1, 2026.

What Is The Best Way To Buy Crypto In Canada?

Use a registered app, fund it with Interac e-Transfer and buy a major coin. Registered means the CSA authorized the platform, and in the apps below that is the case for all except the two Bitcoin-only ones, which are FINTRAC money services businesses. These are the apps I would put on a phone first, in my ranking order.

Is Kraken Better Than Wealthsimple?

For cost at any size, Kraken Pro wins: 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker at the entry tier, falling with volume, against Wealthsimple's 0.5% plus a spread that is not published as one number, unless you qualify for Active Trader status. For simplicity and a single home for stocks, cash and crypto, Wealthsimple wins. The coin gap is large too: Kraken lists about 490 assets for Canadians on my derived count against Wealthsimple's 170 plus the big three. Read my Kraken review and my Wealthsimple Crypto review.

Is Coinbase Or Wealthsimple Better?

My ranking says Coinbase, 9.9 to 9.5. Coinbase offers more coins, an easy app and a wider set of funding choices. Wealthsimple is a CIRO investment dealer, which brings CIPF coverage for cash but not for crypto, and its main edge is convenience if you already use it. Coinbase is a Restricted Dealer, and its Canadian fiat wallets are not covered by CIPF or CDIC.

What Is The Downside To Wealthsimple?

Three things. The spread on market orders is on top of the 0.5% fee, so the all-in cost is higher than the headline, and the CAD 1 surcharge applies under CAD 100. Crypto is not covered by CIPF. And the coin list, while large, is smaller than Kraken's or Coinbase's.

Can The CRA Track Crypto Wallets?

It can see what exchanges report, and that is about to expand. Canada's CARF implementation has Canadian crypto platforms collecting customer data from January 1, 2026, with first annual reports to the CRA in 2027 for 2026 activity. In 2021 the Federal Court also authorized the CRA to require Coinsquare to hand over records on its larger customers. A self-custody wallet does not report itself, but the moment coins move to or from a platform, that platform's records show the address on the other side.

Does Wealthsimple Report Crypto To The CRA?

Under CARF, Canadian platforms, Wealthsimple among them, are expected to collect and report the required customer information from the 2026 calendar year. I have not found an official Wealthsimple statement spelling out its own reporting, so check its tax documents page. Either way, you report your own gains: half of a capital gain is included in income under the CRA's current rules.

Which Crypto App Is Good In Canada?

Any app in the top six that fits your need: Coinbase for beginners, Kraken for lower fees, Wealthsimple for existing users, Bull Bitcoin for Bitcoin only, Newton for a Canadian dealer. My quiz will match you in a minute, and my best crypto exchanges in Canada page has the full cost comparison.

Which Crypto Is Best To Buy Now In Canada?

I do not tell you which coin to buy. I tell you where to buy it safely. If you are new, most people start with Bitcoin, and my guide to buying cryptocurrency in Canada shows each platform's costs.

How Did I Rank These Apps?

My scoring weights come from my reader survey. When I asked nearly 1,000 Canadians what mattered most in choosing an exchange, 41% said safety and security, 21% fees and spreads, 14% coin selection, 8% compliance with Canadian laws and 7% ease of use. Those shares became the weights in my scores, which is why the registered platforms sit near the top and why an app with a 4.9 rating can still rank below one with a 4.6: ratings measure how it feels, not whether Canadian regulators oversee it. You can read the full survey results and my testing of 61 exchanges behind the scores.

What Changed For Crypto Apps In Canada In October 2026?

  • Newton became a CIRO investment dealer.
  • Robinhood closed its WonderFi purchase, and Coinsquare and Bitbuy customers are being moved to the Robinhood app.
  • Coinbase launched crypto derivatives for eligible Canadian investors only, not retail clients.
  • Wealthsimple updated its crypto fee schedule, with Active Trader tiers down to 0%.
  • Kraken republished its fee schedule with Pro entry fees of 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
