Bitcoin Well sends bitcoin straight to a wallet you control and will take cash at 160+ ATMs. Robinhood keeps your coins in an account with a CIRO dealer and charges a flat fee that goes up on November 1, 2026. It is a custody decision first and a fee decision second.

Bitcoin Well Vs Robinhood: Which Is Better For Canadians?

For most Canadians, Bitcoin Well is the better choice (it wins on my ranking). Robinhood still comes out ahead on canadian status, published trading fee, coins available. Robinhood is best for former Bitbuy and Coinsquare customers who want a flat, simple fee.

What Do Bitcoin Well And Robinhood Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?

Bitcoin Well Only

  • Bitcoin ATMs: 160+ machines in Canada for cash buys, no account needed; the price is shown before the transaction and is not covered by the portal spread.
  • Recurring buy: Set a recurring Interac e-Transfer; each time it arrives, bitcoin is sent automatically to your own wallet.
  • Bill payment with bitcoin: Add a Canadian payee and send bitcoin on-chain or over Lightning; it is converted to CAD and paid. A permanent per-payee address and a 1% spread with a 0.1 BTC cap were reported by search results and not confirmed on the page.
  • Bitcoin Well Infinite: Private service for trades from CAD 50,000 with an Executive Bitcoin Advisor.

  • OTC desk: USD deposits and large trades go through the OTC desk at launch, with a quoted spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.
  • Coinsquare Trade: Request-for-quote product on the Coinsquare platform with a disclosed spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.

What Happens To Your Money If Bitcoin Well Or Robinhood Fails?

Bitcoin Well: Bitcoin Well never holds your coins, so the main exposure is the cash in transit and the quote: you pay by Interac or cash and rely on the company to send the bitcoin to your wallet. It is a FINTRAC-registered MSB only, with no CSA registration, no CIRO membership and no CIPF, and the terms mention no insurance. A wrong wallet address or a scam is your loss. The FINTRAC registration shown expires 2026-10-08, so confirm the renewal before relying on it.

Robinhood: Robinhood Canada runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO investment dealer, so it is under dealer rules and CIRO supervision. CIPF covers CAD balances within limits but never crypto. Customer crypto stays in CCML's custody arrangement with crime insurance of an unpublished amount, and no proof of reserves was found. If the firm failed or was hacked, uninsured crypto would be an unsecured claim. The platform is in a migration, so features such as limit orders and swaps are still missing.

How Are Bitcoin Well And Robinhood Treated For Tax In Canada?

Bitcoin Well: Each sell, bitcoin-funded bill payment or Lightning payment is a disposition, and each buy sets your cost base. Export your history as CSV by date range and load it into Koinly or another tax tool; there is no CRA-ready report.

Robinhood: Buying with CAD is not a disposition. Selling for CAD is, and so is any later swap or spend. Robinhood gives statements and annual tax documents for past Bitbuy and Coinsquare activity; CSV and CRA-ready exports were not verified.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, Bitcoin Well Or Robinhood?

Choose Bitcoin Well If

  • You want bitcoin sent straight to your own wallet, on-chain or over Lightning, at a low published spread.
  • You want to buy with cash at an ATM or without a full bank-linked account.
  • You want to pay Canadian bills with bitcoin.
  • You trade above CAD 50,000 and want a private desk.

Choose Robinhood If

  • You want one flat percentage fee and no Robinhood spread (0.50% to Oct 31, 2026, then 0.95%)
  • You are a former Bitbuy or Coinsquare customer moving to the new app
  • You are fine with market orders only for now

Is Bitcoin Well Or Robinhood Better For Canadians In 2026?

It depends on what you want to hold. If bitcoin in your own wallet is the goal, Bitcoin Well, which is at 6.4 and rank 10 on my list. If you want a regulated dealer account with 50+ coins and CAD held under CIPF within limits, Robinhood.

Neither answer is wrong. Both are Canadian, both take Interac e-Transfer, and neither is a bank. See my Bitcoin Well review and Robinhood review.

Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?

Robinhood wins on the numbers for now. A CAD 1,000 buy costs CAD 5.00 through October 31, 2026, and CAD 9.50 from November 1. Bitcoin Well's verified Interac buy spread is 1.5%, or CAD 15.00, and the sell spread is 2.0%, or CAD 20.00. Round trip on CAD 1,000, you pay roughly CAD 35 at Bitcoin Well against CAD 10 at Robinhood today and about CAD 19 after the rise.

Two cautions. Robinhood says slippage within 1% on buys and 5% on sells passes to the client. And Bitcoin Well's Lite account, which is cash vouchers, carries a 4.0% spread both ways.

Does Robinhood's November Increase Close The Gap?

Partly. At 0.95% Robinhood is still cheaper than Bitcoin Well's 1.5% buy. Where Bitcoin Well gives you something different is the delivery: no account balance, no withdrawal fee, and bitcoin sent to your wallet on-chain or over Lightning.

If you plan to buy bitcoin and withdraw it every time, the cost of holding an exchange account is time and friction. If you hold on the exchange, the cost is custody risk. Put a number on that before you decide.

Which Is Safer For Canadians?

Robinhood runs on a CIRO investment dealer, so rules, supervision and CIPF on CAD balances apply. Crypto is not covered, and the insurance amount is not published. Bitcoin Well never holds your coins, but it is a FINTRAC MSB with no CSA registration, no CIRO membership and no CIPF.

A date to watch: Bitcoin Well's FINTRAC registration shown on my last check expires on October 8, 2026, and I had not yet seen the renewal. Confirm it before sending a large amount.

Who Should Choose Bitcoin Well And Who Should Choose Robinhood?

Choose Bitcoin Well for cash buys, Lightning delivery, bill payment or an Infinite desk above CAD 50,000. See the Bitcoin Well sign-up page. Choose Robinhood for the lowest published fee and more coins, especially if you came from Bitbuy or Coinsquare. Robinhood has no sign-up link from me. See also the best crypto exchanges in Canada.

What Do The Limits Look Like?

Bitcoin Well's Lite cash vouchers cap at CAD 4,950 a day, and the Infinite desk starts at CAD 50,000. Interac minimums and maximums are not published. Robinhood's net purchase limits over a rolling 12 months are CAD 5,000 for a Basic investor, CAD 30,000 for Retail and CAD 100,000 for Eligible, with BTC exempt as one of the major coins.

So for bitcoin alone, Robinhood's cap does not bite. It would for an altcoin buyer.

Which Is Easier To Use?

Bitcoin Well's web portal is the main product, and no Apple Canada or Google Play rating for an app was found on October 1, 2026. Robinhood's iOS app was 2.90 from only 97 ratings on October 3, 2026. Neither number makes an easy winner.

The practical difference is that Bitcoin Well asks you to bring a wallet and Robinhood does not. If you are new, that step is the actual hurdle.
