Both can put you in leveraged exposure to bitcoin, in very different ways. BTCC offers futures up to 500x on selected contracts. Shakepay lends against your bitcoin through a regulated affiliate. The difference in oversight is the story.

BTCC Vs Shakepay: Which Is Better For Canadians?

For most Canadians, BTCC is the better choice (it wins on my ranking, coins available). Shakepay still comes out ahead on canadian status, CAD funding. Shakepay is best for the simplest way to buy Bitcoin and Ethereum with Interac.

What Happens To Your Money If BTCC Or Shakepay Fails?

BTCC: BTCC Canada Limited is registered with FINTRAC, which is an anti-money-laundering registration, not a securities registration or investor protection. BTCC is not on the CSA list, is not a CIRO member and CIPF never covers crypto. If BTCC fails or freezes your account you have no regulator-backed claim. Its own guide notes some withdrawals face risk or compliance review, and public feedback mentions withdrawal and account-review complaints. High leverage futures can liquidate a position quickly.

Shakepay: CIPF covers the cash and USD you hold at Shakepay, advertised as up to $1 million, but crypto is explicitly not covered. Customer crypto is held in trust with Coinbase Custody (at least 80% cold) and Fireblocks and BitGo hot wallets, and Shakepay's own risk statement warns that insurance may be inadequate and points users to withdraw to a private wallet. A hack, a custodian failure or a freeze can still hit crypto balances. BLOC adds liquidation risk if bitcoin falls, and Shakepay Credit operates under time-limited exemptive relief that runs three years from April 9, 2026, not full registration.

How Are BTCC And Shakepay Treated For Tax In Canada?

BTCC: Spot sales, crypto-to-crypto trades and futures settlement are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export or CRA-ready report was verified, so keep your own records of trades, fees and transfers.

Shakepay: Selling crypto, swapping it (including auto-swap), spending it with the card or repaying with it are dispositions; card cashback in bitcoin is income when received and your cost base starts at that value. Shakepay emails two CSVs (crypto and cash) but issues no tax slips, so you need Koinly or similar.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, BTCC Or Shakepay?

Choose BTCC If

  • You live outside Ontario and Quebec and want offshore futures: BTCC is the one in this group with a Canadian FINTRAC-registered arm.
  • You want regulator protection or CAD funding: use a CSA-registered platform instead.

Choose Shakepay If

  • You want the simplest Interac-funded way to buy Bitcoin or Ethereum from a CIRO-registered firm.
  • You want a bitcoin cashback card or a bitcoin-backed credit line in the same app.
  • You will keep the account active each month to reach Bright or Blue and lower the card and loan costs.
  • You do not need many coins, limit orders or Lightning.

Is BTCC Or Shakepay Better For Canadians In 2026?

Shakepay for most Canadians. BTCC ranks eighth in my table at 7.0 out of 10. Shakepay sits outside my top ten, but it is the more usable service: a Montreal firm launched in 2015, a CIRO investment dealer since January 8, 2025, and on the CSA list. BTCC is not on the CSA list, its guide restricts Ontario and Quebec residents, and I could not verify any CAD funding.

BTCC is a futures exchange. Shakepay is a simple app with Bitcoin, Ethereum and USDC, a prepaid Visa and a bitcoin credit line. If your goal is leveraged trading and you can accept the risks, BTCC is the only one that offers it directly.

See my BTCC review and my Shakepay review for more.

Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?

Shakepay charges no commission. Its cost is a spread targeted at 0.5% to 2.0% over a benchmark price, widening by up to 1.5% more in adverse markets. That is $5 to $20 on $1,000, and more in bad conditions. Auto-swap costs 1.5% on bitcoin and 2% on other assets. BTCC charges 0.2% maker and 0.3% taker on spot, about $2 to $3.

BTCC looks cheaper, but the cheap fee is reachable only after you buy crypto elsewhere. Shakepay's Interac deposits and withdrawals are free and arrive in minutes, with a $5 minimum and $10,000 maximum. For a small buyer, those convenience details count for more than a $10 spread difference.

Which Is Easier To Fund And Cash Out?

Shakepay verifies with photo ID, a security selfie video and an address, with results by email in as little as a few minutes. Interac deposits are free from $5 to $10,000, USDC and Ether deposits clear after about 15 confirmations (roughly 4 minutes), and wires out are free from $10,000 in 1 to 2 working days. Bitcoin leaves free at normal speed (about 12 hours) or in about 10 minutes for a fee, with a 0.00005 BTC minimum. BTCC has no verified CAD route and has not published its KYC time.

