CoinGate has long been one of the places to spend your Bitcoin and other crypto assets on gift cards, including brands like Amazon, Walmart, UberEats and Esso. You can browse categories such as e-commerce, gaming, travel, entertainment and restaurants. One thing to know: CoinGate now describes itself first as a licensed crypto payment gateway for businesses, and its site says gift cards are sold by a separate company, Rewards Distributed UAB, which is not a regulated financial services provider. I could not confirm from its pages which gift cards are available to Canadians today, so check the Canada catalogue before you send any crypto. The range of accepted coins used to be wide, with the site listing a long set of altcoins. The current list is on its supported currencies page.
Travala
If you are planning to travel and looking for ways to spend Bitcoin or other cryptos, then Travala could be a great option for you. Travala is a travel website built around paying with crypto. I personally use them every time I am going on a trip.
Travala says every accommodation and activity booking earns a 2% giveback in AVA tokens, credited to your wallet after your stay, once you activate a free Smart Basic account. It lists more than 2.2 million properties along with flights, car rentals and activities, accepts 100+ payment options including BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, ADA, DOGE and stablecoins, and promises a best price guarantee. The old "up to 40% back" figure I used to quote is not what the site states now, so do not plan around it. Paying with crypto is still a disposition for tax, even when the booking is for a hotel.
SilverGoldBull
SilverGoldBull is an online Canadian store where you can buy silver, gold, and platinum coins and bars, and it accepts bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies at checkout through BitPay. A search of its Canadian payment page shows a cash discount of 3% for paying with crypto, with about two business days of clearing time, but the page itself blocked my fetch, so confirm the current discount at checkout. I used to quote 4%, and I could not verify that. For large orders, ask the store about its process before you pay.
Newegg
Newegg is an online retailer with thousands of products in gaming, technology, software, electronics, and more. Select the products you'd like to purchase and they will be shipped directly to your door. Newegg's Canadian knowledge base says it has been accepting digital currencies since 2014 and lists BitPay as a payment method on Newegg.ca. Coins supported through BitPay include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, Dai, Tether and USDC. The restrictions matter: BitPay cannot be used for Newegg digital gift cards, marketplace items, subscription orders, pre-orders or orders placed in the mobile app.
Coincards
Coincards is a long-running way to spend Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The site says you can use Bitcoin for digital gift cards, mobile top-ups and prepaid vouchers across 20+ countries, and it lists a dedicated Canadian shop. Gift cards cover brands such as Amazon, Air Canada and Best Buy. I used to describe prepaid Visa and Mastercard options at $25 to $250 mailed to your door, and I could not confirm those prepaid cards are still on offer, so look at the current catalogue.
Coincards accepts Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Monero, USDC, USDT, Dash and Polygon (MATIC), among others.
Bylls
You can pay bills in Canada with Bylls. Bylls is a solution for anyone looking to pay their bills with Bitcoin: you send Bitcoin and they send fiat to the company you wish to pay, using the account and invoice numbers you add. Bylls now redirects to Bull Bitcoin. Bull Bitcoin's own site describes selling Bitcoin to any bill payment invoice, and says Bylls is its sister site for paying bills with Bitcoin. I used to quote more than 9,000 billers, and I could not verify that figure, so I will not repeat it. Bull Bitcoin is FINTRAC MSB registered and is number 5 on my exchange scorecard at 8.0 out of 10. Bitrefill
Bitrefill is a convenient way to spend bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in Canada. Its Canadian catalogue includes Amazon.ca, Uber Eats and DoorDash, and its prepaid phone section lists top-ups for networks like Koodo, Freedom, Public Mobile, Virgin and Lucky Mobile. Using Bitrefill is simple: choose the amount, pay with crypto, then receive your voucher. Back when I first wrote this you did not need an account. The site now prompts you to log in and complete required fields before payment, so plan on creating one.
Bitrefill says you can pay with Bitcoin, Lightning, Ethereum, USDC, USDT, Binance Pay, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Solana or Dash and more. It is run by Airfill Prepaid AB of Stockholm, so it is international, which makes it handy when you are travelling or sending gifts abroad.
Charity And Donations
There are various charities accepting bitcoin in Canada. Crypto Giving is a directory worth checking, though its page would not load for me, so confirm details with the charity directly. Donating to a charity can have benefits for the charity that it wouldn't get with cash donations: when the market goes up, your donation will increase in value for the charity. Ask the charity whether it issues tax receipts for crypto gifts. The CRA lists gifts and donations as a transaction type you report, so assume you may have a capital gain on the coins you give.

- Send from a wallet or exchange you control. Pay the exact amount to the address or invoice shown, and allow for the network fee.
- Keep the record. Each payment is a disposition, so note the date, the CAD value and your cost base for your tax return.
Do You Pay Tax When You Spend Bitcoin In Canada?
Yes, possibly. The CRA's guide lists barter transactions, selling and trading as transactions you report, and spending crypto on goods is treated as disposing of it. Take my example: you buy 0.0017 BTC for $100. The next day you use it to pay for something and it is now worth $110. That extra $10 is a capital gain. Under the 50% inclusion rate on the CRA's capital gains page, half of that gain, $5, is added to your income. If it was worth $95, you have a $5 capital loss, which you can only use against capital gains.
