Bull Bitcoin: Derived from the live rates-page quote on 2026-10-03: buy US$86,676.96, sell US$83,273.82, mid about US$84,975, so about 2.0% each side. Not a published rate. Canada Post funding adds CAD 3.95. Robinhood: 0.50% per order through Oct 31, 2026, 0.95% from Nov 1, 2026 (CCML fee schedule effective 2026-10-01); Robinhood says it keeps no spread. Slippage within 1% on buys and 5% on sells passes to the client. Ranges reflect each platform’s published band, not a single quote. Bank and network fees are not included.
What Do Bull Bitcoin And Robinhood Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?
Bull Bitcoin Only
Bill payment with bitcoin (Bylls): Sell bitcoin to pay Canadian bill invoices. The CAD bill-payment payout is free from CAD 25 and takes 3 to 4 business days. Biller count and Bylls history: Not verified.
BULL Wallet: Open-source wallet with on-chain, Liquid and Lightning, Payjoin support. Lightning and Liquid-to-Bitcoin swaps run through Boltz, which suspended its service in August 2026, so those two functions fail until further notice. On-chain and Liquid send and receive still work. Bull Bitcoin says no funds are at risk.
Recurring buys and Autobuy: Scheduled DCA buys from your balance (hourly over Lightning and Liquid was announced). Autobuy turns every incoming fiat deposit into a buy and pays out to a default address or xpub you save.
Bull Bitcoin Prime: Advisory and OTC desk for individuals trading over $25,000, businesses and institutions: unlimited volumes, same-day wires, phone support. Discounted rates above $100,000 in volume.
Robinhood Only
Staking (announced): ETH and SOL staking from about CAD 1, listed as coming soon; CCML's schedule shows a staking fee of up to 30% of rewards on the former Coinsquare platform.
OTC desk: USD deposits and large trades go through the OTC desk at launch, with a quoted spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.
Coinsquare Trade: Request-for-quote product on the Coinsquare platform with a disclosed spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.
What Happens To Your Money If Bull Bitcoin Or Robinhood Fails?
Bull Bitcoin: Bull Bitcoin holds no bitcoin for you, so a failure of the company cannot freeze your coins once they are paid out, but any CAD sitting in your account balance is uninsured and is not a bank, trust or payment account. There is no CSA registration, no CIRO membership and no CIPF, so there is no investor-protection fund behind that balance. A mistaken address, a scam or an unauthorised login is the user's loss under the terms. Lightning and Liquid features inside BULL Wallet depend on a third party, Boltz, which is suspended, so they can be down without any loss of funds.
Robinhood: Robinhood Canada runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO investment dealer, so it is under dealer rules and CIRO supervision. CIPF covers CAD balances within limits but never crypto. Customer crypto stays in CCML's custody arrangement with crime insurance of an unpublished amount, and no proof of reserves was found. If the firm failed or was hacked, uninsured crypto would be an unsecured claim. The platform is in a migration, so features such as limit orders and swaps are still missing.
How Are Bull Bitcoin And Robinhood Treated For Tax In Canada?
Bull Bitcoin: Every sell, bill payment made with bitcoin and bitcoin-to-CAD conversion is a disposition for CRA purposes, and a buy sets your cost base. Export your history as CSV from My account, Transactions and load it into a tax tool such as Koinly; there is no CRA-ready report or slip.
Robinhood: Buying with CAD is not a disposition. Selling for CAD is, and so is any later swap or spend. Robinhood gives statements and annual tax documents for past Bitbuy and Coinsquare activity; CSV and CRA-ready exports were not verified.
Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.
Which Should You Choose, Bull Bitcoin Or Robinhood?
Choose Bull Bitcoin If
You want bitcoin delivered straight to your own wallet, with Interac, bill pay or wire funding at no fee.
You want to pay Canadian bills or credit cards with bitcoin.
You trade above $25,000 and want an OTC desk or a corporate account.
You do not need altcoins, a card or regulator-backed protection on your cash.
Choose Robinhood If
You want one flat percentage fee and no Robinhood spread (0.50% to Oct 31, 2026, then 0.95%)
You are a former Bitbuy or Coinsquare customer moving to the new app
You are fine with market orders only for now
Is Bull Bitcoin Or Robinhood Better For Canadians In 2026?
It depends on what you want to own and who you want holding it. Bull Bitcoin is fifth in my ranking at 8.0. Robinhood is not in my top 10 and carries no score. Its Canadian platform only launched on 1 July 2026 and is still mid-migration. If your goal is bitcoin in your own wallet, I lean Bull Bitcoin. If you want a registered dealer and more than one coin, I lean Robinhood. My Bull Bitcoin review and Robinhood review cover each in full.
Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?
Robinhood, on every date. Bull Bitcoin has no processing fee, but a quote on 3 October 2026 (buy US$86,676.96, sell US$83,273.82) works out to a spread of about 2.0% each side. That is my derived figure, not a published rate. On a CAD 1,000 buy it is about CAD 20.
Robinhood charges 0.50% until October 31, so CAD 5, and 0.95% from November 1, so CAD 9.50. It says it keeps no spread. The caveat is slippage: up to 1% on buys and 5% on sells is passed to you on a market order, and Robinhood Canada has market orders only for now. Bull Bitcoin's quote is firm at the screen. That is the one place its higher cost buys you some certainty.
Does The November Fee Rise Change Which One Is Cheaper?
It narrows the gap and does not close it. Before November 1, Bull Bitcoin costs roughly four times Robinhood's fee. After, it costs a little over twice as much. A buyer making a single CAD 5,000 purchase pays roughly CAD 100 to Bull Bitcoin's spread against CAD 25 now or CAD 47.50 later at Robinhood, using the rates above.
The price of that saving is where the coins sit. Robinhood custody means you carry the company's risk until you withdraw. Bull Bitcoin delivers on-chain (free, from 0.001 BTC, about an hour), over Lightning (free up to 0.15 BTC) or to Liquid (free from 0.00001 BTC), so you carry none.
Is Bitcoin Only A Strength Or A Limit?
Both. Bull Bitcoin refuses altcoins by policy, and runs no staking, card or leverage. That keeps the product simple and the risk surface small, which is what many bitcoin buyers want. Robinhood Canada lists 50+ coins, but only against CAD, with no coin-to-coin swaps, so a wider menu does not yet mean a flexible one.
Funding is easier at Bull Bitcoin: Interac e-Transfer has no minimum or maximum on its side and CAD bill payment runs to CAD 100,000. Robinhood shows its Interac and wire limits only inside the app. Bull Bitcoin asks for full identity verification for every method, including Canada Post cash, while Robinhood carries over existing Bitbuy or Coinsquare KYC.
Which Is Safer For Canadians?
They are safe in different ways. Robinhood Canada runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO investment dealer and CSA-registered (decision of 11 October 2024). CIPF covers CAD balances within limits and never crypto, and no proof of reserves was found. Bull Bitcoin holds FINTRAC MSB registration M16730720 to 3 November 2027 but has no CSA decision, no CIRO membership and no CIPF.
A Bull Bitcoin failure cannot freeze coins already paid out. A Robinhood failure could leave uninsured crypto as an unsecured claim. On the other side, a mistaken address or a scam is the user's loss at Bull Bitcoin under its terms, and any CAD left in the account is uninsured.