Which Is Safer For Canadians?

Shakepay is more protected. CIPF covers the cash and USD you hold, advertised as up to $1 million, but crypto is explicitly not covered. Customer crypto is held in trust, at least 80% in cold storage at Coinbase Custody (insured to US$320M) and the rest in hot wallets through Fireblocks and BitGo. Its own risk statement warns insurance may be inadequate and points users to a private wallet.

BTCC is offshore for a Canadian: not registered with the CSA, no CIRO membership, and a FINTRAC registration that covers anti-money-laundering only. If it freezes your account you have no regulator-backed claim, and a leveraged position can liquidate quickly.

Borrowing Against Bitcoin Or Trading With Leverage: Which Risk Is Gentler?

Two Kinds Of Leverage
QuestionBTCC FuturesShakepay BLOC
MaximumUp to 500x on selected contractsUp to $50,000 borrowed against bitcoin
Cost0.03% maker and 0.055% taker at VIP0APR 9.5% to 11.5% by status
PaymentsNone; positions can liquidateNone fixed while loan stays at or under 50% of collateral
OversightOffshore, FINTRAC AML registration onlyExemptive relief from the CSA, three years from April 9, 2026

Neither is gentle. A credit line against bitcoin still liquidates if the price falls far enough, and high-leverage futures can wipe a position in a small move. The difference is that BLOC has a named Canadian lender under regulator terms, while BTCC leaves you with an offshore counterparty. I have not verified Shakepay's margin and liquidation levels on a primary page, so read the in-app terms before borrowing.

Who Should Choose BTCC And Who Should Choose Shakepay?

Choose Shakepay if you want the simplest Interac-funded way to buy Bitcoin or Ethereum from a CIRO-registered firm, perhaps with the card or the credit line. Keep the account active each month to reach Bright or Blue.

Choose BTCC if you live outside Ontario and Quebec and want futures. Everyone else should compare registered options on my ranked list of exchanges.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Shakepay's BLOC?

It is a bitcoin-backed line of credit from Shakepay Credit Inc., up to $50,000, with an APR of 11.5% at Base, 10.5% at Bright and 9.5% at Blue. There are no fixed payments while the loan stays at or under 50% of the collateral value, and loan proceeds may not be used to buy crypto.

Is Shakepay Credit Fully Registered?

Not fully. The CSA decision of April 9, 2026 gives it time-limited exemptive relief running three years, rather than full registration. Shakepay Credit Inc. also registered with FINTRAC on November 19, 2025.

Can I Fund BTCC With Interac Like Shakepay?

I found no Interac or CAD route for BTCC. Shakepay takes Interac e-Transfer free from $5 to $10,000, and in July 2026 it joined Interac e-Transfer as a Participant, so e-Transfer now runs on its own connection.

Does Shakepay Offer Futures Or Margin Trading?

No. Shakepay lists three assets, Bitcoin, Ethereum and USDC, with one buy and one sell price refreshed every 30 seconds. There are no limit orders, no futures and no margin, so any leverage comes only through its credit line.

Do BTCC And Shakepay Have Limit Orders?

BTCC: Not verified for Canadians. Shakepay: No: the app shows one buy and one sell price refreshed every 30 seconds, and no limit order tool is described.

Which Coins Can You Buy On BTCC And Shakepay?

BTCC: 112 spot assets Shakepay: BTC, ETH and USDC

Is The Spread The Fee On BTCC And Shakepay?

BTCC: BTCC charges maker/taker fees, not a spread. Shakepay: Shakepay charges no commission; its target spread of 0.5% to 2.0%, up to 1.5% more in bad markets, is the cost.

Does CIPF Cover My Crypto On BTCC Or Shakepay?

BTCC: CIPF never covers crypto, and BTCC is not a CIPF member. Shakepay: CIPF protects cash held with Shakepay but never crypto.

Are BTCC And Shakepay Available In Every Province?

BTCC: Ontario and Quebec are restricted per BTCC's own guide; other provinces not named. Shakepay: All 13 provinces and territories per the card page.

Do Interac Deposits Work On Weekends On BTCC And Shakepay?

BTCC: No Interac e-Transfer verified on BTCC. Shakepay: Not published; transfers are listed as available in minutes.

What Is The Minimum Buy On BTCC And Shakepay?

BTCC: Not published. Shakepay: Interac e-Transfer minimum is $5; the app's minimum purchase size: Not published.

Can A Business Use BTCC Or Shakepay?

BTCC: Not verified. Shakepay: Yes, business accounts exist with their own verification.
