MetaMask, Trust Wallet And Phantom In Canada: Buying And Holding With CAD

MetaMask, Trust Wallet and Phantom are wallets, not exchanges, so you do not buy crypto with Canadian dollars inside them as a rule. The reliable way is to buy on a registered Canadian exchange with Interac e-Transfer, then withdraw to your wallet address. Coinbase and Kraken are first in my ranking and both list Ether and Solana, according to my listings checks. Check the network and the address, send a small test, then send the rest.

You hold the keys in these wallets. That means no company can reset your password, and a lost recovery phrase is a lost balance.

  • Ether for MetaMask or Trust Wallet: Coinbase (9.9/10) or Kraken (9.6/10)
  • Solana for Phantom: Coinbase, Kraken, Newton or NDAX
  • Never do: type your recovery phrase into any website or share it with anyone, including support staff

How Do You Buy Crypto In Canada For MetaMask, Trust Wallet Or Phantom?

  1. Buy on a registered exchange. Fund it with Interac e-Transfer, which is free at the platforms in my ranking that accept it. My Interac e-Transfer buying guide compares limits and fees.
  2. Copy your wallet's receiving address. Open the wallet, choose Receive, and pick the right network. A Solana address is not an Ethereum address, and sending to the wrong network can lose the coins.
  3. Withdraw a small test amount first. On the exchange, choose Withdraw, paste the address and confirm the network. Wait until it arrives.
  4. Send the rest. Network fees apply on the exchange side and are shown before you confirm.
  5. Back up the recovery phrase offline. Write it on paper. Do not photograph it or keep it in cloud notes.

Coinbase and Crypto.com publish one global coin list, not a Canadian one. Check the coin in their Canadian app before you fund an account.

This table is generated from my listings checks. For Ether, my buy Ethereum in Canada guide goes into more detail. On Solana, the exchanges that list it in my files are Coinbase, BloFin, Kraken, Newton, NDAX, BTCC, MEXC, Bitunix and Crypto.com, and the same registered-versus-offshore labels apply as in the table above. My buy Solana guide has more.

Can I Buy Crypto Directly Inside MetaMask Or Phantom From Canada?

Many wallets show a Buy button powered by third-party payment providers, and the providers available change by country and over time. I do not rely on those buttons as my recommended route. Fees and rates inside them are set by the provider, and you cannot compare them against a registered exchange's published schedule in one place. If you try one, compare the all-in cost against the exchange routes in the table before you confirm.

Can I Send Crypto From Trust Wallet To Shakepay Or Coinsquare To MetaMask?

Trust Wallet to Shakepay works only for the coins Shakepay supports. Its official page lists Bitcoin and Ether (USDC deposits convert to USD), so a Solana token sent there is not supported. Send the correct coin on the correct network to the address Shakepay gives you, with a test first. Coinsquare to MetaMask is possible for existing customers: Coinsquare lets users withdraw to external wallets, but Robinhood closed its WonderFi purchase on June 1, 2026 and customers are being moved to the Robinhood app, so move coins before your migration invitation if you want them in your own wallet. See my Coinsquare review for the status.

How Do I Keep A Software Wallet Safe?

Treat it like cash in your pocket. Keep only what you are willing to lose on a phone or browser wallet, and put larger holdings on a hardware wallet. My best crypto wallets for Canadians comparison covers hardware options, and my Exodus review covers another software option. Scams are a common way people lose wallet funds: fake support, fake apps and malicious approvals. My common crypto scams guide shows the patterns.

Do I Pay Tax When I Move Crypto To My Own Wallet?

Moving coins between your own wallets or from an exchange to your own wallet is not a taxable disposition under CRA's guidance. But swapping one coin for another inside a wallet is. A swap in MetaMask or Phantom is a crypto-to-crypto exchange, valued at the Canadian-dollar fair market value on the day. Keep the wallet addresses and the transaction records, because the CRA says records should include them, and keep them for six years. My crypto taxation guide covers the rest.

What Changed For Buying And Holding Crypto With CAD In October 2026?

  • Robinhood closed its WonderFi purchase, so Coinsquare and Bitbuy customers are being moved to the Robinhood app.
  • Wealthsimple updated its crypto fee schedule to 0.5% flat plus spread, with Active Trader tiers down to 0%.
  • Kraken republished its fee schedule, with Pro spot fees from 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
