BloFin charges 0.1% on spot and Newton charges a spread of 1.00% to 1.15% on the majors. Ten times the price sounds like an easy call. Then you check where each can legally take your money.
BloFin Vs Newton: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, BloFin is the better choice (it wins on my ranking, published trading fee, coins available). Newton still comes out ahead on canadian status, CAD funding. Newton is best for beginners who want a Canadian-regulated dealer with free CAD funding.

BloFin: Base-tier spot maker/taker 0.1% each per BloFin help centre (Oct 29 2024) and fee page, checked 2026-10-01. Not usable from Canada. Newton: Standard Silver-tier spread fee shown at trade time: 1.00% to 1.15% on BTC, ETH and USDC, up to 1.60% on other assets, checked 2026-10-03 on Newton's fee article. Signature status lowers it, to 0.05% at CAD 5M of trailing 365-day volume. Ranges reflect each platform’s published band, not a single quote. Bank and network fees are not included.
What Do BloFin And Newton Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?
BloFin Only
Perpetual swaps: 495 base assets (519 swap instruments) with maximum leverage up to 150x per the public API. Futures base fees are 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker. Not available to Canadians.
Copy trading: Listed as a service in the Terms of Use alongside futures and spot trading.
Staking: Up to 4.5% APY shown for ETH, SOL and ADA (estimates, not guaranteed). Newton keeps 30% of ETH rewards plus execution income, 27% of SOL rewards plus MEV rewards, and 7.5% of ADA rewards. Staked assets are locked.
Recurring buys: Set an amount, a coin and a frequency for automatic purchases.
Referral program: A friend gets a CAD 20 bonus after signing up and trading CAD 100 within 90 days; the referrer earns up to CAD 100 depending on activity.
What Happens To Your Money If BloFin Or Newton Fails?
BloFin: BloFin is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB registration, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. CIPF never covers crypto and BloFin is not a member anyway. Because Canada is a Restricted Location, an account opened from Canada through a VPN or false address can be frozen, with funds inside. We could not verify insurance, proof of reserves or cold storage shares. If the exchange fails or is hacked, a Canadian has no regulator to complain to.
Newton: As a CIRO investment dealer member since March 2026, cash left in a Newton account is covered by CIPF, but Newton states crypto is not protected by CIPF, CDIC or any investor protection scheme. Over 80% of assets are kept offline and Newton says it carries crypto insurance, but it gives no amount and the custodian is not named on the current page, and no proof of reserves is published. An exchange hack or insolvency would leave you relying on that insurance and on the dealer's regulatory capital rules for the portion you cannot withdraw in time.
How Are BloFin And Newton Treated For Tax In Canada?
BloFin: Spot sales, crypto-to-crypto trades and futures settlement are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export or CRA-ready report was verified, so Canadians would have to rebuild records from trade history.
Newton: Selling, swapping one coin for another and staking rewards are dispositions or income; buying and withdrawing to your own wallet are not. Newton exports your history as a Koinly-formatted CSV and links directly to Koinly; there is no CRA-ready report from Newton.
Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.
Which Should You Choose, BloFin Or Newton?
Choose BloFin If
You want a regulated route: pick a CSA-registered platform instead, BloFin does not serve Canadians.
You wanted perpetual swaps: BloFin is not an option from Canada, so check a registered dealer's derivatives offer.
Choose Newton If
You want a Canadian-only CIRO dealer with free Interac and EFT funding and a simple app.
You trade small amounts of the majors and prefer one visible price over order book mechanics.
You trade over CAD 1M a year and can reach Signature tiers that cut the fee below 1%.
Is BloFin Or Newton Better For Canadians In 2026?
Newton, for anyone who wants an account that stays open. BloFin is rated higher on my list, 9.6 against Newton's 7.9, but that score does not override its Terms of Use, which list Canada as a Restricted Location. Newton is a CIRO dealer, cash is covered by CIPF, and funding by Interac e-Transfer or pre-authorized debit is free.
The honest read is that BloFin is the better trading venue and Newton is the better place for a Canadian to use. See my BloFin review and Newton review.
Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?
BloFin: 0.1% spot, so CAD 1.00 per side on CAD 1,000. Newton: a spread of 1.00% to 1.15% on BTC, ETH and USDC, so CAD 10.00 to 11.50 on CAD 1,000, and up to 1.60% on other coins, so up to CAD 16.00. Newton says the spread is its only trading cost, shown before you confirm.
That is a CAD 9 to 10 gap on a thousand dollars, and it is real. But you cannot buy BloFin with CAD. To get crypto to BloFin you first buy it on a registered platform and pay that platform's cost, then withdraw it. The BloFin number is the second leg of a two-leg trip.
Can Newton's Fee Tiers Ever Compete With BloFin?
Only at volumes most readers will never reach. Newton's Gold tier starts at CAD 100,000 of trailing 365-day volume and brings BTC, ETH and USDC to 1.00%, which is where the standard tier already starts on BTC. Platinum at CAD 1 million gets 0.85%, Diamond at CAD 2 million gets 0.50%, and Onyx at CAD 5 million gets 0.05%.
For a small account the tiers are irrelevant. Newton's case is simplicity: market and limit orders, up to 20 open limit orders, and you can start with as little as CAD 50.
Which Is Safer For Canadians?
Newton has CIRO oversight, a CSA decision, SOC 2 Type II, and says over 80% of assets are stored offline with crypto insurance of an unpublished amount. CIPF covers cash, never crypto, and no proof of reserves is published.
BloFin has none of the Canadian layers. If it fails or freezes an account opened from Canada, you have no regulator and no CIPF, and I could not verify insurance or reserves. That is the whole safety question.
Who Should Choose BloFin And Who Should Choose Newton?
I would not choose BloFin as a Canadian. If you want futures, look at what a registered dealer provides. Choose Newton if you want a CIRO dealer, free CAD funding and a clear price, and your trades are small. Start at the Newton sign-up page, or compare more options in the best crypto exchanges in Canada.
What Does A Small Newton Trade Look Like?
Newton says you can start with as little as CAD 50. At the 1.00% to 1.15% spread on a major coin that is about CAD 0.50 to 0.58, shown before you confirm. Interac e-Transfer in is free up to CAD 10,000 per request and CAD 70,000 weekly, and withdrawals by Interac are free up to CAD 10,000 a transaction.
Sending crypto out has lanes. For BTC and Ethereum, Fast costs CAD 10 plus the network fee and takes about 30 minutes, Standard costs the network fee and takes about 2 hours, and a Free nightly batch exists. Newton covers up to CAD 5 a day of network cost.
What Limits Does Newton Apply?
Net purchase caps of CAD 30,000 apply on restricted coins outside AB, BC, MB, SK and QC. The official coin list shows 59 CAD pairs and may lag delistings, since UMA and SKL were still listed. There is no order book, but you can place limit orders, up to 20 open at once.
BloFin has an order book and 242 live spot pairs, with no Canadian limits and no Canadian access.
