BloFin outscores Kraken in my table, 9.6 to 9.2, but BloFin's own Terms of Use list Canada as a Restricted Location. Kraken is a CSA Restricted Dealer that takes Canadians with free Interac funding. Here is how that plays out in practice.
BloFin Vs Kraken: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, BloFin is the better choice (it wins on my ranking, published trading fee). Kraken still comes out ahead on canadian status, CAD funding, coins available. Kraken is best for beginners who want to learn, then cheaper trading on Kraken Pro.

What Are The Key Differences Between BloFin And Kraken?
BloFin Vs Kraken: Side By Side
BloFin
Kraken
Description
BloFin is a crypto-funded derivatives and spot exchange built for active traders, with perpetual swaps, copy trading and a small spot market. It is not registered in Canada and its Terms of Use name Canada as a Restricted Location, so it is not available to Canadians.
Kraken is a Canada-friendly, US-based crypto exchange operating since 2011. In April 2025 it became a registered Restricted Dealer in Canada, valid in every province and territory. It has a strong reputation for security and offers a wide range of coins, with CAD trading pairs that spare Canadians foreign exchange fees.
Coins
235 spot assets across 242 live spot pairs and 495 perpetual-swap base assets (public API, 2026-10-01).

Fees
Spot 0.1% maker and 0.1% taker at the base tier. Futures 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker at the Regular tier. No platform withdrawal fee, only the network fee. No CAD funding.

BloFin: Base-tier spot maker/taker 0.1% each per BloFin help centre (Oct 29 2024) and fee page, checked 2026-10-01. Not usable from Canada. Kraken: Kraken Pro base tier 0.40% maker / 0.80% taker (Tier 1, USD 0 volume), checked 2026-10-03. The high end is the 1% Instant Buy fee, which is charged on top of a spread Kraken does not publish. Custom orders are 1.5%. Ranges reflect each platform’s published band, not a single quote. Bank and network fees are not included.
What Do BloFin And Kraken Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?
BloFin Only
Perpetual swaps: 495 base assets (519 swap instruments) with maximum leverage up to 150x per the public API. Futures base fees are 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker. Not available to Canadians.
Copy trading: Listed as a service in the Terms of Use alongside futures and spot trading.
Kraken Only
Kraken Pro: Order book trading with maker/taker fees from 0.40% / 0.80%, down to 0.0% / 0.10% at USD 10M monthly volume. Tiers can also be reached by holding assets on the platform (USD 20K for Tier 3).
Staking: Flexible staking with an on-chain unbonding period carries a 20% commission. Canadians cannot stake GRT or FLR, use Opt-In Rewards, or use Babylon Bitcoin staking, and ETH2.S cannot be traded.
Kraken+: Subscription giving zero trading fees on up to USD 10,000 (or CAD equivalent) a month in Buy, Sell and Convert, with spreads and card fees still applying. The subscription price was not retrieved.
Recurring buys: Recurring trades are charged the 1% Instant Buy fee plus a spread.
What Happens To Your Money If BloFin Or Kraken Fails?
BloFin: BloFin is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB registration, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. CIPF never covers crypto and BloFin is not a member anyway. Because Canada is a Restricted Location, an account opened from Canada through a VPN or false address can be frozen, with funds inside. We could not verify insurance, proof of reserves or cold storage shares. If the exchange fails or is hacked, a Canadian has no regulator to complain to.
Kraken: Kraken is a CSA Restricted Dealer, which brings regulator oversight, loss notifications and purchase caps, but its client assets are not covered by CIPF and Kraken says so. Kraken publishes third-party proof of reserves (June 2026 ratios 100.3% to 102.9% for the five largest assets), which shows assets were held at the snapshot but is not insurance, and no insurance amount is published. Residual risks are exchange hacks, an insolvency where you are an unsecured creditor, and restrictions that can force you to withdraw coins Kraken later removes for Canada.
How Are BloFin And Kraken Treated For Tax In Canada?
BloFin: Spot sales, crypto-to-crypto trades and futures settlement are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export or CRA-ready report was verified, so Canadians would have to rebuild records from trade history.
Kraken: Selling, converting one coin to another and staking rewards are taxable events. Kraken exports ledger and trade history as CSV and links to Koinly, which can produce a CRA Schedule 3 report; Kraken does not produce a CRA-ready report itself.
Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.
Which Should You Choose, BloFin Or Kraken?
Choose BloFin If
You want a regulated route: pick a CSA-registered platform instead, BloFin does not serve Canadians.
You wanted perpetual swaps: BloFin is not an option from Canada, so check a registered dealer's derivatives offer.
Choose Kraken If
You want the widest coin list available to Canadians and a real order book.
You will use Kraken Pro rather than Instant Buy to keep trading costs near 0.4% to 0.8%.
You value published proof of reserves over a CIRO dealer.
Is BloFin Or Kraken Better For Canadians In 2026?
Kraken. My table scores BloFin 9.6 and Kraken 9.2, but the score measures fees and features. It cannot make a platform legal for you to use. BloFin's Terms of Use list Canada as a Restricted Location, it has no CAD route, it is not on the CSA list (last updated September 18, 2026) and I found no FINTRAC match across 8,662 registry rows on October 1, 2026. That is zero of 13 provinces.
Kraken is a CSA Restricted Dealer with the OSC as principal regulator (decision dated April 1, 2025), registered as a FINTRAC MSB, and open in every province and territory. It is not a CIRO member, and CIPF does not cover its client assets. It does accept Canadians, with free Interac deposits.
BloFin on paper: spot is 0.1% for makers and takers alike, which is $1 on a $1,000 trade, and futures start at 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker. Kraken Pro starts at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, so the same $1,000 costs $4 or $8. Instant Buy is 1% plus a spread Kraken does not publish, and Kraken+ waives the fee on up to US$10,000 a month while spreads still apply.
A full round trip on Kraken Pro as a taker, $1,000 in and $1,000 out, is roughly $16 in trading fees, plus $10 to take the cash out by Interac. BloFin's round trip would be about $2, but there is no way for a Canadian to fund it in dollars, so the saving is theoretical. The fee edge is real only for someone who is allowed to use the platform.
Which Is Safer For Canadians?
Kraken has the more checkable record. Beyond the registration, it publishes third-party proof of reserves, and the June 2026 ratios for its five largest assets ran from 100.3% to 102.9%. Its risks are the standard ones for a custodial exchange: a hack, or an insolvency where you rank as an unsecured creditor, plus the chance that Kraken removes a coin for Canada and forces you to withdraw it.
BloFin is an offshore platform for a Canadian. It is not registered with the CSA, and its Terms restrict Canadian residents, so no Canadian investor protection applies. The Terms do not name the operating entity, the arbitration seat is Hong Kong, and I could not verify insurance, proof of reserves or the cold-storage share. An account opened from Canada can be frozen with the funds inside, and no regulator will take the complaint.

