Our top pick for Canadians: CoinbaseSign Up

To buy Hedera (HBAR) in Canada, open an account on a CSA-registered exchange that lists it, verify your ID, deposit Canadian dollars and place the order. On my scorecard that means Coinbase (9.8), Kraken (9.2) and Newton (7.9), and 2 more in the table below.

BTCC, MEXC and Bitunix also list it, but they are offshore, so read the labels before you consider them.

  1. Coinbase, 9.8: a large, familiar app with free Interac funding
  2. Kraken, 9.2: free Interac deposits and cheaper trading on Kraken Pro
  3. Newton, 7.9: free CAD funding at a Canadian-regulated dealer

I have been trading crypto in Canada since 2016 and I have tested 61 exchanges to find the best ways for Canadians to buy coins like this one, and I share what I find on my YouTube channel, OCryptoCanada, and in the r/OCryptoCanada community. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned trader, this guide will help you make a smart, informed decision.

Part of my guide to how to buy crypto in Canada.

Why Buy Hedera (HBAR)?

Hedera (HBAR) isn’t just another crypto, it’s the fuel for a super-fast, eco-friendly blockchain that powers everything from payments to enterprise apps. Canadians might be hooked by its low fees and staking perks, perfect whether you’re in Winnipeg or Whistler.

A quick heads-up: crypto investments are risky, so always weigh the ups and downs before jumping in. I am not quoting a live HBAR price here, since it would be out of date within hours. Check the order screen of your platform for the current CAD price, and judge any coin by what it does rather than by a chart. The facts below come from the project's own site, docs or whitepaper, or from the wallet vendor's own support pages.

What Is Hedera, And What Does HBAR Do?

Hedera describes itself as a public, proof-of-stake distributed ledger that uses hashgraph consensus, and it asks that it not be called a blockchain. Hashgraph is a consensus algorithm and data structure built on a gossip protocol, and Hedera states it is asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerant, which holds as long as more than two-thirds of nodes follow the protocol.

HBAR is the network's native cryptocurrency, used to pay transaction fees and access network services. Fees are priced in USD, starting at $0.0001, and converted to HBAR at the time of each transaction. The documented samples are $0.0001 for a CryptoTransfer, $1.00 for TokenCreate and $0.05 for CryptoCreate. One HBAR divides into tinybars of 0.00000001 HBAR each.

Who Controls The Hedera Network?

This is the part I would read before buying. The Hedera Council is the governing body, with equal voting rights and term limits for members. Council members run network nodes and approve technology updates under a permissioned model. Hedera's own site says the council has 31 members across 11 industries, including 16 Fortune 500 companies. Mainnet consensus nodes are permissioned and operated by council members, while mirror nodes that archive history are permissionless.

That is a deliberate trade: you get named, accountable operators, and you give up the open validator set that other networks offer. Whether that is a strength or a weakness depends on what you want from a network.

How Many HBAR Exist, And How Does Staking Work?

Hedera launched with a fixed total supply of 50 billion HBAR, and the council says that cap may not be modified without the unanimous consent of its members. Unreleased HBAR stays under council control in designated accounts and becomes released supply when transferred to user accounts, and the council reports allocations at least quarterly. So the cap is fixed but the pace of release is a council decision.

Staking has no lock-up: the docs say the staked balance is liquid at all times, and rewards are determined by the council. Rewards do not expire, but they can be collected for only up to 365 days without a rewards payment being triggered.

How Do Hedera Accounts, Memos And Token Association Work?

A Hedera mainnet account ID looks like 0.0.1234, and Ledger says an HBAR address always starts with 0.0. Accounts can carry a memo of up to 100 characters that is public and mutable, and the docs warn you not to put private information in it. HashPack advises depositing to exchanges using the Hedera Account ID format, because sending to an EVM-style address meant for another chain can create a Hedera account whose key you do not control, making recovery impossible. It also says to check the memo, if one is required, every time, and that sends are non-reversible.

One more quirk: HashPack states that a token must be associated with an account before it can be received, and that Hedera charges $0.05 for associating a token. That applies to Hedera tokens, not to plain HBAR.

Where Can You Buy Hedera (HBAR) In Canada?

These are the platforms on my scorecard whose asset lists include HBAR, in my fixed ranking order. Wealthsimple is left out because it publishes no coin list I can check, and I will not claim it carries HBAR. Bitbuy and Coinsquare are left out because new accounts are being folded into Robinhood.

It suits offshore futures traders who accept that no Canadian investor protection applies, and I do not recommend it for Canadians.

