BTCC has a Canadian company on the FINTRAC list, which sounds like a licence. It is not a securities one. Newton is a CIRO investment dealer that your cash is covered with. Those two facts decide most of this comparison.

Newton Vs BTCC: Which Is Better For Canadians?

For most Canadians, Newton is the better choice (it wins on canadian status, my ranking, CAD funding). BTCC still comes out ahead on published trading fee, coins available. BTCC is best for offshore futures traders.

What Happens To Your Money If Newton Or BTCC Fails?

Newton: As a CIRO investment dealer member since March 2026, cash left in a Newton account is covered by CIPF, but Newton states crypto is not protected by CIPF, CDIC or any investor protection scheme. Over 80% of assets are kept offline and Newton says it carries crypto insurance, but it gives no amount and the custodian is not named on the current page, and no proof of reserves is published. An exchange hack or insolvency would leave you relying on that insurance and on the dealer's regulatory capital rules for the portion you cannot withdraw in time.

BTCC: BTCC Canada Limited is registered with FINTRAC, which is an anti-money-laundering registration, not a securities registration or investor protection. BTCC is not on the CSA list, is not a CIRO member and CIPF never covers crypto. If BTCC fails or freezes your account you have no regulator-backed claim. Its own guide notes some withdrawals face risk or compliance review, and public feedback mentions withdrawal and account-review complaints. High leverage futures can liquidate a position quickly.

How Are Newton And BTCC Treated For Tax In Canada?

Newton: Selling, swapping one coin for another and staking rewards are dispositions or income; buying and withdrawing to your own wallet are not. Newton exports your history as a Koinly-formatted CSV and links directly to Koinly; there is no CRA-ready report from Newton.

BTCC: Spot sales, crypto-to-crypto trades and futures settlement are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export or CRA-ready report was verified, so keep your own records of trades, fees and transfers.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, Newton Or BTCC?

Choose Newton If

  • You want a Canadian-only CIRO dealer with free Interac and EFT funding and a simple app.
  • You trade small amounts of the majors and prefer one visible price over order book mechanics.
  • You trade over CAD 1M a year and can reach Signature tiers that cut the fee below 1%.

Choose BTCC If

  • You live outside Ontario and Quebec and want offshore futures: BTCC is the one in this group with a Canadian FINTRAC-registered arm.
  • You want regulator protection or CAD funding: use a CSA-registered platform instead.

Is Newton Or BTCC Better For Canadians In 2026?

Newton, for nearly everyone. It sits at 7.9 on my list and BTCC at 7.0, and the gap is wider than the scores show. Newton is a CIRO investment dealer since March 18, 2026 with a CSA decision, and funding by Interac e-Transfer is free. BTCC is offshore, restricts Ontario and Quebec residents per its own guide, and has no verified CAD route.

BTCC's one standout is a Canadian entity with a current FINTRAC registration. Read the Newton review and BTCC review for the detail.

Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?

BTCC's spot fees at VIP0 are 0.2% maker and 0.3% taker, so CAD 2.00 to 3.00 on CAD 1,000. Futures are 0.03% maker and 0.055% taker. Newton's spread is 1.00% to 1.15% on BTC, ETH and USDC, or CAD 10.00 to 11.50 on the same amount, and up to 1.60% on other coins.

BTCC is cheaper per trade. What it lacks is a way for a Canadian to put CAD in, so the real cost starts with the purchase you make elsewhere. Newton's spread is the price of one-stop buying, with a price you see before you confirm.

Does BTCC's FINTRAC Registration Protect You?

No, not the way people hope. FINTRAC supervises anti-money-laundering compliance. It does not guarantee your balance or give you an investor-protection claim. BTCC is not on the CSA list, is not a CIRO member and is not covered by CIPF, which never covers crypto in any case.

BTCC's own guide notes that some withdrawals face risk or compliance review, and public feedback mentions withdrawal and account-review complaints. That is a mixed record, and I would read it before depositing anything.

Which Is Safer For Canadians?

Newton states crypto is not protected by CIPF, CDIC or any investor scheme, and it publishes no insurance amount or proof of reserves, but cash is covered by CIPF and it is under CIRO dealer rules. BTCC claims asset segregation and multi-signature cold wallets in its own words, and proof of reserves was not verified.

High-leverage futures, which BTCC advertises up to 500x on selected contracts, can liquidate a position quickly. A regulated dealer keeps you away from that, and for most people that is a feature.

Who Should Choose Newton And Who Should Choose BTCC?

Choose Newton if you want a regulated dealer, free CAD funding and a visible spread. Start at the Newton sign-up page. BTCC is for experienced futures traders outside Ontario and Quebec who accept no regulator-backed claim and no CAD route. I would not nudge anyone toward it. See the best crypto exchanges in Canada.

What Do Newton's Funding Rules Look Like?

Interac e-Transfer and pre-authorized debit are free in. Wires are free from CAD 10,000 and cost CAD 35 between CAD 5,000 and CAD 10,000. Out, Interac e-Transfer is free up to CAD 10,000 a transaction and EFT up to CAD 50,000, with CAD 50,000 a week combined. Wires go up to CAD 1,000,000.

BTCC's CAD route is simply not documented on a page I could verify. Crypto deposits and withdrawals are documented, with network selection and a security review step, and fees vary.

What Does BTCC's Product Range Add?

USDT-M and Coin-M perpetual futures, futures copy trading, a demo account, and a VIP program with fee discounts, priority support and higher withdrawal limits. Spot has 112 assets across 352 enabled markets including perpetual-only ones.

The apps rate 4.32 on the Canadian App Store from 1,010 ratings and 4.3 on Google Play from 18K global reviews. Newton's iOS app is 4.62 from 24,473 ratings. The gap is small. The regulatory gap is not.