Every row in BloFin's column belongs to a service Canadians are barred from, and Kraken's lowest tiers need trading volume or a large balance held on the platform. For a small Canadian account, the realistic comparison is Kraken Pro at 0.40% to 0.80% against nothing, because BloFin is not on the table.
Who Should Choose BloFin And Who Should Choose Kraken?
Choose Kraken if you want the widest coin list a Canadian can reach (about 490 tickers by my derived count), a real order book on Kraken Pro, and published proof of reserves. Start with Interac and use Pro rather than Instant Buy.
Choose BloFin if you are not a Canadian resident. If you are, the honest answer is that BloFin is not an option, and my ranked list of exchanges shows the registered ones in order.
: Kraken republishes its fee schedule page, with Pro spot at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker at the entry tier.
: The CSA list of authorized platforms is updated; BloFin is not on it.
: Date of Kraken's latest independent proof-of-reserves snapshot.
: BloFin lists 11 new USDC spot pairs.
: Kraken (Payward Canada Inc.) receives its CSA Restricted Dealer decision and announces free Interac deposits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why Does BloFin Score Higher Than Kraken If Canadians Cannot Use It?
The score rates fees and product range, not whether a Canadian is allowed to sign up. A high score does not make BloFin usable from Canada, and it does not change what the Terms of Use say. For an actual account, Kraken is the practical pick.
What Does Kraken's Proof Of Reserves Show?
An independent accountant's snapshot dated June 30, 2026 put reserves at 102.9% for BTC, 100.5% for ETH, 100.6% for SOL, 102.3% for XRP and 100.3% for ADA. That shows the assets were held on that date. It is not insurance, and Kraken publishes no insurance amount.
What Does It Cost To Take Canadian Dollars Out Of Kraken?
An Interac withdrawal costs $10 and tops out at $10,000 per transaction. Deposits by Interac are free from $5 to $10,000. Plan around the $10 if you move money in and out often.
Can I Get Futures On Kraken As A Canadian?
No. Kraken lists margin and derivatives as unavailable to Canadians. If perpetual swaps are what you want, BloFin's 495 swap base assets are not an option either, because Canada is a restricted location in its Terms.
Do BloFin And Kraken Have Limit Orders?
BloFin: Not verified for Canadians, who cannot use the platform. Kraken: Yes, on Kraken Pro with maker fees from 0.40%.
Which Coins Can You Buy On BloFin And Kraken?
BloFin: 235 spot assets Kraken: About 490 (derived)
Is The Spread The Fee On BloFin And Kraken?
BloFin: BloFin charges maker/taker fees, not a spread. Kraken: Yes, Instant Buy adds a spread on top of the 1% fee; Pro has no spread but charges maker/taker fees.
Does CIPF Cover My Crypto On BloFin Or Kraken?
BloFin: CIPF never covers crypto, and BloFin is not a CIPF member. Kraken: CIPF never covers crypto, and Kraken makes users acknowledge that its client assets are not covered.
Are BloFin And Kraken Available In Every Province?
BloFin: None, Canada is a Restricted Location in the Terms of Use. Kraken: All provinces and territories, with CAD 30,000 net caps outside AB, BC, MB, QC and SK on assets other than BTC, ETH, LTC and BCH.
Do Interac Deposits Work On Weekends On BloFin And Kraken?
BloFin: No Interac e-Transfer exists on BloFin. Kraken: Kraken says e-Transfer takes 0 to 1 business days or arrives instantly; no weekend rule is published.
What Is The Minimum Buy On BloFin And Kraken?
BloFin: Not applicable, Canadians cannot fund an account. Kraken: Interac deposits start at CAD 5; the minimum order size varies by pair and was not verified.
Can A Business Use BloFin Or Kraken?
BloFin: Legal-entity accounts exist per the Terms, but Canadian entities are barred as residents of Canada. Kraken: Kraken offers business accounts globally; Canadian availability is not verified.
