In Canada you buy an NFT by funding a crypto wallet with Ethereum (or another chain's coin) from a registered exchange, then connecting that wallet to a marketplace such as OpenSea. NFTs are legal to buy, sell and mint. The Canada Revenue Agency treats them like other crypto assets: selling, trading, bartering or gifting one is a reportable transaction, and you may owe GST/HST if you sell regularly. The exchange route is the safe part. The wallet and the marketplace are where people lose money.

  • Step one: buy ETH on a CSA-registered exchange such as Coinbase or Kraken
  • Step two: send it to a self-custody wallet you control
  • Step three: connect the wallet to the marketplace and keep a record of every transaction

How Do You Buy An NFT In Canada?

  1. Open an account on a registered exchange. I rank Coinbase first at 9.9 and Kraken third at 9.6. Both are CSA Restricted Dealers and both carry Ethereum.
  2. Fund it with Canadian dollars. Interac e-Transfer is the usual route. Buy a little more ETH than the NFT costs, because every transaction on Ethereum needs a network fee.
  3. Set up a wallet. A browser or mobile wallet such as MetaMask works with EVM chains. Write the recovery phrase on paper and never type it into a website.
  4. Send ETH from the exchange to your wallet. Send a small test amount first.
  5. Connect to the marketplace. OpenSea lists 28 compatible chains, including Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, Base and Solana. Make sure your coin and your chain match.
  6. Buy, then check the contract. Confirm the collection is the verified one and not a copycat with the same artwork.

I walk through the full process, with screenshots, in my guide to buying NFTs in Canada.

How Do You Sell An NFT In Canada?

List it on the marketplace you bought it on, set the price in the chain's coin, and accept the offer. You receive ETH (or another coin) in your wallet. To turn it into Canadian dollars, send it to an exchange and sell it there, then withdraw by Interac e-Transfer. Each step has a tax meaning. The NFT sale is a disposition, and selling the ETH afterwards is a second one. If the ETH did not move in price, the second one is tiny, but it still goes in your records. My guide to cashing out crypto covers the exchange side.

How Do You Mint An NFT As A Canadian Creator?

Minting means creating the token on a blockchain. On OpenSea you connect a wallet, choose a blockchain, create a collection and mint, paying gas to deploy the contract and mint the token. OpenSea discontinued lazy minting on October 3, 2023, so creators now pay at mint time. For the steps, read how to mint an NFT in Canada. If you plan to sell your art regularly, treat it as a business from day one and keep a ledger.

What Wallet Should You Use For NFTs?

NFTs live on the blockchain, and your wallet holds the key that proves you own them. A hot wallet (an app or browser extension) is convenient for trading. A hardware wallet is the safer place for anything valuable. Both are compared in my best crypto wallets for Canadians. Never keep a high-value NFT in the same wallet you use to click on mints and airdrops.

How Does The CRA Treat NFTs?

The CRA defines an NFT as a unique digital asset recorded on a ledger. Its list of reportable crypto transactions includes selling, trading, bartering and gifting them, and the CRA says you may need to collect GST/HST. For GST/HST purposes, NFTs fall outside the virtual payment instrument category, so they are taxable intangible supplies, and the small supplier threshold is $30,000 averaged over four quarters. The tax rules get their own page: NFT taxes in Canada. For capital gains, see how much crypto tax you pay in Canada.

How Do You Avoid NFT Scams?

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre warns that crypto payments are not protected the way credit card payments are, and that fraudsters pose as support staff, giveaways and fake collections. My rules: never sign a wallet prompt you do not understand, never share your recovery phrase, buy hardware wallets only from the manufacturer, and treat any DM that offers a free mint as a trap. If you are scammed, report to the CAFC at 1-888-495-8501 or online. More in my guide to crypto scams in Canada.

What Does It Cost To Fund An NFT Purchase?

An NFT purchase has three costs: the price, the network fee to move the token, and whatever you pay to convert Canadian dollars into the coin. The third one is where exchange choice matters. Here is the published fee on buying $500 of ETH.

Published Fee On A $500 ETH Purchase
PlatformFee RuleOn $500
NDAX0.20% flat$1.00
Wealthsimple Crypto0.5% baseline plus spread$2.50 plus spread
KrakenInstant Buy 1%, plus spread$5.00 plus spread
CoinbaseUp to 1.875% on simple buys, varies by payment methodUp to $9.38 plus spread

My arithmetic on published fee schedules checked October 1, 2026. Spreads are shown in each order preview. Coinbase's Advanced and Kraken Pro rates are lower for active traders.

The network fee comes on top, and it changes with demand. Do not budget a fixed number. Check the wallet's estimate before you confirm, and keep a little extra ETH in the wallet so you are never stuck mid-purchase.

Which Exchange Is Best For Buying ETH For NFTs?

If you want one account to do everything, Coinbase is my first choice at 9.9, with a simple buy flow and the widest coin list. If you buy larger amounts, NDAX costs less at 0.20% flat, and Wealthsimple Crypto suits people who already invest there. All three are CSA-registered. See the full order on my best crypto exchanges in Canada page.

What Records Should An NFT Collector Keep?

  • The Canadian dollar value of the ETH you spent at the moment of purchase
  • The transaction hash for each buy, sell and transfer
  • The marketplace, collection name and token ID
  • Gas fees, in ETH and in Canadian dollars
  • The wallet address that held the NFT

The CRA says to keep records for six years and recommends exporting your history regularly. Marketplaces change and some shut down, so keep your own copy.

How Do You Keep An NFT Safe After You Buy It?

Treat the wallet holding it like a vault, not a browser tab. Keep valuable NFTs in a hardware wallet and use a separate hot wallet for minting and experiments. Be careful with any request to "approve" a contract, since an approval can let a malicious site move your tokens later. Check that the collection address matches the one the creator publishes, because copycat collections reuse artwork and names. If something looks off, stop and ask in a community you trust before you sign.

What Changed For NFTs In Canada In October 2026?

  • : the CRA's crypto transactions guide, which lists NFTs among reportable assets, carries this date.
  • : the proposed increase to the capital gains inclusion rate was cancelled, so 50% still applies to NFT gains held as capital property.
  • : OpenSea discontinued lazy minting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are NFTs Legal In Canada?

Yes. Buying, selling and minting NFTs is legal. The CRA treats them as crypto assets for tax purposes.

What Do I Need To Buy An NFT In Canada?

A funded exchange account, a wallet you control and the coin of the chain the NFT lives on, usually ETH. Buy slightly more than the price to cover network fees.

Which Exchange Should I Use To Buy ETH For NFTs?

A CSA-registered one. On my ranking that means Coinbase, Kraken, Wealthsimple Crypto, Newton or NDAX, all of which list Ethereum.

Do I Pay Tax When I Buy An NFT With ETH?

Yes, in effect. Paying with crypto is a barter, so spending ETH is a disposition of that ETH at its Canadian dollar value that day.

Do I Have To Report NFT Sales To The CRA?

Yes. The CRA lists selling, trading, bartering and gifting NFTs as reportable transactions.

Do NFT Creators Charge GST/HST?

NFTs are taxable intangible supplies for GST/HST. Below the $30,000 small supplier threshold you do not have to register, but check the CRA's GST/HST crypto page.

Can I Buy An NFT With Canadian Dollars Directly?

Some marketplaces accept cards, but the most reliable route is crypto from a registered exchange. Keep records either way.

Is It Safe To Keep NFTs On A Marketplace?

Your NFT sits in the wallet you connected, not on the marketplace. Use a hardware wallet for valuable ones and never share your recovery phrase.