BTCC lists HBAR, with spot fees of 0.2% maker and 0.3% taker. It is not on the CSA list, and its own help article names Ontario and Quebec as restricted provinces. I could not verify CAD funding. Read my BTCC review.

Buy Hedera (HBAR) On MEXC

Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its terms of service restrict Canadian residents. No Canadian investor protection applies. It attracts people hunting small-cap altcoins, but I do not recommend it for Canadians.

MEXC lists HBAR, with spot fees of 0% maker and 0.05% taker and no verified CAD funding. Its User Agreement, last updated May 29, 2025, names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction. Read my MEXC review.

Buy Hedera (HBAR) On Crypto.com

Crypto.com serves Canadians through Foris DAX CAN ULC, a CSA Restricted Dealer. Its Canadian marketing says maker and taker fees run as low as 0.08% and 0.18%, but I could not retrieve its Canadian fee schedule, so treat that as a best case and read the order preview. Deposits by bank transfer, card or crypto are listed as zero-fee. Read my Crypto.com review.

How Do You Buy Hedera (HBAR) In Canada Step By Step?

  1. Sign up to Coinbase. I use Coinbase here because it is the first CSA-registered platform in the table above that lists HBAR. Download the app or use the website.
  2. Verify your identity. Upload a government-issued ID and a selfie, and sometimes proof of address. Verification can take up to 24 hours, so do it before you plan to buy.
  3. Deposit Canadian dollars. Interac e-Transfer and bank EFT are free for adding cash on Coinbase, and card and PayPal also work for buying, but they usually cost more.
  4. Find HBAR. Search for the name and the ticker and check that both match. Some tickers are shared by unrelated coins, so confirm you picked Hedera.
  5. Place the order. Use a market order for speed or a limit order if you want to name your price. Read the fee preview, because a simple buy can cost up to 1.875% plus the spread.
  6. Move long-term holdings to your own wallet. Check that the wallet supports HBAR and its network, and send a small test transfer first. My best crypto wallets for Canadians list covers the options.

Which Wallets Support Hedera (HBAR), And How Do You Move It There?

Ledger lists HBAR as supported across its current hardware devices, and says you can manage HBAR in the Ledger app or connect a Ledger to the HashPack software wallet. HashPack is a non-custodial wallet for Hedera that supports HBAR and Hedera tokens, with staking and DeFi and NFT access. HashPack's guide for staking HBAR with a Ledger describes that route as a temporary solution for new accounts only, where the node cannot be changed once chosen.

At the exchange, withdraw to your Hedera Account ID, copy the memo field if your wallet or exchange asks for one, and send a small test first.

How Risky Is Hedera (HBAR)?

Any coin outside the top few can fall hard and trade thinly, and HBAR is no exception. Thin trading means a wider gap between the buy and sell price, and that gap is a real cost on a small order. Buy only what you can lose, and decide in advance whether this is a trade or a long-term hold. I do not make price predictions, and nobody else can either.

How Do You Store Hedera (HBAR)?

Keeping your HBAR safe is something you must do if you do not want to risk it being stolen. For safekeeping, use a private crypto wallet. Choose one of the crypto wallets I reviewed, and then send your HBAR from the exchange you used to buy it to your wallet. If you buy any valuable cryptocurrency, always move it to a private wallet to keep it secure. Check that the wallet supports the coin and its network first, because sending to an unsupported address can lose the funds for good. Write your recovery phrase on paper, never store it in a photo or a cloud note, and never share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support.

How Do You Sell Hedera (HBAR) In Canada?

To sell, go to the exchange where you bought it. If your coins are in a wallet, send them back to the exchange first, then click sell. You can swap HBAR for another cryptocurrency, or sell it for Canadian dollars if the exchange offers that, and then withdraw to your bank account. Withdrawal fees and limits differ by platform. My guide on how to sell or cash out crypto in Canada has the full steps.

Do You Pay Tax When You Buy Hedera (HBAR) In Canada?

Buying HBAR with Canadian dollars is not itself a taxable event. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it can be. The CRA says that, depending on your activities, you may realize business income (or loss) or a capital gain (or loss), and the two are reported differently. Record the date and CAD value of every buy, sale and swap. See my crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes.

What Changed For Buying Hedera (HBAR) In Canada In October 2026?

  • Kraken republished its fee schedule, with Pro spot starting at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
  • Coinbase launched regulated crypto derivatives for eligible Canadian investors through Coinbase Financial Markets. It is not a way to buy the coin itself.
  • Newton was admitted to CIRO membership as an investment dealer.
