BTCC is an offshore futures platform that restricts Ontario and Quebec. Robinhood Canada is a CIRO dealer for spot trading with a flat fee that rises on November 1. They serve different traders, and the safety gap is wide.
BTCC Vs Robinhood: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, BTCC is the better choice (it wins on my ranking, published trading fee, coins available). Robinhood still comes out ahead on canadian status, CAD funding. Robinhood is best for former Bitbuy and Coinsquare customers who want a flat, simple fee.

What Do BTCC And Robinhood Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?
BTCC Only

Copy trading and demo trading: Futures copy trading and a demo account are offered.
VIP program: Fee discounts, priority support and higher withdrawal limits by VIP level.
Robinhood Only

OTC desk: USD deposits and large trades go through the OTC desk at launch, with a quoted spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.
Coinsquare Trade: Request-for-quote product on the Coinsquare platform with a disclosed spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.
What Happens To Your Money If BTCC Or Robinhood Fails?
BTCC: BTCC Canada Limited is registered with FINTRAC, which is an anti-money-laundering registration, not a securities registration or investor protection. BTCC is not on the CSA list, is not a CIRO member and CIPF never covers crypto. If BTCC fails or freezes your account you have no regulator-backed claim. Its own guide notes some withdrawals face risk or compliance review, and public feedback mentions withdrawal and account-review complaints. High leverage futures can liquidate a position quickly.
Robinhood: Robinhood Canada runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO investment dealer, so it is under dealer rules and CIRO supervision. CIPF covers CAD balances within limits but never crypto. Customer crypto stays in CCML's custody arrangement with crime insurance of an unpublished amount, and no proof of reserves was found. If the firm failed or was hacked, uninsured crypto would be an unsecured claim. The platform is in a migration, so features such as limit orders and swaps are still missing.
How Are BTCC And Robinhood Treated For Tax In Canada?
BTCC: Spot sales, crypto-to-crypto trades and futures settlement are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export or CRA-ready report was verified, so keep your own records of trades, fees and transfers.
Robinhood: Buying with CAD is not a disposition. Selling for CAD is, and so is any later swap or spend. Robinhood gives statements and annual tax documents for past Bitbuy and Coinsquare activity; CSV and CRA-ready exports were not verified.
Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.
Which Should You Choose, BTCC Or Robinhood?
Choose BTCC If
You live outside Ontario and Quebec and want offshore futures: BTCC is the one in this group with a Canadian FINTRAC-registered arm.
You want regulator protection or CAD funding: use a CSA-registered platform instead.
Choose Robinhood If
You want one flat percentage fee and no Robinhood spread (0.50% to Oct 31, 2026, then 0.95%)
You are a former Bitbuy or Coinsquare customer moving to the new app
You are fine with market orders only for now
BTCC: Offshore Status
Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and BTCC's own Canadian guide says Ontario and Quebec residents are restricted. No Canadian investor protection applies. It is the offshore futures venue here with a FINTRAC-registered Canadian arm, which is an anti-money-laundering registration and not a securities one.
Is BTCC Or Robinhood Better For Canadians In 2026?
Robinhood, for almost anyone buying and holding. In my ranking BTCC is eighth at 7.0 and Robinhood is not in the top 10, so the score looks like it points the other way. It does not. BTCC rates well as an offshore futures venue. Robinhood rates as a legal Canadian dealer that is still maturing. My BTCC review and Robinhood review spell out both.
Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?
BTCC is cheaper per trade on paper. Spot costs 0.2% maker and 0.3% taker at VIP0, so CAD 1,000 costs CAD 2 to CAD 3. Robinhood costs CAD 5 through October 31, then CAD 9.50 from November 1 under the 0.95% rate. On futures BTCC charges 0.03% maker and 0.055% taker.
Robinhood says it keeps no spread, though slippage up to 1% on buys and 5% on sells passes to the client on market orders. BTCC has no verified CAD route and charges network fees on crypto withdrawals that vary and are not published as fixed amounts.
Which Is Safer For Canadians?
Robinhood Canada runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO investment dealer with a CSA decision dated 11 October 2024. It is under dealer rules and CIRO supervision. CIPF covers CAD balances within limits and never crypto. Crime insurance is claimed at an unpublished amount and no proof of reserves was found.
BTCC is not on the CSA list, is not a CIRO member and has no CIPF cover. If it fails or freezes you, you have no regulator-backed claim. High-leverage futures, up to 500x on selected contracts, can liquidate a position quickly.
Does BTCC's Canadian Entity Change Anything?
A little. BTCC Canada Limited is a federal corporation in Toronto with FINTRAC MSB registration M20713346, approved 27 May 2020 and valid to 15 October 2027. That gives you a Canadian company to look up. The Terms of Use, though, are with BTCC Limited in Hong Kong.
FINTRAC registration is an anti-money-laundering check and not a securities registration. It does not make BTCC a CSA-registered platform. Ontario and Quebec residents are also restricted per its own guide, so a reader in either province has no route at all.
Where Do Futures Traders Land When Robinhood Has None?
This is the practical gap. If you want leverage and perpetual contracts, Robinhood does not serve you. BTCC does, outside two provinces, with copy trading and a demo account. If you want a place to buy and hold, Robinhood does and BTCC does not offer a CAD route. They are two different jobs. Trading costs are only part of it. BTCC's app is rated 4.32 on the Canadian App Store from 1,010 ratings and 4.3 on Google Play from 18K reviews, while Robinhood's Canadian iOS app sits at 2.90 from 97 ratings, so neither wins on polish.

Who Should Choose BTCC, And Who Should Choose Robinhood?

Choose BTCC only if you live outside Ontario and Quebec, want offshore futures and understand no investor protection applies. If you just want to own crypto, the ranking page is a better starting point.
