What Happens To Your Money If BloFin Or Shakepay Fails?

BloFin: BloFin is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB registration, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. CIPF never covers crypto and BloFin is not a member anyway. Because Canada is a Restricted Location, an account opened from Canada through a VPN or false address can be frozen, with funds inside. We could not verify insurance, proof of reserves or cold storage shares. If the exchange fails or is hacked, a Canadian has no regulator to complain to.

Shakepay: CIPF covers the cash and USD you hold at Shakepay, advertised as up to $1 million, but crypto is explicitly not covered. Customer crypto is held in trust with Coinbase Custody (at least 80% cold) and Fireblocks and BitGo hot wallets, and Shakepay's own risk statement warns that insurance may be inadequate and points users to withdraw to a private wallet. A hack, a custodian failure or a freeze can still hit crypto balances. BLOC adds liquidation risk if bitcoin falls, and Shakepay Credit operates under time-limited exemptive relief that runs three years from April 9, 2026, not full registration.

How Are BloFin And Shakepay Treated For Tax In Canada?

BloFin: Spot sales, crypto-to-crypto trades and futures settlement are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export or CRA-ready report was verified, so Canadians would have to rebuild records from trade history.

Shakepay: Selling crypto, swapping it (including auto-swap), spending it with the card or repaying with it are dispositions; card cashback in bitcoin is income when received and your cost base starts at that value. Shakepay emails two CSVs (crypto and cash) but issues no tax slips, so you need Koinly or similar.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, BloFin Or Shakepay?

Choose BloFin If

  • You want a regulated route: pick a CSA-registered platform instead, BloFin does not serve Canadians.
  • You wanted perpetual swaps: BloFin is not an option from Canada, so check a registered dealer's derivatives offer.

Choose Shakepay If

  • You want the simplest Interac-funded way to buy Bitcoin or Ethereum from a CIRO-registered firm.
  • You want a bitcoin cashback card or a bitcoin-backed credit line in the same app.
  • You will keep the account active each month to reach Bright or Blue and lower the card and loan costs.
  • You do not need many coins, limit orders or Lightning.

Is BloFin Or Shakepay Better For Canadians In 2026?

Shakepay, for anyone who can only use one. It is a CIRO investment dealer member since January 8, 2025, on the CSA list and available in all provinces and territories. BloFin lists Canada as a Restricted Location, so a Canadian has no clean way in, and no CAD way to fund it even if there were.

BloFin scores 9.6 on my list and is my number 2. Shakepay is outside my top 10 and has no score. The gap shows how little a rank says about legality. Read the BloFin review and the Shakepay review for more.

Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?

BloFin spot is CAD 1.00 per side on CAD 1,000. Shakepay's spread is a band of 0.5% to 2.0% over the benchmark, so CAD 5 to CAD 20 on the same amount, and up to 1.5% more in adverse conditions. The band is wide, and what you pay on a given day sits somewhere inside it.

Shakepay is honest about what it does not publish. There is no live quote I can cite, so I would test it with a small order. On the BloFin side, remember the path: there is no CAD in, so the trade starts after you have paid a registered platform to buy the crypto.

Does A Card And A Credit Line Beat Leverage?

They answer different questions. BloFin's public API shows leverage up to 150x, which is a bet that works until it does not. Shakepay's BLOC lets you borrow against bitcoin you already hold, with no fixed payments while the loan stays at 50% LTV or below.

Both can hurt. BLOC adds liquidation risk if bitcoin falls, and Shakepay Credit operates under time-limited exemptive relief that runs three years from April 9, 2026, not full registration. I would still take a regulated credit line with a published APR over leverage from a platform that bars Canadians.

Which Is Safer For Canadians?

Shakepay holds at least 80% of customer crypto in cold storage at Coinbase Custody, with US$320M insured, and the rest in hot wallets through Fireblocks and BitGo. CIPF covers cash, up to CAD 1 million advertised, but never crypto, and Shakepay's own risk statement points users to a private wallet for long-term storage.

BloFin gives you no Canadian regulator, no CIPF, and nothing I could verify on reserves or insurance. A Canadian account can be frozen with the funds inside.

Who Should Choose BloFin And Who Should Choose Shakepay?

Not BloFin, in my view, if you live in Canada. Choose Shakepay if you want the simplest Interac route into Bitcoin or Ethereum, or a bitcoin cashback card, and you do not need limit orders or many coins. Open the Shakepay sign-up page and see the current offer, or look at the best crypto exchanges in Canada.

How Do Shakepay's Status Levels Change The Price?

Shakepay has three levels, Base, Bright and Blue, and you keep the account active each month to reach the higher two. Card cashback is 1%, 1% and 1.5%. CAD interest is 1.5%, 2% and 3%. BLOC borrowing costs 11.5%, 10.5% and 9.5% APR. The foreign fee on the card is 3%, 1.5% or 0%.

ShakingSats, the daily shake-your-phone reward, caps at 10 sats a day at Base, up to 100 at Bright and up to 500 at Blue. It is a small thing and it is real. Rates are variable and not guaranteed.

What Does Shakepay Not Do?

No limit orders, no Lightning, and only three coins. USDC converts one to one to USD. Bitcoin out is free at normal speed, about 12 hours, or about 10 minutes for a fee, with a minimum of 0.00005 BTC. The auto-swap that converts some ERC-20 deposits costs 1.5% on BTC and 2% on others.

If a tool you need is on that list, Shakepay is the wrong platform and BloFin is not the right one. Use a registered alternative with a wider list from the top Canadian exchanges.
