Both are CIRO investment dealers, so the safety question is a draw on structure. The fee question is not. NDAX charges a flat 0.20%, while Robinhood Canada moves from 0.50% to 0.95% on November 1.
NDAX Vs Robinhood: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, NDAX is the better choice (it wins on my ranking, published trading fee, coins available). Robinhood is best for former Bitbuy and Coinsquare customers who want a flat, simple fee.
Every row below comes from each company’s own pages and the Canadian registries, checked October 2026. Where a row has no fair winner, it says so.

NDAX: Flat 0.20% of trade value on every buy and sell, no tiers (fees page checked 2026-10-03). Withdrawal fees are extra and flat. Robinhood: 0.50% per order through Oct 31, 2026, 0.95% from Nov 1, 2026 (CCML fee schedule effective 2026-10-01); Robinhood says it keeps no spread. Slippage within 1% on buys and 5% on sells passes to the client. Ranges reflect each platform’s published band, not a single quote. Bank and network fees are not included.
What Do NDAX And Robinhood Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?
NDAX Only
Staking and Auto Earn: Opt-in rewards on supported assets. NDAX keeps 20% of rewards as an administration fee; the homepage advertises staking up to 13% APY.
OTC desk: Over-the-counter trading for large orders; terms and minimums are not published on the pages I could open.
API trading: Programmatic trading API, and a public instrument feed that lists the coins available.
Internal transfers: Transfers between NDAX accounts, including gift transfers, settle instantly at no cost.
Robinhood Only
Staking (announced): ETH and SOL staking from about CAD 1, listed as coming soon; CCML's schedule shows a staking fee of up to 30% of rewards on the former Coinsquare platform.
OTC desk: USD deposits and large trades go through the OTC desk at launch, with a quoted spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.
Coinsquare Trade: Request-for-quote product on the Coinsquare platform with a disclosed spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.
What Happens To Your Money If NDAX Or Robinhood Fails?
NDAX: NDAX is a CIRO investment dealer, so CIPF protects the CAD cash you hold there, but the user agreement says no virtual asset in your account is eligible for CIPF or CDIC protection. Most assets sit in cold storage with trust-company custodians in omnibus accounts, and NDAX has a SOC 2 Type 2 audit, but it publishes no insurance amount and no proof of reserves. A hack, a custodian failure or an insolvency can still hurt crypto balances. Withdraw to your own wallet if you hold coins for the long term.
Robinhood: Robinhood Canada runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO investment dealer, so it is under dealer rules and CIRO supervision. CIPF covers CAD balances within limits but never crypto. Customer crypto stays in CCML's custody arrangement with crime insurance of an unpublished amount, and no proof of reserves was found. If the firm failed or was hacked, uninsured crypto would be an unsecured claim. The platform is in a migration, so features such as limit orders and swaps are still missing.
How Are NDAX And Robinhood Treated For Tax In Canada?
NDAX: Each sale, swap and staking reward event is a disposition or income for CRA purposes, and staking rewards are income at the value received. NDAX provides CSV ledger reports and a Koinly API link but no CRA-ready report.
Robinhood: Buying with CAD is not a disposition. Selling for CAD is, and so is any later swap or spend. Robinhood gives statements and annual tax documents for past Bitbuy and Coinsquare activity; CSV and CRA-ready exports were not verified.
Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.
Which Should You Choose, NDAX Or Robinhood?
Choose NDAX If
You want a low flat 0.20% fee and a wide list of CAD-paired coins.
You want a CIRO-registered exchange that lists dozens of CAD pairs.
You want staking, an OTC desk or API access.
You mostly buy and hold and rarely cash out, since CAD withdrawals cost CAD 1.50 to 4.99.
Choose Robinhood If
You want one flat percentage fee and no Robinhood spread (0.50% to Oct 31, 2026, then 0.95%)
You are a former Bitbuy or Coinsquare customer moving to the new app
You are fine with market orders only for now
Is NDAX Or Robinhood Better For Canadians In 2026?
NDAX, on cost and track record. I rank it seventh at 7.8, and Robinhood is not in my top 10 and has no score. The platform only launched in Canada on 1 July 2026 and is still migrating Bitbuy and Coinsquare customers, so features such as limit orders and swaps are missing. See my NDAX review and Robinhood review.
Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?
NDAX charges a flat 0.20% on every buy and sell, with no tiers and no maker and taker split. On CAD 1,000 that is CAD 2. Robinhood charges 0.50% through October 31, which is CAD 5, and 0.95% from November 1, which is CAD 9.50. A round trip on CAD 1,000 costs about CAD 4 at NDAX and CAD 10 at Robinhood now, rising to CAD 19 after the change.
Cash-out reverses part of that. NDAX takes CAD 1.50 for an Interac withdrawal or CAD 4.99 for an EFT, and Robinhood's Interac withdrawal is free. On a CAD 1,000 sale that is a small number, and it favours Robinhood only if you make many small withdrawals.
What Does Robinhood's November Fee Change Do To The Gap?
It widens it. Today Robinhood costs two and a half times NDAX's fee. From November 1 it costs more than four and a half times. On a CAD 10,000 purchase that is CAD 20 at NDAX against CAD 50 now or CAD 95 at Robinhood later. NDAX's CAD 1.50 withdrawal fee does not come close to closing that.
The fee schedule is the Robinhood story. Robinhood says it keeps no spread, which is true and useful, but slippage of up to 1% on buys and 5% on sells passes to you on a market order, and market orders are all Robinhood Canada has for now.
Which Has More Coins And Tools?
NDAX lists about 76 coins on its public instrument feed as of 1 October 2026, nearly all paired with CAD. Whether USDT trades for Canadians is unclear there, so I leave it out. Robinhood lists 50+ coins against CAD only and offers no coin-to-coin swaps. USDC is available on Robinhood and USDT is not offered.
NDAX adds staking, Auto Earn, an OTC desk, API trading and instant internal transfers, and accepts joint, entity and individual accounts. Robinhood has staking on ETH and SOL announced but not live, plus a USD route through its OTC desk with a quoted spread of 0.5% to 1.85%. Funding is free by Interac at both, and NDAX also takes free wires in 0 to 1 business days, against 1 to 3 business days at Robinhood.
Which Is Safer For Canadians?
On regulatory status they are level. Both are CIRO investment dealers, and both fall under dealer supervision. CIPF protects CAD cash at both and never crypto. NDAX's user agreement says no virtual asset in an account is eligible for CIPF or CDIC protection.
The differences are in what is published. NDAX discloses its custodians and a SOC 2 Type 2 audit but no insurance figure. Robinhood claims crime insurance with an unpublished amount, and no proof of reserves was found for either. For coins you plan to hold for years, withdraw to your own wallet at either.

Who Should Choose NDAX, And Who Should Choose Robinhood?
