What Happens To Your Money If BloFin Or Bitcoin Well Fails?

BloFin: BloFin is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB registration, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. CIPF never covers crypto and BloFin is not a member anyway. Because Canada is a Restricted Location, an account opened from Canada through a VPN or false address can be frozen, with funds inside. We could not verify insurance, proof of reserves or cold storage shares. If the exchange fails or is hacked, a Canadian has no regulator to complain to.

Bitcoin Well: Bitcoin Well never holds your coins, so the main exposure is the cash in transit and the quote: you pay by Interac or cash and rely on the company to send the bitcoin to your wallet. It is a FINTRAC-registered MSB only, with no CSA registration, no CIRO membership and no CIPF, and the terms mention no insurance. A wrong wallet address or a scam is your loss. The FINTRAC registration shown expires 2026-10-08, so confirm the renewal before relying on it.

How Are BloFin And Bitcoin Well Treated For Tax In Canada?

BloFin: Spot sales, crypto-to-crypto trades and futures settlement are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export or CRA-ready report was verified, so Canadians would have to rebuild records from trade history.

Bitcoin Well: Each sell, bitcoin-funded bill payment or Lightning payment is a disposition, and each buy sets your cost base. Export your history as CSV by date range and load it into Koinly or another tax tool; there is no CRA-ready report.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, BloFin Or Bitcoin Well?

Choose BloFin If

  • You want a regulated route: pick a CSA-registered platform instead, BloFin does not serve Canadians.
  • You wanted perpetual swaps: BloFin is not an option from Canada, so check a registered dealer's derivatives offer.

Choose Bitcoin Well If

  • You want bitcoin sent straight to your own wallet, on-chain or over Lightning, at a low published spread.
  • You want to buy with cash at an ATM or without a full bank-linked account.
  • You want to pay Canadian bills with bitcoin.
  • You trade above CAD 50,000 and want a private desk.

Is BloFin Or Bitcoin Well Better For Canadians In 2026?

Bitcoin Well, and it is not a close race. BloFin scores 9.6 and sits second in my table, but its Terms of Use list Canada as a Restricted Location, it has no CAD route, it is not on the CSA list and I found no FINTRAC match. Bitcoin Well ranks tenth at 6.4, yet it is a Canadian company, founded in 2013 and listed on the TSX Venture Exchange on July 30, 2021 (BTCW), with a FINTRAC MSB registration.

The scores hide the real difference. BloFin is a place to trade perpetual swaps and spot with crypto you already own. Bitcoin Well is a way to turn cash or an Interac payment into bitcoin in your own wallet. A Canadian can use only one of them.

See my BloFin review and my Bitcoin Well review for more.

Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?

BloFin's spot fee is 0.1% for makers and takers, or $1 on $1,000, with no platform withdrawal fee beyond the network fee. Bitcoin Well charges a spread rather than a fee: 1.5% to buy and 2.0% to sell through the portal by Interac, so $15 in and $20 out on $1,000. The Lite account costs 4.0% both ways, and ATM and OTC trades are priced separately, with the ATM price shown at the machine.

A Bitcoin Well round trip of $1,000 costs about $35. BloFin's would be about $2, but BloFin is crypto-funded only, and fiat goes through third-party providers that Canadians cannot use. The low fee cannot be reached from a Canadian bank account.

Which Is Easier To Fund And Cash Out?

Bitcoin Well takes Interac e-Transfer through the portal with no separate fee, or cash at an ATM. Interac minimums, maximums and speeds are not on the pages I could read, so I will not quote them. Selling goes to your bank with no withdrawal fee, though the method and speed are unpublished, and delivery of bitcoin on-chain or over Lightning carries no withdrawal fee either. BloFin has no CAD deposit, no Interac and no verified card route, and the 2% to 5% card figure on older pages is unconfirmed. Its crypto withdrawals carry no platform fee, only the network fee.

Which Is Safer For Canadians?

Bitcoin Well never holds your coins. It delivers on-chain or over Lightning to a wallet you control, so there is no custody to lose, and no proof of reserves is needed. Your exposure is the cash in transit and the quote. It is a FINTRAC MSB with no CSA registration, no CIRO membership and no CIPF, and its terms mention no insurance. One point to check: the registration I saw expires on October 8, 2026.

BloFin is an offshore platform for a Canadian: not registered with the CSA, no FINTRAC match, and Terms that restrict Canadian residents. It holds your funds in custody, and I could not verify insurance, proof of reserves or cold storage. If it fails or freezes an account opened from Canada, nobody regulates the outcome.

Do An ATM Network And A Perpetuals Exchange Compete At All?

What Each One Is For
NeedBloFinBitcoin Well
Pay with cashNo160+ ATMs, no account needed

Pay a Canadian billNoYes, with bitcoin on-chain or over Lightning
Usable by a Canadian residentNo, Canada is a Restricted LocationYes, in provinces it serves; ATMs sit in eight provinces

They barely overlap, which is why this comparison has an obvious answer. Bitcoin Well also runs a private service, Bitcoin Well Infinite, for trades from $50,000. BloFin has nothing for a Canadian at any size.

Who Should Choose BloFin And Who Should Choose Bitcoin Well?

Choose Bitcoin Well if you want Bitcoin only, delivered to your own wallet, with Interac or cash and a published spread. It also suits paying bills with bitcoin. Confirm the FINTRAC renewal first.

Choose BloFin if you live outside Canada. A Canadian resident should skip it and look at my ranked list of exchanges instead.
