Yes, Canadians can buy crypto with PayPal, but through Coinbase, not by buying inside PayPal itself. Coinbase announced on August 5, 2025 that Canadian users can select PayPal as a payment option to buy and sell crypto, and its help table lists PayPal as a method for buying and cashing out. Coinbase does not call PayPal a free method, and its Canadian fee disclosure says it may charge a fee of 1.875% that varies by payment method. For lower costs, Interac e-Transfer on a registered exchange usually wins.
- PayPal on Coinbase: buy and cash out, fee varies
- Cheaper: Interac e-Transfer or EFT into NDAX, Wealthsimple Crypto or Coinbase
| Payment Method | What It Does | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| PayPal | Buy and cash out | Fee not published; not marked free |
| Interac e-Transfer | Add cash and cash out; cannot buy directly with it | Free |
| Bank Account (EFT) | Buy directly; credited instantly, with a hold period before you send or withdraw | Free |
| Wire Transfer | Add cash only, 1 to 3 business days | Not published |
| 3D Secure Card | Buy only, instant | Not published; varies by method |

Part of my guide to how to buy crypto in Canada.
Why Won't PayPal Let Me Buy Bitcoin?
PayPal's own crypto buying feature is not something I could confirm for Canadian accounts. Its Canadian crypto page returned an error when I tried to load it, so I cannot quote PayPal directly, and several comparison sites say the feature is US-only. What I can verify is the workaround: Coinbase's announcement says Canadians can use PayPal on Coinbase. If the Crypto section is missing in your PayPal app, that is why, and you do not need it. Check your own app before assuming either way.
How Do You Buy Crypto With PayPal In Canada?
- Open a Coinbase account. It is CSA-registered and number one on my ranking at 9.9. Use my Coinbase link.
- Verify your identity. This is required of every registered platform.
- Add PayPal as a payment method. Go to the payment methods section and link your PayPal account.
- Preview the order. Coinbase shows the spread and the fee before you confirm. Compare the total with an Interac e-Transfer purchase.
- Buy, then decide where to keep it. Move long-term holdings to a wallet you control.
The step names may change as Coinbase updates its app, so rely on the on-screen preview. My Coinbase review has the fee details.
How Much Does Buying Crypto With PayPal Cost?
Coinbase's Canadian fee disclosure says it may charge a Coinbase fee of 1.875% that varies by payment method, plus a spread shown in the order preview. It does not say that PayPal carries the highest or lowest rate, so I will not guess. Use arithmetic on a $500 buy: a 1.875% fee is $9.38 before spread. By comparison, NDAX charges a flat 0.20%, which is $1.00 on $500, and Wealthsimple charges a 0.5% baseline fee, or $2.50 plus its spread. NDAX also charges $1.50 for Interac e-Transfer deposits up to $10,000.
| Platform | Fee Rule | On $500 |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | Up to 1.875%, varies by payment method | Up to $9.38 plus spread |
| Wealthsimple Crypto | 0.5% baseline plus spread | $2.50 plus spread |
| NDAX | 0.20% flat plus $1.50 Interac deposit | $2.50 |
| Newton | Spread of 1.00% to 1.15% on BTC | $5.00 to $5.75 |
My arithmetic on published schedules. The Coinbase figure is the maximum named in its disclosure, so your actual fee may be lower.
Is Buying Crypto With PayPal Safe?
The regulated platform is what keeps it safe, not the payment method. PayPal funding does not change the fact that crypto is not covered by CIPF, and a purchase you pay for with PayPal is final once you convert. Scammers sometimes ask for PayPal payments for crypto from strangers, which is the opposite of what you want. Only use PayPal with a registered platform, not with a person who contacts you. My scam guide covers the patterns.
Can I Buy Fractions Of Bitcoin?
Yes. Bitcoin divides into 100 million units called satoshis, so you can buy $20 of it. Most regulated platforms have a minimum purchase of a few dollars. Shakepay's e-Transfer deposits start at $5, for example.
How Do You Cash Out Crypto In Canada Back To PayPal?
Coinbase's help table lists PayPal as a cash out method as well as a buy method. You sell the crypto and withdraw the proceeds to PayPal, or you can cash out through Interac e-Transfer or EFT. Remember the tax side: selling is a disposition, and half of any capital gain is taxable. For the process, see how to sell Bitcoin and cash out in Canada and how to report crypto taxes.
What Is The Best Wallet For Beginners?
Start on the exchange for small amounts. When you hold enough that losing it would hurt, move to a hardware wallet. My best crypto wallets for Canadians page explains the options, and cold storage in Canada covers how to set one up.
Which Coins Can You Buy With PayPal On Coinbase?
Coinbase does not publish a Canadian asset list, so check the coin's page on Coinbase's Canadian site before you plan around it. What I could verify: Tether (USDT) and Dai are not tradable on Coinbase's Canadian site, USDC is the one stablecoin allowed under the CSA's rules, and there are no purchase limits on BTC, ETH, SOL, USDC, BCH and LTC. Other assets carry a $30,000 rolling 12-month cap for residents of Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and the territories, and no cap in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec. That cap applies whatever payment method you use.
Should You Use PayPal Or A Bank Transfer To Fund Crypto?
Use whichever the order preview shows as cheaper. On Coinbase, Interac e-Transfer is free to add cash, but it cannot buy directly, while a bank transfer by EFT is free and can. PayPal is faster to set up if the money already sits in your PayPal balance. The point to remember is that convenience can cost you more than 1% on the same trade.
What Changed For Buying Crypto With PayPal In Canada In October 2026?
- : Coinbase announced PayPal as a payment option for Canadian users to buy and sell crypto.
- : Robinhood completed its WonderFi acquisition, bringing Bitbuy and Coinsquare customers to a new app.
- : Coinbase launched crypto derivatives in Canada for permitted clients only, a separate product from the PayPal purchase route.
