Our top pick for Canadians: CoinbaseSign Up

To buy Stellar (XLM) in Canada, sign up to a CSA-registered exchange that lists it, verify your ID, add Canadian dollars and buy. On my list, Coinbase (9.8), Kraken (9.2) and Newton (7.9) carry XLM and are registered with Canadian regulators. BloFin, MEXC and Bitunix also list it, but they are offshore and not for Canadian residents to rely on.

  1. Coinbase, 9.8: first-time buyers who want a regulated, simple app
  2. BloFin, 9.6: offshore, terms restrict Canadians
  3. Kraken, 9.2: beginners who want to learn, then cheaper trading on Kraken Pro

I've been trading crypto in Canada since 2016 and have tested 61 exchanges to find the best ways for Canadians to buy XLM. With my YouTube channel, OCryptoCanada, and thousands of subscribers along for the ride, I know which platforms work best for us. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned trader, this guide should help you make a sharp, informed decision.

Coinbase and Crypto.com publish one global coin list, not a Canadian one. Check the coin in their Canadian app before you fund an account.

Listings are checked against each exchange's public asset feed as of October 2026. The Coinbase and Crypto.com feeds are global rather than Canada-filtered, so confirm that XLM shows up in your Canadian app before you deposit anything. Wealthsimple Crypto publishes no machine-readable coin list, so I do not claim it carries XLM. Bitbuy and Coinsquare are left out because new accounts are being folded into Robinhood.

Which Exchange Should You Use For XLM?

  • Coinbase (9.8 out of 10) CSA-registered First-time buyers who want a regulated, simple app. Interac e-Transfer and EFT are free to add cash. Simple buys cost up to 1.875% plus the spread, about $9.38 on $500.
  • BloFin (9.6 out of 10) Offshore Experienced traders after low fees on altcoins and futures. It has no CAD funding. Spot fees are 0.1% each way ($0.50 on $500 at the base tier). BloFin's Terms of Use name Canada as a Restricted Location.
  • Kraken (9.2 out of 10) CSA-registered Beginners who want to learn, then cheaper trading on Kraken Pro. Interac e-Transfer deposits are free. Kraken Pro charges 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker (the taker fee is $4.00 on $500), and Instant Buy is 1% ($5.00 on $500).
  • Newton (7.9 out of 10) CSA-registered Beginners who want a Canadian-regulated dealer with free CAD funding. Interac e-Transfer, wire and EFT are free. There is no trading fee; the cost is a spread that starts at 1.00% on BTC and differs by coin, so read the quote on the order screen.
  • NDAX (7.8 out of 10) CSA-registered Low flat fees and cheap cash-outs to your bank. Interac e-Transfer and wire are free. The flat fee is 0.20% ($1.00 on $500), plus a spread that NDAX does not publish.
  • MEXC (7.0 out of 10) Offshore Experienced traders hunting small-cap altcoins. No CAD funding verified. Maker is 0% and taker 0.05% ($0.25 on $500) at the base tier. MEXC's User Agreement names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction.
  • Bitunix (not scored) Offshore Experienced traders after low-fee altcoin trading. It has no CAD funding. Spot maker is 0.08% ($0.40 on $500) and taker 0.10% ($0.50) at the base tier. Bitunix's Restricted Regions notice names Canada as a Prohibited Jurisdiction.
  • Crypto.com (not scored) CSA-registered A broad app with a crypto card. CAD funding methods are not something I could verify, so check inside your account. Crypto.com does not publish a Canada fee schedule that I could verify, so the in-app quote is the only reliable number.

Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and the terms of service of BloFin, MEXC and Bitunix restrict or exclude Canadian residents. No Canadian investor protection applies. They suit experienced traders who accept that risk, not first-time buyers.

Why Buy Stellar (XLM)?

Stellar (XLM) isn't just another cryptocurrency. It's a speedy network built for low-cost, cross-border payments and connecting financial systems. Canadians might dig it for its potential to send money fast and cheap, whether you're in Ottawa or out in the Maritimes. Just a heads-up, though: crypto investments are risky, so always keep an eye on the ups and downs before you dive in.

Disclaimer: Our website uses referral links to the crypto exchanges mentioned in the article as a means of monetization. This supports our efforts to provide high-quality, independently researched content for Canadians. We appreciate it if you choose to use the in-article links, but the decision is ultimately yours.

What Is Stellar (XLM) And How Does It Work?

Stellar's developer documentation calls accounts the central data structure of the network: they hold balances, sign transactions and issue assets.

An account needs a valid keypair and a minimum XLM balance to exist. One base reserve currently equals 0.5 XLM, and every trustline, offer or signer an account holds adds one more base reserve to its minimum balance.

The lumen is the only token on Stellar that does not require an issuer or a trustline. One hundred billion lumens were created at launch, and there is no mining.

Network inflation of 1% a year ran for roughly five years and ended by validator vote in October 2019. About 55.4 billion lumens were later burned by sending them to addresses with no signers, and Stellar's docs put the current supply at about 50 billion as of July 2026.

