What Do Newton And MEXC Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?

Newton Only

  • Signature Program: Fee tiers assigned automatically by trailing 365-day volume: Gold CAD 100K (BTC, ETH, USDC at 1.00%), Platinum CAD 1M (0.85% and 1.00%), Diamond CAD 2M (0.50%), Onyx CAD 5M (0.05%).

  • Recurring buys: Set an amount, a coin and a frequency for automatic purchases.
  • Referral program: A friend gets a CAD 20 bonus after signing up and trading CAD 100 within 90 days; the referrer earns up to CAD 100 depending on activity.

What Happens To Your Money If Newton Or MEXC Fails?

Newton: As a CIRO investment dealer member since March 2026, cash left in a Newton account is covered by CIPF, but Newton states crypto is not protected by CIPF, CDIC or any investor protection scheme. Over 80% of assets are kept offline and Newton says it carries crypto insurance, but it gives no amount and the custodian is not named on the current page, and no proof of reserves is published. An exchange hack or insolvency would leave you relying on that insurance and on the dealer's regulatory capital rules for the portion you cannot withdraw in time.

MEXC: MEXC is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB registration, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. It is not on the CSA banned list either, but it prohibits Canada in its own terms, so an account opened from Canada can be frozen with funds inside. CIPF never covers crypto. Insurance and proof of reserves were not verified. If the exchange fails or is hacked, a Canadian has no regulator to turn to.

How Are Newton And MEXC Treated For Tax In Canada?

Newton: Selling, swapping one coin for another and staking rewards are dispositions or income; buying and withdrawing to your own wallet are not. Newton exports your history as a Koinly-formatted CSV and links directly to Koinly; there is no CRA-ready report from Newton.

MEXC: Spot sales and crypto-to-crypto trades are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export was verified, so rebuild records from trade history.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, Newton Or MEXC?

Choose Newton If

  • You want a Canadian-only CIRO dealer with free Interac and EFT funding and a simple app.
  • You trade small amounts of the majors and prefer one visible price over order book mechanics.
  • You trade over CAD 1M a year and can reach Signature tiers that cut the fee below 1%.

Choose MEXC If

  • You want a huge altcoin list: MEXC bars Canada, so compare registered Canadian dealers instead.

Is Newton Or MEXC Better For Canadians In 2026?

Newton. It ranks sixth in my table at 7.9 out of 10. MEXC is ninth at 7.0, and it is not an option for a Canadian: the User Agreement names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction, it is absent from the CSA list and I found no FINTRAC match. Newton is a CIRO investment dealer with a CSA decision dating from August 15, 2022, free Interac and EFT, and a simple app.

MEXC's draw is size: 1,425 spot base assets across 1,813 pairs. Newton lists 59 CAD pairs. If you want breadth you will find it on a registered platform like Kraken before you find it on MEXC legally.

Read my Newton review and my MEXC review for detail.

Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?

MEXC wins on the number: 0% for makers and 0.05% for takers at the base tier, or 0.04% with the MX discount, so about $0.50 on $1,000. Newton is spread-based: 1.00% to 1.15% on BTC, ETH and USDC, up to 1.60% on other assets, so $10 to $11.50 on $1,000 of Bitcoin. Signature status lowers it, to 1.00% from $100,000 of 365-day volume.

The spread is the whole cost on Newton, and it is shown before you confirm. Interac funding is free in and out, with $10,000 per request and $70,000 weekly in, and $10,000 per transaction out. MEXC has no verified CAD route and bars Canada, so its lower number never reaches a Canadian wallet.

Which Is Easier To Fund And Cash Out?

Newton says you can start with as little as $50. Interac e-Transfer funding is free up to $10,000 per request and $70,000 weekly, pre-authorized debit is free, and wires are free from $10,000 but cost $35 between $5,000 and $10,000. Withdrawals go by Interac up to $10,000 per transaction or EFT up to $50,000, with $50,000 a week combined. Identity checks run through Persona and often clear in under five minutes. MEXC has no verified CAD route and no Canadian onboarding.

Which Is Safer For Canadians?

Newton carries the stronger framework. As a CIRO member, CIPF covers cash left in the account. Newton says over 80% of assets are stored offline and that it holds crypto insurance, but gives no amount and no proof of reserves, and it has a SOC 2 Type II report. If it failed, crypto would depend on that insurance and on dealer capital rules.

MEXC is offshore for a Canadian: not registered with the CSA, no CIRO membership, no FINTRAC match, and a User Agreement that bars Canada. Insurance and proof of reserves were not verified. A frozen account has no regulator behind it, and CIPF never covers crypto.

Does MEXC's 1,425-Asset List Change Anything For A Canadian?

Coin Lists Against Access
ItemNewtonMEXC
Assets59 CAD pairs on the help list (it may lag delistings; UMA and SKL still appear)1,425 spot base assets, 1,813 spot pairs
StablecoinsUSDC offered, USDT notNot verified for Canadians
CAD pairsYesNone verified
Open to a Canadian residentYes, all provinces and territoriesNo, prohibited jurisdiction

A huge list is no use if you cannot open the account. Newton's list is short and covers the majors plus a spread of mid-caps. If a coin you want is missing, that is a reason to add a second registered platform, not to go offshore.

Who Should Choose Newton And Who Should Choose MEXC?

Choose Newton if you want a Canadian-only CIRO dealer with free Interac and EFT, a visible price, and a simple app for the majors. Heavy traders can reach lower Signature tiers.

Choose MEXC if you are outside Canada. As a Canadian, check my ranked list of exchanges for a registered platform with the coin you want.
