Our top pick for Canadians: CoinbaseSign Up

To buy GMT in Canada, open an account on a CSA-registered exchange that lists it, verify your ID, deposit Canadian dollars and place the order. On my scorecard that means Coinbase (9.8) and Kraken (9.2).

BTCC and Bitunix also list it, but they are offshore, so read the labels before you consider them.

  1. Coinbase, 9.8: a large, familiar app with free Interac funding
  2. Kraken, 9.2: free Interac deposits and cheaper trading on Kraken Pro

I have been trading crypto in Canada since 2016 and I have tested 61 exchanges to find the best ways for Canadians to buy coins like this one, and I share what I find on my YouTube channel, OCryptoCanada, and in the r/OCryptoCanada community. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned trader, this guide will help you make a smart, informed decision.

Part of my guide to how to buy crypto in Canada.

Why Buy GMT?

GMT isn’t your typical crypto, it’s the heartbeat of STEPN, a move-to-earn app on Solana that rewards you for walking, jogging, or running. Canadians might be hooked on its fitness-meets-Web3 vibe and staking perks, whether you’re strolling in Vancouver or hiking the Prairies.

A quick heads-up: crypto investments are risky, so always weigh the ups and downs before jumping in. I am not quoting a live GMT price here, since it would be out of date within hours. Check the order screen of your platform for the current CAD price, and judge any coin by what it does rather than by a chart. The facts below come from the project's own site, docs or whitepaper, or from the wallet vendor's own support pages.

What Is GMT, And What Is STEPN?

STEPN is described in its official whitepaper as a Web3 lifestyle app that rewards everyday outdoor activity: walking, jogging or running earns users game tokens and NFTs. It uses two tokens. GST is the game token earned through movement and gameplay, and GMT is the governance token. The whitepaper site also states that STEPN is in a public beta phase, meaning features and details may change, and STEPN's site presents STEPN OG and STEPN GO as apps that reward movement, with GMT Pay and GMT DAO voting initiatives mentioned.

How Does GMT Differ From GST?

The two tokens have opposite designs. GMT is capped at 6 billion tokens, and the whole 6,000,000,000 was minted at the token generation event on 9 March 2022. GST has an infinite supply, earned by walking, jogging or running with Classic sneakers and destroyed through activities such as shoe minting, repairs, leveling, gem upgrades, unlocking sockets, opening mystery boxes and sneaker enhancement.

Inside the app, GMT is burned to reach sneaker levels 5, 10, 20, 29 and 30, to upgrade Level 4+ gems, to mint sneakers of all qualities, to redistribute attribute points and to enhance sneaker quality. It can also be spent on permanent improvements such as raising the GST daily earning cap, improving gem upgrade success rates, improving shoebox quality odds and boosting dual-sneaker minting probability.

What Do The Documents Say About Supply, Unlocks And The Ecosystem Fund?

Of the total GMT supply, 30% was designated for distribution to users through move-and-earn and governance participation. STEPN points readers to gmtdao.com for the detailed distribution and vesting schedule, so I am not restating dates I did not verify. The governance and ecosystem fund documentation adds that 0.3% of the total GMT supply (18 million GMT) unlocks every month for ecosystem development, with unspent amounts held in treasury. It also says all GST that users spend in the app is burned daily from the Spending Account, that at least 5% of team profits go to supporting the FSL ecosystem, and it keeps a transparency log of GMT burns, cross-chain minting for liquidity and treasury actions on Solana, Ethereum and Polygon.

A monthly unlock is a steady source of new supply, which is worth weighing against the burn mechanics.

Which Networks Is GMT On?

GMT exists on Solana, BNB Chain, Ethereum and Polygon according to the whitepaper's contract table, and the tokenomics page marks the Ethereum versions of GST and GMT as inactive. The whitepaper lists the Solana GMT mint address as 7i5KKsX2weiTkry7jA4ZwSuXGhs5eJBEjY8vVxR4pfRx, the BNB Chain contract as 0x3019BF2a2eF8040C242C9a4c5c4BD4C81678b2A1 and the Polygon contract as 0x714DB550b574b3E927af3D93E26127D15721D4C2. In STEPN, SOL, BNB and POL are used only as gas when moving assets into the STEPN Spending account, and are not needed for other in-game activity.

Where Can You Buy GMT In Canada?

These are the platforms on my scorecard whose asset lists include GMT, in my fixed ranking order. Wealthsimple is left out because it publishes no coin list I can check, and I will not claim it carries GMT. Bitbuy and Coinsquare are left out because new accounts are being folded into Robinhood.

Coinbase and Crypto.com publish one global coin list, not a Canadian one. Check the coin in their Canadian app before you fund an account.

Asset lists differ by region and change over time, so confirm that GMT shows up in the app before you fund an account.

