NDAX Vs MEXC: Which Is Better For Canadians?

For most Canadians, NDAX is the better choice (it wins on canadian status, my ranking, CAD funding). MEXC still comes out ahead on published trading fee, coins available. MEXC is best for experienced traders hunting small-cap altcoins.

What Do NDAX And MEXC Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?

NDAX Only

  • Staking and Auto Earn: Opt-in rewards on supported assets. NDAX keeps 20% of rewards as an administration fee; the homepage advertises staking up to 13% APY.
  • OTC desk: Over-the-counter trading for large orders; terms and minimums are not published on the pages I could open.
  • API trading: Programmatic trading API, and a public instrument feed that lists the coins available.
  • Internal transfers: Transfers between NDAX accounts, including gift transfers, settle instantly at no cost.

MEXC Only

  • Futures: Futures maker fee 0%. Not available to Canadians because Canada is a prohibited jurisdiction.

What Happens To Your Money If NDAX Or MEXC Fails?

NDAX: NDAX is a CIRO investment dealer, so CIPF protects the CAD cash you hold there, but the user agreement says no virtual asset in your account is eligible for CIPF or CDIC protection. Most assets sit in cold storage with trust-company custodians in omnibus accounts, and NDAX has a SOC 2 Type 2 audit, but it publishes no insurance amount and no proof of reserves. A hack, a custodian failure or an insolvency can still hurt crypto balances. Withdraw to your own wallet if you hold coins for the long term.

MEXC: MEXC is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB registration, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. It is not on the CSA banned list either, but it prohibits Canada in its own terms, so an account opened from Canada can be frozen with funds inside. CIPF never covers crypto. Insurance and proof of reserves were not verified. If the exchange fails or is hacked, a Canadian has no regulator to turn to.

How Are NDAX And MEXC Treated For Tax In Canada?

NDAX: Each sale, swap and staking reward event is a disposition or income for CRA purposes, and staking rewards are income at the value received. NDAX provides CSV ledger reports and a Koinly API link but no CRA-ready report.

MEXC: Spot sales and crypto-to-crypto trades are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export was verified, so rebuild records from trade history.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, NDAX Or MEXC?

Choose NDAX If

  • You want a low flat 0.20% fee and a wide list of CAD-paired coins.
  • You want a CIRO-registered exchange that lists dozens of CAD pairs.
  • You want staking, an OTC desk or API access.
  • You mostly buy and hold and rarely cash out, since CAD withdrawals cost CAD 1.50 to 4.99.

Choose MEXC If

  • You want a huge altcoin list: MEXC bars Canada, so compare registered Canadian dealers instead.

Is NDAX Or MEXC Better For Canadians In 2026?

NDAX. It is #7 on my ranked list at 7.8, and MEXC is #9 at 7.0. NDAX became a CIRO investment dealer on December 19, 2024, holds FINTRAC M18632135 through 2027, and covers CAD under CIPF. Its user agreement says no virtual asset is eligible for CIPF or CDIC cover.

MEXC is not on the CSA list, has no CIRO membership, and I found no FINTRAC MSB match. Its User Agreement, updated May 29, 2025, names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction. I could not verify any CAD funding.

Is MEXC's Altcoin Depth Worth Giving Up A CIRO Dealer?

MEXC's list is 1,425 spot base assets across 1,813 pairs, and NDAX's public instrument list shows about 76, nearly all paired with CAD. That is a difference of nearly twenty to one, and it is the entire argument for MEXC.

My answer is no for a Canadian. Most of those coins are small caps with thin liquidity, and the account that holds them can be frozen with your funds inside. A registered alternative with more range is Kraken, about 490 tickers for Canadians, #3 on my list. If you want a lower cost than the big brokers, NDAX itself is that.

Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?

NDAX charges a flat 0.20% on every buy and sell, with no tiers and no maker-taker split, which is CAD 2 on CAD 1,000. MEXC's spot fee is 0% maker and 0.05% taker (0.04% with the MX discount), which is at most CAD 0.50. The gap is about CAD 1.50 on a thousand dollars.

Cash-out changes the picture. NDAX charges CAD 1.50 for an Interac e-Transfer withdrawal and CAD 4.99 for EFT, and deposits by Interac or wire are free. A full NDAX round trip on CAD 1,000 costs about CAD 4 in fees plus CAD 1.50 out, around CAD 5.50. MEXC has no verified CAD route, so you would pay another platform to get crypto there and back.

A CAD 1.50 saving is not a reason to hold funds somewhere that may close the account.

What Else Does NDAX Offer Besides Trading?

More than the fee table suggests. NDAX has Staking and Auto Earn on supported assets, with a 20% administration fee on rewards, and its homepage advertises staking up to 13% APY. It runs an OTC desk for large orders, a programmatic trading API, and instant, free internal and gift transfers between NDAX accounts.

Accounts come as individual, joint with right of survivorship, or legal entity. There is a Koinly integration and a CSV ledger report for taxes, though no CRA-ready report. Verification is full KYC with government ID, usually cleared within a day. MEXC offers futures that Canadians cannot use, and I could not verify its other products, account types or tax tools.

Which Is Safer For Canadians?

NDAX keeps most assets in cold storage with BitGo and Coinbase Custody trust companies in segregated omnibus accounts, with multisig, MPC and a SOC 2 Type 2 audit. It publishes no insurance amount or proof of reserves, so hold long-term coins in your own wallet.

MEXC is custodial with no verifiable insurance, proof of reserves or cold storage share. Canada is a prohibited jurisdiction, so a freeze is a live possibility and no regulator can help. I am not going to suggest ways around its location rules.

Who Should Choose NDAX And Who Should Choose MEXC?

You can count what you gain from MEXC, and then count what you risk.

Choose NDAX if you want a low flat fee and a CIRO dealer. You want free Interac and wire deposits, a flat 0.20% and French in the app, and you mostly buy and hold.

Visit NDAX Read My NDAX Review

MEXC is not a platform I can recommend to Canadians. Its terms bar Canada and there is no CAD route. The extra coins are not worth an account that can be frozen.