What Is Stellar (XLM) Used For?

XLM, called lumens, is the native currency and the reserve currency behind every account operation and fee. To receive any asset other than XLM, an account must first open a trustline to it.

Transactions can carry memos for context or reference, which matters when you deposit to an exchange that asks for one.

Every transaction pays a lumen fee, which exists to prevent ledger spam and to prioritize transactions during surge pricing. Accounts must hold at least 1 XLM, which is two base reserves, and each additional subentry such as a trustline needs another 0.5 XLM.

Stellar operations cover account creation, payments (including path payments where the asset sent differs from the asset received), trustlines, trading offers, claimable balances and Soroban smart contract calls. Sponsored reserves let one account cover another's minimum balance.

What Are The Risks Of Buying Stellar (XLM)?

Because accounts need a minimum balance, a first deposit that is too small can fail to create the account. Opening trustlines to unknown assets also locks up reserve XLM, so only trust issuers you recognise.

Issuers on Stellar have clawback and trustline flag operations that let them revoke or restrict the assets they issue. That applies to issued tokens, not to lumens, but it is a good reason to know who issued an asset before you hold it.

Which Wallets Work With Stellar (XLM)?

LOBSTR is a wallet for Stellar and the XRP Ledger with iOS, Android, Chrome extension and web versions, 2FA, PIN and multisig options. It says it is operated independently of the Stellar Development Foundation.

How Do You Receive XLM Step By Step?

  1. Create the wallet and write down the recovery phrase. Keep it offline.
  2. Fund it with at least 1 XLM. Stellar accounts must hold a minimum of two base reserves, so a first deposit that is too small can fail to create the account.
  3. Open trustlines only for assets you want. A trustline is required to receive any asset except lumens, and each one adds 0.5 XLM to your minimum balance.
  4. Check the memo field. Sending to an exchange often needs one, and leaving it out can delay the credit.
  5. Send a small test amount first, then the rest.

What Is A Trustline And Do You Need One?

A trustline is an explicit opt-in that lets your account hold an asset issued by someone else. You do not need one for XLM itself, because lumens are the only token on Stellar that requires no issuer or trustline. You do need one for anything else you want to hold, such as a stablecoin issued on Stellar. The reserve cost is small, but it adds up if you collect many.

What Are Claimable Balances And Sponsored Reserves?

Claimable balances are escrow-like entries where funds wait until designated claimants meet specific conditions. Sponsored reserves let one account pay the minimum XLM another account needs, which wallets and apps use to onboard new users without asking them to buy XLM first. Neither is something a first-time buyer needs, but you may see both mentioned in Stellar apps.

How Much Does It Cost To Buy $500 Of Stellar (XLM) In Canada?

What A $500 XLM Buy Costs, Platform By Platform
PlatformPublished Cost
CoinbaseSimple buys cost up to 1.875% plus the spread, about $9.38 on $500.
BloFinSpot fees are 0.1% each way ($0.50 on $500 at the base tier).
KrakenKraken Pro charges 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker (the taker fee is $4.00 on $500), and Instant Buy is 1% ($5.00 on $500).
NewtonThere is no trading fee; the cost is a spread that starts at 1.00% on BTC and differs by coin, so read the quote on the order screen.
NDAXThe flat fee is 0.20% ($1.00 on $500), plus a spread that NDAX does not publish.
MEXCMaker is 0% and taker 0.05% ($0.25 on $500) at the base tier.
BitunixSpot maker is 0.08% ($0.40 on $500) and taker 0.10% ($0.50) at the base tier.
Crypto.comCrypto.com does not publish a Canada fee schedule that I could verify, so the in-app quote is the only reliable number.

The spread is the gap between the price you see and the price you get, and it never appears as a line item. Compare the final quote on the order screen, not the headline fee. Offshore platforms show lower headline fees, but they cannot take Canadian dollars and their terms restrict Canadians.

How Do You Buy Stellar (XLM) In Canada Step By Step?

  1. Sign up to Coinbase. Use the Coinbase link and create an account. Coinbase is a CSA Restricted Dealer.
  2. Verify your identity. Upload a government-issued ID and a selfie. Verification can take up to 24 hours.
  3. Add Canadian dollars. Interac e-Transfer and EFT are free to add cash. Cards are quicker but usually cost more.
  4. Buy XLM. Search for XLM, confirm it appears in your Canadian app, then read the fee preview before you confirm.
  5. Move long-term holdings to your own wallet. Send a small test amount first.

How Do You Move Stellar (XLM) From An Exchange To A Wallet?

  1. Pick a wallet that supports XLM. Check the wallet vendor's own supported-asset page, not a forum post.
  2. Match the network. The same ticker can exist on more than one network, and the deposit address must be on the network you withdraw from. A mismatch can mean lost funds.
  3. Check for a memo or tag. Some networks need one when you deposit to an exchange. Wallets you control usually do not, but read the withdrawal screen.
  4. Copy the address from the wallet, never from a message. Paste it, then compare the first and last characters.
  5. Send a small test amount. Once it arrives, send the rest.
  6. Back up the seed phrase offline. Anyone who has it controls the coins, and nobody can reset it for you.

