BloFin has the lower fee and the bigger product list. Robinhood has the legal footing and the CAD funding. The fee gap is real, and so is the question of whether it matters when one side cannot open an account.
BloFin Vs Robinhood: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, BloFin is the better choice (it wins on my ranking, published trading fee, coins available). Robinhood still comes out ahead on canadian status, CAD funding. Robinhood is best for former Bitbuy and Coinsquare customers who want a flat, simple fee.

Slippage within 1% on buys and 5% on sells passes to the client. Ranges reflect each platform’s published band, not a single quote. Bank and network fees are not included.
What Do BloFin And Robinhood Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?
BloFin Only
Perpetual swaps: 495 base assets (519 swap instruments) with maximum leverage up to 150x per the public API. Futures base fees are 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker. Not available to Canadians.
Copy trading: Listed as a service in the Terms of Use alongside futures and spot trading.
Robinhood Only
Staking (announced): ETH and SOL staking from about CAD 1, listed as coming soon; CCML's schedule shows a staking fee of up to 30% of rewards on the former Coinsquare platform.
OTC desk: USD deposits and large trades go through the OTC desk at launch, with a quoted spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.
Coinsquare Trade: Request-for-quote product on the Coinsquare platform with a disclosed spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.
What Happens To Your Money If BloFin Or Robinhood Fails?
BloFin: BloFin is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB registration, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. CIPF never covers crypto and BloFin is not a member anyway. Because Canada is a Restricted Location, an account opened from Canada through a VPN or false address can be frozen, with funds inside. We could not verify insurance, proof of reserves or cold storage shares. If the exchange fails or is hacked, a Canadian has no regulator to complain to.
Robinhood: Robinhood Canada runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO investment dealer, so it is under dealer rules and CIRO supervision. CIPF covers CAD balances within limits but never crypto. Customer crypto stays in CCML's custody arrangement with crime insurance of an unpublished amount, and no proof of reserves was found. If the firm failed or was hacked, uninsured crypto would be an unsecured claim. The platform is in a migration, so features such as limit orders and swaps are still missing.
How Are BloFin And Robinhood Treated For Tax In Canada?
BloFin: Spot sales, crypto-to-crypto trades and futures settlement are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export or CRA-ready report was verified, so Canadians would have to rebuild records from trade history.
Robinhood: Buying with CAD is not a disposition. Selling for CAD is, and so is any later swap or spend. Robinhood gives statements and annual tax documents for past Bitbuy and Coinsquare activity; CSV and CRA-ready exports were not verified.
Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.
Which Should You Choose, BloFin Or Robinhood?
Choose BloFin If
You want a regulated route: pick a CSA-registered platform instead, BloFin does not serve Canadians.
You wanted perpetual swaps: BloFin is not an option from Canada, so check a registered dealer's derivatives offer.
Choose Robinhood If
You want one flat percentage fee and no Robinhood spread (0.50% to Oct 31, 2026, then 0.95%)
You are a former Bitbuy or Coinsquare customer moving to the new app
You are fine with market orders only for now
BloFin: Offshore Status
Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its Terms of Use list Canada as a Restricted Location. No Canadian investor protection applies. On paper it suits active derivatives traders, but Canadians are not permitted to use it.
Is BloFin Or Robinhood Better For Canadians In 2026?
Robinhood, because Canadians can actually use it. BloFin is second in my ranking at 9.6, while Robinhood is not scored, and that looks odd until you notice BloFin lists Canada as a Restricted Location in its Terms of Use. A great product you are not permitted to use has a score and no value to you. See my Robinhood review for what is still missing from its app.
Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?
BloFin is cheaper by a wide margin on paper. Spot is 0.1% maker and taker, so a CAD 1,000 trade costs CAD 1. Robinhood costs CAD 5 on the same trade until the end of October, and CAD 9.50 from 1 November when the 0.95% rate starts. That is a nine-and-a-half-times gap, which sounds like a lot until you remember BloFin has no CAD route.
Robinhood's flat fee is simple. There is no spread, and Interac e-Transfer in and out is free from Robinhood (your bank may charge). Domestic wire fees are shown in the app. Because Robinhood trades only against CAD with market orders, you will not find a cheaper maker price on the platform, but you also will not find a hidden one.
The honest caveat is slippage. On a market order, price movement of up to 1% on buys and up to 5% on sells is passed to you. On a calm day that is nothing. In a fast market it can dwarf the fee. BloFin's order book lets you rest a limit order and control that, which is a real advantage to a trader and one Robinhood Canada does not yet match.
Which Is Safer For Canadians?
Robinhood Canada is the safer of the two by structure. Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd. is a CIRO investment dealer and CSA-registered (decision of 11 October 2024), so it falls under dealer rules and CIRO supervision. CIPF covers CAD balances within limits and never covers crypto. Crime insurance is claimed at an unpublished amount, and no proof of reserves was found.
BloFin has no CSA decision, no CIRO membership and no FINTRAC match in the data I checked. Its insurance and proof of reserves were not verified. A Canadian account can be frozen with funds inside, and there is no regulator to call.
Is A Cheaper Fee Worth Giving Up A Legal Account?
No, and the math shows why. Saving CAD 4 to CAD 8.50 on a CAD 1,000 trade is a small win against the possibility of a frozen account. The one thing BloFin offers that Robinhood does not is derivatives: 495 perpetual-swap base assets, leverage up to 150x and copy trading. None of that is open to Canadians through BloFin. Robinhood Canada has no derivatives product that I could find.
If you need leverage, check what a registered dealer offers. Coinbase launched regulated derivatives for eligible Canadian investors on 2 September 2026.