Buy GMT On Coinbase

Coinbase is a CSA Restricted Dealer, which makes it the easiest registered place to start. Interac e-Transfer and bank EFT are free for adding Canadian dollars. A simple buy costs up to 1.875% plus the spread, depending on how you pay, so compare the final quote against your other options before you confirm. Read my Coinbase review.

Buy GMT On Kraken

Kraken is also a CSA Restricted Dealer, and Interac e-Transfer deposits are free. Instant Buy costs 1%, while Kraken Pro starts at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, so anyone buying more than a token amount should switch to Pro. Read my Kraken review.

Buy GMT On BTCC

Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators. BTCC's own guidance lists Ontario and Quebec as restricted. No Canadian investor protection applies. It suits offshore futures traders who accept that no Canadian investor protection applies, and I do not recommend it for Canadians.

BTCC lists GMT, with spot fees of 0.2% maker and 0.3% taker. It is not on the CSA list, and its own help article names Ontario and Quebec as restricted provinces. I could not verify CAD funding. Read my BTCC review.

Buy GMT On Bitunix

Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its terms of service restrict Canadian residents. No Canadian investor protection applies. I do not recommend it for Canadians.

Bitunix lists GMT, with spot fees of 0.08% maker and 0.10% taker at the base tier and no CAD funding. Its restricted regions notice names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction.

How Do You Buy GMT In Canada Step By Step?

  1. Sign up to Coinbase. I use Coinbase here because it is the first CSA-registered platform in the table above that lists GMT. Download the app or use the website.
  2. Verify your identity. Upload a government-issued ID and a selfie, and sometimes proof of address. Verification can take up to 24 hours, so do it before you plan to buy.
  3. Deposit Canadian dollars. Interac e-Transfer and bank EFT are free for adding cash on Coinbase, and card and PayPal also work for buying, but they usually cost more.
  4. Find GMT. Search for the name and the ticker and check that both match. Some tickers are shared by unrelated coins, so confirm you picked GMT.
  5. Place the order. Use a market order for speed or a limit order if you want to name your price. Read the fee preview, because a simple buy can cost up to 1.875% plus the spread.
  6. Move long-term holdings to your own wallet. Check that the wallet supports GMT and its network, and send a small test transfer first. My best crypto wallets for Canadians list covers the options.

Which Wallets Support GMT, And How Do You Move It There?

Ledger Wallet supports Solana SPL tokens, and Stepn (GMT) is on the list of SPL tokens it supports, managed from the Solana account in the app. Phantom gives one receive address per network, so a Solana address receives Solana tokens, and it will create an Associated Token Account for a recipient if none exists. Phantom advises keeping at least 0.02 SOL for fees and rent.

When you withdraw from an exchange, match the network on the withdrawal screen to the chain you want, and verify the mint or contract against STEPN's whitepaper list above. Send a small test first.

How Risky Is GMT?

Any coin outside the top few can fall hard and trade thinly, and GMT is no exception. Thin trading means a wider gap between the buy and sell price, and that gap is a real cost on a small order. Buy only what you can lose, and decide in advance whether this is a trade or a long-term hold. I do not make price predictions, and nobody else can either.

How Do You Store GMT?

Keeping your GMT safe is something you must do if you do not want to risk it being stolen. For safekeeping, use a private crypto wallet. Choose one of the crypto wallets I reviewed, and then send your GMT from the exchange you used to buy it to your wallet. If you buy any valuable cryptocurrency, always move it to a private wallet to keep it secure. Check that the wallet supports the coin and its network first, because sending to an unsupported address can lose the funds for good. Write your recovery phrase on paper, never store it in a photo or a cloud note, and never share it with anyone, including anyone claiming to be support.

How Do You Sell GMT In Canada?

To sell, go to the exchange where you bought it. If your coins are in a wallet, send them back to the exchange first, then click sell. You can swap GMT for another cryptocurrency, or sell it for Canadian dollars if the exchange offers that, and then withdraw to your bank account. Withdrawal fees and limits differ by platform. My guide on how to sell or cash out crypto in Canada has the full steps.

Do You Pay Tax When You Buy GMT In Canada?

Buying GMT with Canadian dollars is not itself a taxable event. Selling it, swapping it for another coin or spending it can be. The CRA says that, depending on your activities, you may realize business income (or loss) or a capital gain (or loss), and the two are reported differently. Record the date and CAD value of every buy, sale and swap. See my crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes.

What Changed For Buying GMT In Canada In October 2026?

  • Kraken republished its fee schedule, with Pro spot starting at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
  • Coinbase launched regulated crypto derivatives for eligible Canadian investors through Coinbase Financial Markets. It is not a way to buy the coin itself.
  • Bitunix Innovation Limited's FINTRAC registration expired.
