You can pay rent and bills with Bitcoin in Canada, but the recipient still gets Canadian dollars. The practical routes are a bill payment service such as Bull Bitcoin, which pays more than 14,000 standard Canadian billers from a Bitcoin payment, a rental platform such as liv.rent that accepts Bitcoin and charges a 0.5% processing fee, or selling on an exchange and paying from your bank. Mortgages are different: I know of no Canadian lender that accepts mortgage payments in Bitcoin.
Whichever route you pick, spending crypto counts as selling it for tax, so the CRA expects a capital gain or loss calculation on every payment.
- Bills and rent without a wallet to sell from: Bull Bitcoin (9.4/10), no processing fee, CAD 25 minimum
- Rent on a participating platform: liv.rent, 0.5% processing fee
- Sell first, pay normally: NDAX (8.8/10) has the lowest published fee at a flat 0.20%
| Route | How It Works | Published Cost | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bull Bitcoin bill payment | Send Bitcoin to an invoice for the CAD amount. When it confirms, Bull pays the biller, bank account, email recipient or credit card | No processing fee, spread built in; minimum CAD 25; 3 to 4 business days for bill payments | Spread is the real cost, about 2% on the live quote of October 1, 2026 |
| liv.rent | Tenant picks Bitcoin on the payment request and pays through Coinbase or an external wallet; landlord receives Canadian dollars | 0.5% processing fee on the rent, per liv.rent; network fees apply | Both tenant and landlord need to be on the platform |
| Sell on an exchange, pay from the bank | Sell Bitcoin for CAD, withdraw by Interac e-Transfer, pay as usual | NDAX 0.20% plus CAD 1.50 e-Transfer withdrawal; Kraken Pro 0.80% taker plus CAD 10 withdrawal | Two steps and a wait for the bank deposit |
| Crypto debit or credit card | Spend from a card that converts at the till | Depends on the card | I cover options in my crypto Visa cards FAQ |
How Do You Pay Bills With Crypto In Canada?
- Decide how much you need in Canadian dollars. Bill payment services work from a CAD amount and show you the Bitcoin to send.
- Pick the route. For billers, utilities and credit cards, a bill payment service such as Bull Bitcoin is built for it. For rent, check whether your landlord is on a platform such as liv.rent. Otherwise sell and pay by e-Transfer.
- Create the payment. At Bull Bitcoin, you enter the biller or bank details and get a Bitcoin invoice. Check the minimum, which is CAD 25.
- Send the Bitcoin and wait for confirmation. The bill payment starts when the Bitcoin transaction confirms. Allow 3 to 4 business days for bill payments, since the biller needs time to receive it.
- Keep the receipt. You need the date, the Bitcoin amount and the CAD value to work out your gain or loss.
How Much Does It Cost To Pay $1,500 Rent With Bitcoin?
| Route | Calculation | Published Fee |
|---|---|---|
| liv.rent | 0.5% of $1,500 | $7.50 |
| NDAX, sell then e-Transfer out | 0.20% of $1,500 plus CAD 1.50 | $4.50 plus spread |
| Kraken Pro, sell then e-Transfer out | 0.80% taker on $1,500 plus CAD 10 | $22.00 plus spread |
| Bull Bitcoin bill payment | No processing fee, spread about 2% | About $30 as spread |
This is arithmetic on published schedules, not a quote. A "no fee" route can cost more than a flat-fee route, because the spread is the price. NDAX does not publish its spread, so check the sell preview. Bitcoin network fees also come out of the transfer.
Can You Pay Rent With Bitcoin In Canada?
Yes, if your landlord uses a platform that supports it. The Canadian rental platform liv.rent lets tenants choose Bitcoin on a payment request, pay through Coinbase or an external wallet, and the landlord receives Canadian dollars. liv.rent says it takes about 30 minutes to verify and that a payment can show as pending for four to six days before it finalises. Its own page was published in June 2021 and updated in August 2023, so confirm the current terms. Without a platform like that, the clean option is to sell first and pay your landlord normally, which also leaves a clear record for your lease file.
My news piece on this is Canadians Can Now Pay Their Rent Using Bitcoin, and the broader guide to spending is how to spend Bitcoin in Canada.
Can You Pay A Mortgage With Bitcoin In Canada?
Not directly. I found no Canadian lender that accepts mortgage payments in Bitcoin. What does work is converting crypto to Canadian dollars and paying normally, or borrowing against it with a crypto-backed loan. For a down payment, Canadian Mortgage Trends reported on August 17, 2025 that you can use crypto if you convert it and keep a documented paper trail, and advised letting the money season for at least 90 days. My Do Bitcoin Mortgages Exist? answer covers that route, and my Ledn review covers the loan side.
Do I Pay Tax When I Pay Bills With Crypto?
Yes. The CRA says using crypto to buy goods or services is a disposition, and the proceeds are the fair market value in Canadian dollars at that moment. Suppose you bought Bitcoin for $600 and paid a $1,000 bill with it. Your gain is $400, and half of a capital gain is included in income under the CRA's current rules, so $200 would be taxable. If the Bitcoin is worth less than you paid, you have a capital loss. Do this for each payment, and keep records for six years. My crypto taxation guide explains the method, and how to claim crypto losses covers the loss side.
Is It Worth Paying Bills With Bitcoin?
For most people, no, not as a habit. Every payment is a taxable sale, the spread costs more than a normal bank payment, and a large bill can move with the Bitcoin price between the day you plan and the day you pay. Where it makes sense: you hold Bitcoin you were going to sell anyway, you need a Canadian-dollar bill paid, and the route saves you a step. If you are buying Bitcoin to spend it, buy and pay close together, and compare platforms in my Interac e-Transfer buying guide.
What Changed For Paying Bills With Crypto In October 2026?
- Canadian Mortgage Trends reported that crypto can fund a down payment if converted to Canadian dollars with a documented paper trail.
- The CRA page on reporting income from crypto-asset transactions, dated this day, still treats spending crypto as a disposition.
- Wealthsimple updated its crypto fee schedule, relevant if you sell there first.
- Kraken republished its fee schedule with Pro spot fees from 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
