BTCC is an offshore exchange with futures and a FINTRAC-registered Canadian arm. Kraken is a CSA Restricted Dealer with free Interac deposits. They chase different traders, and the differences in protection are bigger than the differences in fees.
BTCC Vs Kraken: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, Kraken is the better choice (it wins on canadian status, my ranking, CAD funding, coins available). BTCC still comes out ahead on published trading fee. BTCC is best for offshore futures traders.

Kraken
Description
BTCC is a futures-focused crypto exchange operating since 2011. It has a Canadian arm, BTCC Canada Limited, registered with FINTRAC as a money services business, but it is not on the CSA list of platforms authorized to serve Canadians and its own Canadian guide says Ontario and Quebec residents are restricted.
Kraken is a Canada-friendly, US-based crypto exchange operating since 2011. In April 2025 it became a registered Restricted Dealer in Canada, valid in every province and territory. It has a strong reputation for security and offers a wide range of coins, with CAD trading pairs that spare Canadians foreign exchange fees.

What Do BTCC And Kraken Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?
BTCC Only
USDT-M and Coin-M perpetual futures: Leverage up to 500x on selected contracts. Futures fees at VIP0 are 0.055% taker and 0.03% maker. Ontario and Quebec residents are restricted.
Copy trading and demo trading: Futures copy trading and a demo account are offered.
VIP program: Fee discounts, priority support and higher withdrawal limits by VIP level.
Kraken Only
Kraken Pro: Order book trading with maker/taker fees from 0.40% / 0.80%, down to 0.0% / 0.10% at USD 10M monthly volume. Tiers can also be reached by holding assets on the platform (USD 20K for Tier 3).
Staking: Flexible staking with an on-chain unbonding period carries a 20% commission. Canadians cannot stake GRT or FLR, use Opt-In Rewards, or use Babylon Bitcoin staking, and ETH2.S cannot be traded.
Kraken+: Subscription giving zero trading fees on up to USD 10,000 (or CAD equivalent) a month in Buy, Sell and Convert, with spreads and card fees still applying. The subscription price was not retrieved.
Recurring buys: Recurring trades are charged the 1% Instant Buy fee plus a spread.
What Happens To Your Money If BTCC Or Kraken Fails?
BTCC: BTCC Canada Limited is registered with FINTRAC, which is an anti-money-laundering registration, not a securities registration or investor protection. BTCC is not on the CSA list, is not a CIRO member and CIPF never covers crypto. If BTCC fails or freezes your account you have no regulator-backed claim. Its own guide notes some withdrawals face risk or compliance review, and public feedback mentions withdrawal and account-review complaints. High leverage futures can liquidate a position quickly.
Kraken: Kraken is a CSA Restricted Dealer, which brings regulator oversight, loss notifications and purchase caps, but its client assets are not covered by CIPF and Kraken says so. Kraken publishes third-party proof of reserves (June 2026 ratios 100.3% to 102.9% for the five largest assets), which shows assets were held at the snapshot but is not insurance, and no insurance amount is published. Residual risks are exchange hacks, an insolvency where you are an unsecured creditor, and restrictions that can force you to withdraw coins Kraken later removes for Canada.
How Are BTCC And Kraken Treated For Tax In Canada?
BTCC: Spot sales, crypto-to-crypto trades and futures settlement are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export or CRA-ready report was verified, so keep your own records of trades, fees and transfers.
Kraken: Selling, converting one coin to another and staking rewards are taxable events. Kraken exports ledger and trade history as CSV and links to Koinly, which can produce a CRA Schedule 3 report; Kraken does not produce a CRA-ready report itself.
Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.
Which Should You Choose, BTCC Or Kraken?
Choose BTCC If
You live outside Ontario and Quebec and want offshore futures: BTCC is the one in this group with a Canadian FINTRAC-registered arm.
You want regulator protection or CAD funding: use a CSA-registered platform instead.
Choose Kraken If
You want the widest coin list available to Canadians and a real order book.
You will use Kraken Pro rather than Instant Buy to keep trading costs near 0.4% to 0.8%.
You value published proof of reserves over a CIRO dealer.
Is BTCC Or Kraken Better For Canadians In 2026?
Kraken for nearly everyone. It is #3 on my list at 9.2. BTCC is #8 at 7.0 and is offshore, so it comes with a label that Kraken does not need.
BTCC Canada Limited is a Toronto company with a FINTRAC MSB registration, approved May 27, 2020 and valid to October 15, 2027. That registration is an anti-money-laundering one. It is not a securities registration and it is not investor protection. BTCC is not on the CSA list, is not a CIRO member, and BTCC's own Canadian guide says Ontario and Quebec residents are restricted. The terms of use are with BTCC Limited in Hong Kong. Kraken, by contrast, is a CSA Restricted Dealer under the OSC, available in all provinces and territories.
Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?
On spot, BTCC's headline number is lower. At VIP0 it charges 0.2% maker and 0.3% taker. Kraken Pro starts at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker. On CAD 1,000 that is CAD 3 against CAD 8 for a taker order, or CAD 2 against CAD 4 for a maker order. Kraken's Instant Buy is 1% on top of an unpublished spread, so skip it for size.
But cost is not just the fee. Kraken takes Interac e-Transfer deposits for free, with CAD 5 as the minimum and CAD 10,000 per transaction as the cap. I could not verify any CAD or Interac route into BTCC, so treat it as crypto-funded. That means buying coins somewhere else, paying that platform's fee, then paying a network fee to send them. Add that up and a CAD 5 saving on a CAD 1,000 trade tends to vanish.
Which Is Safer For Canadians?
Kraken publishes third-party proof of reserves, with a June 30, 2026 snapshot showing BTC at 102.9% and ETH at 100.5%, and it tells you plainly that client assets are not covered by CIPF. BTCC says it segregates assets and uses multi-signature cold wallets, which is its own wording, and I could not verify proof of reserves.
If BTCC freezes an account or fails, you have no regulator-backed claim. BTCC's guide also notes that some withdrawals face a risk or compliance review, and public feedback mentions withdrawal and account-review complaints. That does not prove a pattern, but it is the sort of friction you accept on offshore venues. Neither platform covers crypto with CIPF.
What About Futures And Leverage?
This is where BTCC exists at all. It offers USDT-M and Coin-M perpetual futures, with leverage up to 500x on selected contracts, copy trading and a demo account. Futures fees at VIP0 are 0.03% maker and 0.055% taker.
Kraken offers no margin or derivatives to Canadians, so if perpetuals are the whole point, Kraken cannot help you. High leverage can liquidate a position very fast, and a futures settlement is a disposition for CRA purposes. If you are asking whether you need 500x, you probably do not. Consider Coinbase's regulated derivatives, which launched September 2, 2026, though they are for eligible investors only.
Who Should Choose BTCC And Who Should Choose Kraken?
Think of it as a safety-versus-speculation split.
Choose Kraken if you want a registered exchange with CAD funding. You fund by Interac, trade spot on Kraken Pro, and want proof of reserves and a CSA Restricted Dealer behind the account.
Choose BTCC only if futures are the point and you accept offshore risk. You live outside Ontario and Quebec, you already hold crypto to deposit, and you understand that no regulator-backed claim stands behind your balance.
Kraken republished its fee schedule, Pro spot 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker at the entry tier.
Date of Kraken's latest proof-of-reserves snapshot, with BTC at 102.9% and ETH at 100.5%.
The CSA issued its Restricted Dealer decision for Payward Canada Inc. (Kraken).
BTCC Canada Limited's FINTRAC MSB registration was approved. It expires October 15, 2027.
Frequently Asked Questions
