Canadians can get professionally managed crypto exposure through exchange-traded funds listed on the TSX or Cboe Canada, through private funds sold to eligible investors, or through an advisor registered with a provincial securities regulator. For most people the simplest route is a Bitcoin or Ether ETF in a brokerage account. Always check an advisor's registration before handing over money.
- Simplest: a listed Bitcoin or Ether ETF, with fees published by the issuer
- Private funds: hedge-fund style products are restricted to eligible investors
- Advisors: verify registration on the CSA's National Registration Search
Search volume on "crypto fund canada" is small, but the readers behind it are the ones with real money and real questions: Can my advisor put me in crypto? What is the difference between an index fund and a hedge fund? Who is allowed to sell it to me? Here are the answers I can stand behind, with the fund fees I verified.

What Crypto Funds Can Canadians Buy?
The core category is the spot crypto ETF: a fund that holds the coin and trades on a stock exchange. Purpose launched the first Bitcoin ETF in 2021, and its fund holds bitcoin in cold storage. Evolve, Fidelity, CI Galaxy and BlackRock (through its iShares ETF on Cboe Canada) sell competing Bitcoin products, and Purpose, CI Galaxy and Evolve sell Ether ones. Canada also has spot Solana and XRP ETFs; see my SOLQ explainer. For the full fund breakdown, read my Bitcoin ETFs in Canada and crypto ETFs in Canada rankings.
Is There A Crypto Index Fund Or Mutual Fund In Canada?
There are multi-coin and blockchain-themed ETFs, but I have not verified the current terms of the ones I know, so I will not list them with numbers. For a basket, ask your advisor for the fund facts sheet and look at the holdings, the fee and whether the fund holds coins or shares of companies. A "crypto mutual fund" from a bank would show up in the same documents. If no fund facts exist, it is not an ordinary retail fund.
Can I Buy A Crypto Hedge Fund In Canada?
Usually only if you qualify. Private funds, including hedge funds, are sold under exemptions from the prospectus requirement, and those exemptions limit sales to investors who meet the accredited investor tests in National Instrument 45-106. Thresholds change, so check the current ones with your provincial regulator or advisor. Ordinary retail investors use public funds. A fund that advertises guaranteed returns to anyone is a red flag, whatever it calls itself.
How Do I Check That A Crypto Advisor Is Registered?
- Search the person and the firm on the CSA's National Registration Search.
- Confirm the firm is a member of CIRO if it sells securities. Wealthsimple, Newton, NDAX, Shakepay and Coinsquare's dealer all hold CIRO membership.
- Ask what products they can sell you and in which accounts.
- Ask for the fee in writing, including any fund MER on top of the advisor's fee.
- Walk away from anyone who promises returns or asks you to send crypto to a personal wallet.
Which Platforms Are Regulated Dealers?
| Platform | Status | Cash Protection |
|---|---|---|
| Wealthsimple Crypto | CIRO dealer member, CSA-registered | Cash covered by CIPF; crypto is not |
| Newton | CIRO investment dealer since March 18, 2026 | CIPF member for cash; crypto not protected |
| NDAX | CIRO dealer member and marketplace | Not verified |
| Shakepay | CIRO dealer member | USD funds protected up to $1M by CIPF; crypto not covered |
| Coinbase | CSA Restricted Dealer, not a CIRO member | Canadian fiat wallets not covered by CIPF or CDIC |
| Kraken | CSA Restricted Dealer | Not covered by CIPF |
A CIRO membership means the firm answers to the investment industry's self-regulator, but crypto itself is outside CIPF coverage at every platform. That is a big deal if the firm fails. See my exchange ranking for how I weigh it.
How Are Crypto Funds Taxed?
A fund is not the same as owning coins. When you sell units of an ETF, the gain is a capital disposition reported on Schedule 3, like any other unit or share. The CRA's crypto guidance covers coin transactions. If you hold crypto directly, see my crypto taxation guide. If an advisor puts you in a fund inside an RRSP, see Bitcoin in an RRSP. I am not a tax professional, so confirm with one.
What Do The Fees Cost On A $10,000 Holding?
| Fund | MER | Approximate Yearly Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| iShares Bitcoin ETF (IBIT) | 0.33% | $33 | Sep 30, 2026 |
| Fidelity Advantage Bitcoin ETF (FBTC) | 0.35% | $35 | Mar 31, 2026 |
| CI Galaxy Bitcoin ETF (BTCX.B) | 0.71% | $71 | Jun 30, 2026 |
| Evolve Bitcoin ETF (EBIT) | Not retrieved; management fee 0.75% plus sales tax | At least $75 | Management fee only |
| Purpose Bitcoin ETF (BTCC) | 1.29% | $129 | Jun 30, 2026 |
Add your own trading costs. Holding coins on an exchange costs you the fee at purchase and nothing a year, so a fund is a convenience product. It is worth paying for if you want the position inside a registered account.
Do Crypto ETFs Hold Real Coins?
The spot funds say they do. Purpose says its Bitcoin ETF holds bitcoin in cold storage with sub-custodians including Anchorage Digital Bank. Fidelity says it stores its coins in-house with a cold wallet of at least 98%. iShares' Canadian Bitcoin ETF invests in a US iShares Bitcoin Trust and has a custody arrangement with Coinbase Prime. 3iQ's Bitcoin ETF uses Tetra Trust Company as custodian with Coinbase Custody Trust Company as sub-custodian, per the issuer page I read, and that page was dated 2025. Evolve's fund tracks the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate. Read the prospectus for the arrangement that applies on the day you buy.
What Should I Ask A Crypto Advisor Before Investing?
- Are you registered, and with which regulator?
- Which products can you sell me, and what do they cost in total?
- Who holds the crypto, and is it covered by CIPF? (It is not.)
- What happens if I want out?
- How do you get paid?
How Do Staking And Ether Funds Differ?
Ether funds show the spread between products. The Purpose Ether ETF stakes a portion of its ether, with a 1.00% management fee and 1.42% MER as of June 30, 2026. CI Galaxy's Ethereum ETF lists a 0.40% management fee and 1.14% MER that includes the staking service fee. CI's page says at least 75% of staking rewards accrue to the ETF, that 39.4489% of the ETH was staked and that the net staking yield was 0.84% as of September 30, 2026. Evolve's Ether ETF holds physical ether and its page does not mention staking. Staking changes the return and adds a lockup risk, so read each fund's page rather than assuming.
One last point on wealth managers: if an advisor wants to hold crypto for you outside a listed fund, ask who the custodian is and whether that custodian is a registered Canadian firm. Coinbase and Kraken, for example, are Restricted Dealers under CSA terms, while Wealthsimple, Newton, NDAX and Shakepay are CIRO dealer members. The legal category tells you which rulebook applies if something goes wrong.
What Changed For Crypto Funds And Advisors In October 2026?
- Newton became a CIRO investment dealer member.
- Four spot Solana ETFs launched on the TSX, the first of their kind.
- 3iQ's XRP ETF (XRPQ) launched on the TSX.
- iShares Bitcoin ETF began trading on Cboe Canada.
