What Is HIVE Blockchain Stock?
HIVE is a publicly traded company, not a coin. It started as a bitcoin miner and still earns most of its revenue that way: US$278.3 million of its US$297.8 million in FY2026 came from digital currency mining. The company says it mined 2,885 bitcoin in the year, more than double the 1,414 of FY2025, on the back of roughly a four-fold increase in installed hashrate. If you have followed miners for long, you will know the older name was HIVE Blockchain Technologies. The ticker has been HIVE throughout.
Why Is HIVE Moving Into AI And High-Performance Computing?
Mining margins depend on bitcoin's price and on network difficulty, and both swing. HIVE's answer is BUZZ HPC, which hosts GPU computing for AI workloads. In its FY2026 release it reports HPC hosting revenue of US$19.5 million, contracted annual recurring revenue of US$35 million, a 504-GPU NVIDIA B200 cluster running at Bell Canada's AI Fabric as of May 2026, and a target of US$660 million in annual recurring revenue by the end of 2028 anchored by a planned 320 MW facility in the Greater Toronto Area. Those are company targets, not results.
Why Did HIVE Stock Crash, And Is It Still A Buy?
People ask both questions, and I will not answer either with a price call. I do not give price targets or predictions, because nobody can honestly make them. What I can say is structural: a miner's share price tends to follow bitcoin and mining economics, and a business pivot like HPC adds execution risk on top. If you want bitcoin exposure without that, a spot bitcoin ETF such as the ones in my Canadian bitcoin ETF ranking is a simpler tool. Mining itself is explained in my crypto mining in Canada guide.
How Do Canadians Buy HIVE Shares?
Through a brokerage account that trades the TSX or Nasdaq, in a registered or non-registered account. That is stock investing, not a crypto exchange purchase. Compare it with buying bitcoin outright on a registered platform such as Coinbase, Kraken or Wealthsimple Crypto, or via an ETF. Tax treatment differs: shares in a taxable account trigger capital gains or losses under normal CRA rules, while spot crypto follows the CRA's commodity treatment. See crypto taxation in Canada.
What Supports The Case
- Revenue up 158% in FY2026
- Mining output more than doubled
- Now on the TSX as well as Nasdaq
What Adds Risk
- Earnings tied to bitcoin price and difficulty
- HPC targets are plans, not results
- Reports in US dollars, so CAD holders carry currency risk
How Does A Bitcoin Miner Actually Make Money?
A miner spends electricity and hardware to compete for new bitcoin and transaction fees. The revenue is the bitcoin it wins, valued at the market price, and the costs are power, equipment depreciation, hosting and staff. HIVE's FY2026 numbers show the shape of it: US$278.3 million of digital currency revenue and a gross operating margin of US$107.9 million, a 36% margin on US$297.8 million of total revenue, up from 22% the year before. Margin moves when bitcoin's price moves, when network difficulty rises, and when the halving cuts rewards. The company said 2,885 bitcoin mined in the year outpaced an increase of about 42% in average network difficulty, which is the measure that matters: HIVE's output grew faster than the competition for blocks.
My crypto mining in Canada guide covers the economics for an individual. A public miner is the same business at industrial scale, with shareholders on top.
What Is The Hashrate, And Why Does It Matter?
Hashrate is the amount of computing power a miner points at the network. HIVE reported 25.1 EH/s installed at March 31, 2026, or about 24.5 EH/s after controlled downclocking to optimise the fleet, and 25.3 EH/s at the date of the release. Its Q1 fiscal 2026 results had already reported an average of 8.9 EH/s, representing 45% quarter over quarter growth. More hashrate means more bitcoin earned, but only if the machines are efficient enough to cover their power cost at prevailing prices. That is why miners publish efficiency figures alongside raw capacity.
What Is BUZZ HPC And How Big Is It?
BUZZ HPC is HIVE's AI and high-performance computing arm. It rents GPU capacity, the same class of chip used to train and run AI models. HIVE's FY2026 release gives these figures:
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| HPC hosting revenue | US$19.5 million, up 94% |
| Share of total revenue | About 6.5% (US$19.5 million of US$297.8 million, my arithmetic) |
| Contracted annual recurring revenue | US$35 million |
| Operational cluster | 504 NVIDIA B200 GPUs at Bell Canada's AI Fabric (May 2026) |
| Target | US$660 million ARR by the end of 2028, anchored by a planned 320 MW facility in the Greater Toronto Area |
The gap between US$35 million contracted today and a US$660 million target is the story. Read it as an ambition. Companies often miss multi-year targets, and building 320 MW of capacity needs financing, equipment and power.
What Are The Main Risks Of Owning A Crypto Miner Stock?
- Bitcoin price risk. Most revenue is bitcoin, so a falling price hits revenue while costs stay put.
- Difficulty and halving risk. Rewards fall at each halving, and difficulty rises as more miners join.
- Execution risk. The HPC pivot requires large capital spending and signed customers.
- Currency risk. HIVE reports in US dollars. A Canadian holder of a US-dollar business carries exchange-rate exposure, particularly on the Nasdaq line.
- Dilution risk. Capital-hungry companies often issue shares. Check the filings.
- Volatility. Miner shares often swing more than bitcoin itself. I do not publish price targets and neither should anyone selling you a prediction.
Where Can You Read HIVE's Official Numbers?
Primary sources beat any summary, including mine. HIVE files annual and quarterly results on SEDAR+ as a Canadian issuer and as 6-K forms on the SEC's EDGAR system because it is listed on Nasdaq. The results release I used is dated June 2, 2026. Read the management discussion, the risk factors and the list of customers before you rely on any HPC claim.
How Does HIVE Compare With Owning Bitcoin Through An ETF?
| Factor | HIVE Shares | Spot Bitcoin ETF (FBTC) |
|---|---|---|
| What it tracks | A business with mining and HPC lines | Bitcoin held by the fund |
| Ongoing fee | None as such; costs sit inside company results | 0.35% MER, 0.32% management fee |
| Other drivers | Power costs, difficulty, AI demand, financing | Essentially bitcoin's price |
| Currency | Reports in USD, trades in CAD and USD lines | FBTC trades in CAD, FBTC-U in USD |
If you only want bitcoin's price, the ETF is cleaner. If you want a business that might outgrow bitcoin, and you accept it might underperform it, that is what a miner share is. See FBTC and BTCX.B.
Can You Hold HIVE In A TFSA Or RRSP?
The CRA describes TFSA investments as qualified investments such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds and ETFs, and shares listed on a designated stock exchange are generally qualified. The TSX is one. Confirm with your brokerage that a specific listing, TSX or Nasdaq, is eligible in your account type before you buy, and read my TFSA crypto page for the wider picture.
