Our top pick for Canadians: CoinbaseSign Up

I could not verify a true crypto rewards credit card issued in Canada, so the realistic options are prepaid Visa cards that you load with Canadian dollars. Shakepay's prepaid card pays up to 1.5% cashback in bitcoin, and the Crypto.com prepaid card offers up to 4.5% back, but only for Level Up members with an active CRO lockup or stake or a subscription. Buying crypto with a regular credit card is also harder than it looks, because several big Canadian banks have blocked it.

  • Shakepay Visa Prepaid: up to 1.5% bitcoin cashback, no annual fee, no credit check
  • Crypto.com Prepaid Visa: up to 4.5% back with Level Up and CRO staking or a subscription
  • Credit card purchases of crypto: RBC says it no longer allows them; TD and BMO banned them in 2018

"Crypto credit card Canada" is mostly two different searches. One is "which card pays me in crypto", and the other is "can I buy crypto with my credit card". The answers are different, and neither is the clean yes you will see on affiliate sites. I list what I can read on the issuer's own pages and nothing else.

What Are The Best Bitcoin And Crypto Rewards Cards In Canada?

Verified Crypto Rewards Cards Available To Canadians
CardRewardsTypeCosts And Limits
Shakepay Visa Prepaid (extra pick)Up to 1.5% cashback in bitcoin at eligible merchants, settled to your Shakepay bitcoin balancePrepaid, spends your Shakepay CAD balanceNo annual fee, no credit check, available in all 13 provinces and territories
Crypto.com Prepaid Visa (extra pick)Up to 4.5% back, plus rebates on Spotify, Netflix and Truth+ and airport lounge access at higher plansPrepaid; top up from cash or cryptoATM withdrawals C$700 a day on the base card up to C$2,500 on top cards; top-up C$15,000 a day, C$35,000 a month

Neither is a credit card, so neither builds credit and neither lets you borrow. Both spend money you have already loaded. I rank them as extras because neither is on my main list of the ten best exchanges, but the card is a legitimate reason to pick the platform behind it. Shakepay is a CIRO investment dealer. Crypto.com is a CSA Restricted Dealer, with a decision dated May 8, 2025.

How Does The Shakepay Card Work?

Shakepay says you top up your Canadian-dollar balance by funding your account, then spend anywhere Visa is accepted, including with Apple Pay and Google Pay where available. Rewards of up to 1.5% in bitcoin cashback are paid automatically to the bitcoin balance in your account (Shakepay Card). "Up to" matters: the page does not give the tier that earns the maximum, so I cannot say what a typical cardholder earns. The physical card is described as new on that page.

How Does The Crypto.com Card Work In Canada?

Crypto.com's help centre lists the Canadian card's limits by level, and says that since September 2, 2025, Level Up users with an active CRO lockup or stake, or a subscription, get up to 4.5% back on spending with no minimum, plus Spotify and Netflix rebates of up to US$13.99 a month each in CRO, a Truth+ rebate of up to US$9.95, and airport lounge access (Crypto.com card rewards; fees and limits). Rewards depend on locking up or staking CRO, which is itself a price risk, and a card whose best rate needs a locked position is a different product from a plain cashback card. For the Canadian detail, read my page on using the Crypto.com card in Canada and the overview of crypto Visa cards in Canada.

Can You Buy Crypto With A Credit Card In Canada?

Sometimes, and it is often a bad idea. RBC's notice says that effective immediately it no longer allows RBC credit cards for transactions involving cryptocurrency (RBC notice). CBC reported in 2018 that BMO stopped retail customers from buying crypto with Mastercard-branded credit or debit cards, following TD's move the month before (CBC News). Issuers can change these rules, so read your own card agreement. On the exchange side, Coinbase lists a 3D Secure card as a buy-only method, and Kraken charges CA$0.25 plus 3.75% on a debit card deposit. I did not verify credit card acceptance for the others.