How Do You Store Stellar (XLM)?

For short-term trading, keeping XLM on Coinbase or Kraken is fine if the platform is registered and has decent security. For long-term holding, transfer it to a secure crypto wallet. Exchanges can get hacked, which is why holdings you do not plan to trade belong in your own wallet. My best wallets for Canadians guide has the picks. A hardware wallet such as Ledger is the safest route, and a software wallet works too, as long as you confirm it supports XLM and the right network before you send anything. Write the seed phrase down and keep it offline, never on your phone.

How Do You Sell Stellar (XLM) In Canada?

Ready to cash out? Move your XLM back to your exchange wallet first. On Coinbase, find XLM, hit Sell and convert to CAD, then withdraw to your bank. Then withdraw via e-Transfer or wire. NDAX charges CAD 1.50 for an Interac withdrawal. My guide on how to sell or cash out crypto in Canada has the full steps, and every swap can be a taxable event.

Do You Pay Tax When You Buy Stellar (XLM) In Canada?

Buying XLM with Canadian dollars is not itself a taxable event. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it can be. The CRA says that, depending on your activities, you may realize business income (or loss) or a capital gain (or loss), and the two are reported differently. Record the date and CAD value of every buy, sale and swap. See my crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes.

What Changed For Buying Stellar (XLM) In Canada In October 2026?

  • Kraken republished its fee schedule, with Pro spot starting at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
  • Coinbase launched regulated crypto derivatives for eligible Canadian investors. It is not open to ordinary retail accounts.
  • Robinhood closed its WonderFi acquisition, and Coinsquare customers are being moved in phases to the Robinhood app, so Coinsquare and Bitbuy are no longer places to open a new account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Buy Stellar (XLM) In Canada?

Yes, on some platforms. Coinbase, BloFin, Kraken, Newton, NDAX, MEXC, Bitunix and Crypto.com list XLM in their public asset feeds. Only the CSA-registered ones are places I would use; offshore ones restrict Canadians.

What Is The Best Place To Buy Stellar (XLM) In Canada?

Use a CSA-registered exchange and pay by Interac e-Transfer where you can. For XLM the first registered option on my scorecard is Coinbase.

How Much Does It Cost To Buy Stellar (XLM) In Canada?

The price moves constantly, so any number printed here would be stale. Check the live CAD quote on the exchange you plan to use. Fees run from a flat 0.20% on NDAX to up to 1.875% on a simple Coinbase buy, plus the spread, so compare the final quote on the order screen.

Is Stellar (XLM) A Good Investment For Canadians?

XLM's cheap cross-border payments pitch is clear, but crypto investments are risky. Any crypto investment is risky, so only put in what you are okay losing and do your own research.

How Do You Store Stellar (XLM)?

Short term, a registered exchange is fine. For long-term holding, move it to your own wallet, check the wallet supports XLM and its network, and keep the seed phrase offline.

Do You Pay Tax On Stellar (XLM) In Canada?

Buying with Canadian dollars is not a taxable event. Selling, swapping or spending can be, as business income or a capital gain. Keep the date and CAD value of every transaction.

Is There A Minimum Balance For A Stellar Account?

Yes. A Stellar account must hold at least 1 XLM, which is two base reserves of 0.5 XLM each, and every trustline, offer or signer adds another 0.5 XLM. A first deposit smaller than the minimum can fail to create the account, so fund a new wallet with a little more than 1 XLM.

Do I Need A Memo To Deposit XLM To An Exchange?

Exchanges often ask for one. A memo is extra context attached to a Stellar payment, and an exchange that uses shared deposit addresses uses it to credit your account. Check the deposit screen, include the memo exactly, and send a small test first. Wallets you control usually do not need one.

Does Stellar Have A Fixed Supply Of Lumens?

Not exactly. One hundred billion lumens were created at launch. Inflation of 1% a year ran for about five years and ended by validator vote in October 2019, and around 55.4 billion lumens were later burned by sending them to addresses with no signers. Stellar's docs put the current supply at about 50 billion as of July 2026.

What Are Lumens Used For On Stellar?

Lumens pay transaction fees, which exist to prevent ledger spam and to prioritize transactions when the network is busy, and they back every account through the minimum balance. They are also the only Stellar token you can hold without a trustline.

Can An Issuer Take Back Assets On Stellar?

Stellar's operations include clawback and trustline flag controls that let an issuer revoke or restrict the assets it has issued. Lumens are not issued by anyone, so those controls do not apply to XLM itself. They do matter for any other token you hold on Stellar, so find out who issued it and under what terms before you open a trustline. Reading the issuer's own published policy takes a few minutes and is worth the time.
