What Do Shakepay And Robinhood Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?

OTC desk: USD deposits and large trades go through the OTC desk at launch, with a quoted spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.

What Happens To Your Money If Shakepay Or Robinhood Fails?
Shakepay:CIPF covers the cash and USD you hold at Shakepay, advertised as up to $1 million, but crypto is explicitly not covered. Customer crypto is held in trust with Coinbase Custody (at least 80% cold) and Fireblocks and BitGo hot wallets, and Shakepay's own risk statement warns that insurance may be inadequate and points users to withdraw to a private wallet. A hack, a custodian failure or a freeze can still hit crypto balances. BLOC adds liquidation risk if bitcoin falls, and Shakepay Credit operates under time-limited exemptive relief that runs three years from April 9, 2026, not full registration.
Robinhood: Robinhood Canada runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO investment dealer, so it is under dealer rules and CIRO supervision. CIPF covers CAD balances within limits but never crypto. Customer crypto stays in CCML's custody arrangement with crime insurance of an unpublished amount, and no proof of reserves was found. If the firm failed or was hacked, uninsured crypto would be an unsecured claim. The platform is in a migration, so features such as limit orders and swaps are still missing.
How Are Shakepay And Robinhood Treated For Tax In Canada?
Shakepay: Selling crypto, swapping it (including auto-swap), spending it with the card or repaying with it are dispositions; card cashback in bitcoin is income when received and your cost base starts at that value. Shakepay emails two CSVs (crypto and cash) but issues no tax slips, so you need Koinly or similar.
Robinhood: Buying with CAD is not a disposition. Selling for CAD is, and so is any later swap or spend. Robinhood gives statements and annual tax documents for past Bitbuy and Coinsquare activity; CSV and CRA-ready exports were not verified.
Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.
Which Should You Choose, Shakepay Or Robinhood?
Choose Shakepay If
You want the simplest Interac-funded way to buy Bitcoin or Ethereum from a CIRO-registered firm.
You want a bitcoin cashback card or a bitcoin-backed credit line in the same app.
You will keep the account active each month to reach Bright or Blue and lower the card and loan costs.
You do not need many coins, limit orders or Lightning.
Choose Robinhood If
You want one flat percentage fee and no Robinhood spread (0.50% to Oct 31, 2026, then 0.95%)
You are a former Bitbuy or Coinsquare customer moving to the new app
You are fine with market orders only for now
Is Shakepay Or Robinhood Better For Canadians In 2026?
It is closer than most pairs on this site. Both are CIRO investment dealers on the CSA list, neither is in my ranked top ten, and each does one thing well. Shakepay is a Montreal firm launched in 2015, dealing in Bitcoin, Ethereum and USDC with a prepaid card and a credit line. Robinhood Canada runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd. and offers 50+ coins in CAD pairs, with market orders only for now.
If you want mostly Bitcoin and Ethereum and a card, pick Shakepay. If you want a wider list of coins at one stated percentage, pick Robinhood, with the fee change in mind.
Shakepay charges no commission. Its cost is a spread targeted at 0.5% to 2.0% over a benchmark price, which can widen by up to 1.5% more, so $5 to $20 on $1,000 in normal conditions. Robinhood keeps no spread and charges a stated fee: $5 on $1,000 through October 31, 2026, $9.50 from November 1. Slippage within 1% on buys and 5% on sells passes through on top.
Through October, Robinhood's fee equals the cheapest end of Shakepay's band. From November, a flat 0.95% sits below Shakepay's midpoint of 1.25% but above its low end. What you pay on Shakepay depends on conditions, and what you pay on Robinhood depends on the date.
Which Is Easier To Fund And Cash Out?
Shakepay publishes its numbers: Interac in and out is free from $5 to $10,000, and a wire out is free from $10,000. Robinhood says Interac is free from its side and arrives in minutes, with a domestic wire in 1 to 3 business days, but its fees, minimums and maximums appear only inside the app, and it takes no credit or debit card. Former Bitbuy and Coinsquare users carry their KYC over; for new users I could not verify the process.
Which Is Safer For Canadians?
Both sit under CIRO rules, and in both cases CIPF covers cash, never crypto. Shakepay publishes its custody: at least 80% cold at Coinbase Custody (insured to US$320M), the rest hot via Fireblocks and BitGo, held in trust. Robinhood keeps the same custody arrangement as before the move, with BitGo used for staking, and claims crime insurance without publishing an amount. I found no proof of reserves for either.
Robinhood's platform is mid-migration, which is a risk of its own: limit orders and swaps are missing, its Canadian iOS rating is 2.90 across 97 ratings, and the FINTRAC row I saw showed an expiry of August 21, 2026 with the renewal unconfirmed. Shakepay's iOS rating is 4.62 across 24,349 ratings.
How Does Robinhood's November Fee Change Affect The Choice?
The step from 0.50% to 0.95% nearly doubles the fee, and it lands one month after launch pricing ends. If you buy once a month, the extra is about $4.50 per $1,000. If you buy often, it adds up, and Shakepay's variable spread may beat it in calm markets. Features matter too.

Who Should Choose Shakepay And Who Should Choose Robinhood?
Choose Shakepay if you want Interac funding in minutes, a bitcoin cashback card, a credit line or interest on cash, and you trade only the three assets.
Choose Robinhood if you are a former Bitbuy or Coinsquare customer, want one flat percentage, and can live with market orders. Compare both against my ranked list of exchanges before you commit.
