The one operator whose Canadian ATM list I can verify is Bitcoin Well, which shows about 150 machines across eight provinces, with Alberta (52) and Ontario (46) leading. Other operators are registered with FINTRAC, but I could not verify their machine counts. Before you drive anywhere, know that the federal government proposed in 2026 to ban crypto ATMs, and that online platforms on my list are almost always cheaper.

  • Largest verified fleet: Bitcoin Well, 153 ATMs listed by province on its site
  • ID rule: FINTRAC requires identity checks on virtual currency exchanges of $1,000 or more; Bitcoin Well allows purchases up to $950 before ID
  • Federal proposal: the 2026 Spring Economic Update proposed a ban on crypto ATMs, with legislation to follow

"Crypto ATM near me" is a location question, but the more useful question is whether a machine is the right tool at all. ATMs are the fastest way to turn cash into bitcoin. They are also the most expensive way, and the place where scammers send victims. This page gives you the operator facts I can verify, the rules that apply, and a way to price any machine before you feed it cash. I do not publish a map, because I cannot verify a live one, and a stale pin is worse than none.

Where Can You Find A Bitcoin ATM Near You In Canada?

Bitcoin Well runs a location finder on its site, which lists its ATMs by province (Bitcoin Well ATM locator). Third-party directories such as Coin ATM Radar list machines from many operators, but I have not verified their data, and they can lag behind removals. Whichever you use, confirm the operator's name on the machine, since the brand on the shell is often the manufacturer, not the company you are dealing with.

Bitcoin Well says its first ATM went in during 2014, that it is a public company (TSX.V: BTCW) and that it is FINTRAC-registered. Its ATMs send bitcoin straight to a wallet you control, and no account is required for smaller purchases. That is a real convenience, and also the reason the fees are higher than on an exchange.

Which Companies Operate Bitcoin ATMs In Canada?

I checked FINTRAC's public money services business registry for operators whose names or websites point to ATMs. Registration with FINTRAC is a compliance check, not a safety rating, but a missing, ceased or expired registration is a reason to walk away.

ATM-Linked Operators In The FINTRAC Registry
OperatorRegistry StatusListed ExpiryNotes
Bitcoin Well Canada Ltd.Registered (M19811620)October 8, 2026Services: money transferring and virtual currency
Localcoin (9992987 Canada Inc.)Registered (M20643902)November 10, 2027Website: localcoinatm.com
Instacoin ATM Canada Inc.Registered (M20484478)November 4, 2027Website: instacoinatm.com; a separate Quebec entity is also registered
CoinMarket ATM (9456-1891 Quebec Inc.)Registered (N300000295)December 31, 2028Initial registration March 18, 2026
Bitcoin Depot Operating LLCListed as registered (M23729278)April 30, 2026, already passedUS-based; check whether a renewal is posted before using its machines
Orion Currency Partners Inc. (Bitaccess)Ceased (M19258895)November 30, 2022; ceased April 1, 2022Bitaccess is a machine vendor, not the ATM operator

The Bitcoin Well registration expires on October 8, 2026, a few days after this was written. Registrations are normally renewed, but check the registry rather than assume. My table does not rank these companies. The registry says who is registered, not who has fair prices.

How Much Does A Bitcoin ATM Charge Per $100?

I could not verify a published Canadian fee for most operators, and Bitcoin Well says its ATM fees are shown before you complete a transaction. So I will not give you a made-up average. Use this method instead. Compare the machine's price per bitcoin to a live market price at the same moment, add any fixed fee, and divide the total extra cost by the amount of cash you inserted. The percentage is your real cost.

Illustrative ATM Cost Scenarios On $100 Of Cash, For Calculating Your Own Quote
Premium Over Market PricePlus Fixed FeeBitcoin You Receive WorthEffective Cost
3%$0$97.09 at market value2.91%
10%$0$90.91 at market value9.09%
10%$2$89.09 at market value10.91%
15%$0$86.96 at market value13.04%

The scenarios are my arithmetic, not any operator's price. The comparison point is this: Bitcoin Well's online portal charges a 1.5% spread to buy for verified accounts, and NDAX charges a flat 0.20% trading fee (Bitcoin Well rates). My fee comparison on a $1,000 trade shows the rest. If an ATM quote lands above those, you are paying for convenience and cash.