Funding Crypto By Card Versus By Interac e-Transfer
MethodCost On A $500 BuyNotes
Kraken debit card deposit$0.25 plus 3.75%, or $19.00Published on Kraken's deposit fee page; does not count toward its referral requirement
Coinbase 3D Secure cardFee not publishedBuy only; instant; may be blocked by your bank
Interac e-Transfer, any ranked platform$0Free on Coinbase, Kraken, Wealthsimple, Newton, NDAX and Shakepay per their fee pages
Credit cardYour issuer decidesRBC no longer allows it; others may treat it as a cash advance, so check your agreement

A $500 card purchase on Kraken costs $19.00 in deposit fees, which is more than the trading fee on any platform in my fee comparison. Add credit card interest and you are paying a lot to buy something volatile with borrowed money. I do not recommend it. If a bank blocks your card, my page on whether Canadian banks can block crypto purchases covers what to do.

Which Is Better: A Crypto Card Or A Normal Cashback Credit Card?

That depends on what you value. A normal Canadian cashback credit card builds credit, has consumer protections and may pay a steady percentage in dollars. A prepaid crypto card pays in bitcoin or CRO, which can rise or fall, and spending it can trigger a taxable disposition if you spend crypto instead of dollars. With Shakepay, the card spends your CAD balance, so the card spend itself is not a crypto disposition, and the bitcoin rewards are the thing to track. The CRA treats paying with crypto as a barter transaction, which is a disposition at fair market value, so if you load crypto onto a card instead of cash, keep records. See my crypto tax guide and how to spend bitcoin in Canada.

How Do You Choose A Crypto Card?

  1. Decide whether you want bitcoin or a stable reward. Shakepay pays in bitcoin. Crypto.com pays in CRO, tied to its Level Up plans.
  2. Read the condition behind "up to". Shakepay does not state the tier for 1.5%. Crypto.com requires Level Up and a CRO lockup or subscription for the top rate.
  3. Check limits. Crypto.com lists daily and monthly ATM and top-up limits by level; check the Canadian page for yours.
  4. Check the platform first. The card is a feature of the account. Make sure you trust the platform, with CIRO or CSA registration as a baseline.
  5. Keep records. Rewards and spending may both have tax effects, and the CRA wants records for six years.

How Do The Two Cards Compare On The Platform Behind Them?

Shakepay And Crypto.com Behind The Card
DetailShakepayCrypto.com
Regulatory statusCIRO investment dealer member since January 8, 2025; CSA decision January 8, 2025CSA Restricted Dealer, decision May 8, 2025
Coins on the platformBitcoin, Ethereum and USDC onlyExchange API lists 417 spot base assets; the Canadian app list is narrower and not published
Trading costSpread of 0.5% to 2.0% over benchmark, up to 1.5% more in adverse conditionsCanadian app fee schedule not retrievable; marketing says as low as 0.08% maker and 0.18% taker
Interac depositFree, min $5, max $10,000Zero-fee deposits by bank transfer, card or crypto, with other fees and spread possible
Referral offer$20 each when a friend invests $100 within 30 daysLegacy Welcome Bonus; amount not verified

The card is a perk. The spread on Shakepay's trades can easily exceed a 1.5% cashback, so if you will trade on the platform regularly, work out the net before you chase the reward. On a $1,000 buy at a 2.0% spread you pay $20, which is more than you would earn back on $1,000 of card spending. Check the fee comparison before you decide.

What Do You Give Up With A Prepaid Card Compared With A Credit Card?

A prepaid card cannot build your credit history and offers no borrowing float. It does not come with the purchase protections some credit cards carry, and I did not verify what protections either prepaid card offers, so I will not claim any. What you gain is a direct path from your crypto account to spending and, in Shakepay's case, a bitcoin reward with no annual fee and no credit check. If your priority is consumer protection or building credit, a regular credit card still does that better, and you can buy bitcoin separately by e-Transfer for far less than a card purchase of crypto.

What Changed For Crypto Cards In Canada In October 2026?

  • Crypto.com updated its prepaid card rewards page, which lists up to 4.5% back for Level Up users with an active CRO lockup or subscription.
  • Crypto.com updated its Canadian prepaid card fees and limits page.
  • The CSA issued a decision for Shakepay Credit Inc., a crypto-backed lending platform, separate from the Shakepay card.