Do You Need ID To Use A Bitcoin ATM In Canada?

FINTRAC's guidance says a money services business must verify the identity of anyone who asks it to transfer or exchange virtual currency in an amount equivalent to $1,000 or more (FINTRAC guidance for money services businesses). Bitcoin Well lets you buy up to $950 before ID verification. Below those thresholds, an operator may or may not ask, and operators can set stricter rules. That is not the same as being anonymous. The machine has cameras, the operator keeps transaction records, and the blockchain keeps a public ledger.

Are Crypto ATMs Going To Be Banned In Canada?

That is the proposal. Canada's Spring Economic Update proposed to ban crypto ATMs "to protect Canadians from fraud, crack down on scammers, and fight the financial crimes that support and enable drug trafficking, extortion, and other economically motivated crimes". The Department of Finance page, dated May 6, 2026, says the details will come in legislation "expected to be tabled shortly" (Department of Finance Canada). I did not find a passed law as of this writing, so machines are still operating. If it passes, expect a transition period you cannot predict from here. The same page says Canadians can keep using brick-and-mortar and online regulated platforms.

How Do Crypto ATM Scams Work, And How Do You Avoid Them?

The government's own page says crypto ATMs have become a primary method for scammers to extract cash from victims. It cites studies finding that between 85 and 98 per cent of crypto ATM transactions are linked to illicit activity, and says the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre estimates Canadians lost between $142 million and $284 million to fraud facilitated by crypto ATMs in 2024, after allowing for under-reporting. Those are government figures, and the 85 to 98 per cent range is from studies the page does not name.

  • Never deposit cash because someone told you to. No real bank, tax agency, police officer or utility takes payment in bitcoin from an ATM.
  • Never scan a wallet QR code that a stranger sent you. You are the one choosing the address. If someone else chose it, the coins go to them.
  • Stop if you are on the phone with the person who sent you. A caller who stays on the line while you go to the machine is a classic pattern.
  • Report it fast. Contact your local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. The coins are hard to recover, but a quick report helps.

For the full list of patterns, read my guide to common crypto scams in Canada.

Can You Use Bitcoin At Walmart In Canada?

I could not find an official Walmart Canada statement that it accepts bitcoin at checkout or hosts crypto ATMs in its stores, so I will not say yes. Most retail payments in Canada with crypto go through a crypto-linked prepaid card; see my page on crypto rewards cards in Canada. For spending coins, read how to spend bitcoin in Canada.

Is An ATM Better Than An Exchange?

For cash, it is the only option on this page. For almost everything else, no. With a bank account, a registered exchange such as Coinbase, Kraken or Newton costs a fraction of an ATM, offers better protection, and does not require you to carry cash. My guide on how to use a Bitcoin ATM in Canada covers the steps, and the best crypto exchanges ranking shows the alternatives.

What Can You Actually Do At A Bitcoin Well ATM?

Bitcoin Well's own help guide spells out the limits, which is rare for an ATM operator. Its machines only accept cash and do not dispense it, so you cannot cash out there; to sell bitcoin for dollars you use its online portal and receive an e-Transfer. A Lite account can buy up to $995 per transaction. A verified account has no limit on direct on-chain bitcoin purchases made with cash. Cash vouchers are limited to $950 per transaction and $3,000 per day. The ATMs print no paper receipt, so you enter an email address for a digital one or photograph the confirmation screen, and you can pay a small extra fee for a Priority option to speed up confirmation (Bitcoin Well ATM guide).

The guide also says identity verification is required only for transactions above $950 and that this applies to all Bitcoin ATMs nationwide. FINTRAC's guidance sets the identity check at virtual currency transfers or exchanges of $1,000 or more, so the operator's $950 line sits just below the legal one. Photograph the confirmation screen on every purchase. You need the amount and date for your records, as I explain in my ACB guide.

What Changed For Bitcoin ATMs In Canada In October 2026?

  • Bitcoin Well Canada Ltd.'s FINTRAC registration reaches its listed expiry date.
  • The Department of Finance page confirms the proposed crypto ATM ban, with legislation to follow.
  • The listed FINTRAC expiry for Bitcoin Depot Operating LLC passed.
  • CoinMarket ATM (9456-1891 Quebec Inc.) received its initial FINTRAC registration.
