MEXC lists 1,425 spot assets and charges almost nothing, but its User Agreement names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction. Shakepay offers three assets and a prepaid card, and it takes Canadians. Choice and access pull in opposite directions here.
MEXC Vs Shakepay: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, MEXC is the better choice (it wins on my ranking, coins available). Shakepay still comes out ahead on canadian status, CAD funding. Shakepay is best for the simplest way to buy Bitcoin and Ethereum with Interac.
MEXC is offshore: not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its terms restrict Canadian residents. No Canadian investor protection applies.
Every row below comes from each company’s own pages and the Canadian registries, checked October 2026. Where a row has no fair winner, it says so.

What Do MEXC And Shakepay Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?
MEXC Only
Futures: Futures maker fee 0%. Not available to Canadians because Canada is a prohibited jurisdiction.
Shakepay Only
Shakepay Card (prepaid Visa): Issued by Peoples Trust Company, no annual fee, no credit check, free to get once fully verified. Cashback 1% at Base and Bright, 1.5% at Blue; foreign fee 3%, 1.5% or 0%. Limits $5,000 per transaction and day, $50,000 per month. Apple Pay and Google Pay supported.
BLOC (bitcoin-backed line of credit): Borrow up to $50,000 against bitcoin through Shakepay Credit Inc. APR 11.5% Base, 10.5% Bright, 9.5% Blue. No fixed payments while LTV is 50% or lower. Referral: You and the friend each get $20 when the friend invests $100 in crypto within 30 days.
What Happens To Your Money If MEXC Or Shakepay Fails?
MEXC:MEXC is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB registration, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. It is not on the CSA banned list either, but it prohibits Canada in its own terms, so an account opened from Canada can be frozen with funds inside. CIPF never covers crypto. Insurance and proof of reserves were not verified. If the exchange fails or is hacked, a Canadian has no regulator to turn to.
Shakepay: CIPF covers the cash and USD you hold at Shakepay, advertised as up to $1 million, but crypto is explicitly not covered. Customer crypto is held in trust with Coinbase Custody (at least 80% cold) and Fireblocks and BitGo hot wallets, and Shakepay's own risk statement warns that insurance may be inadequate and points users to withdraw to a private wallet. A hack, a custodian failure or a freeze can still hit crypto balances. BLOC adds liquidation risk if bitcoin falls, and Shakepay Credit operates under time-limited exemptive relief that runs three years from April 9, 2026, not full registration.
How Are MEXC And Shakepay Treated For Tax In Canada?
MEXC: Spot sales and crypto-to-crypto trades are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export was verified, so rebuild records from trade history.
Shakepay: Selling crypto, swapping it (including auto-swap), spending it with the card or repaying with it are dispositions; card cashback in bitcoin is income when received and your cost base starts at that value. Shakepay emails two CSVs (crypto and cash) but issues no tax slips, so you need Koinly or similar.
Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.
Which Should You Choose, MEXC Or Shakepay?
Choose MEXC If
You want a huge altcoin list: MEXC bars Canada, so compare registered Canadian dealers instead.
Choose Shakepay If
You want the simplest Interac-funded way to buy Bitcoin or Ethereum from a CIRO-registered firm.
You want a bitcoin cashback card or a bitcoin-backed credit line in the same app.
You will keep the account active each month to reach Bright or Blue and lower the card and loan costs.
You do not need many coins, limit orders or Lightning.
Is MEXC Or Shakepay Better For Canadians In 2026?
Shakepay, because it is the only one a Canadian can legally use. MEXC ranks ninth in my table at 7.0 out of 10, and the User Agreement names Canada as prohibited. It is not on the CSA list and I found no FINTRAC match. Shakepay, a Montreal firm launched in 2015 by Jean Amiouny and Roy Breidi, has been a CIRO investment dealer since January 8, 2025.
The product gap is as wide as the legal gap. MEXC is a trading venue for people who want hundreds of altcoins. Shakepay is a one-app routine for Bitcoin and Ethereum with a prepaid card attached.
MEXC wins by an order of magnitude on spot: 0% for makers and 0.05% for takers at the base tier, or $0.50 on $1,000, with some special pairs higher. Shakepay's spread is targeted at 0.5% to 2.0%, so $5 to $20 on $1,000, widening by up to 1.5% more in poor conditions.
That saving is academic for a Canadian. MEXC has no verified CAD route, so you would fund it with crypto, and the account itself is barred. Shakepay's Interac e-Transfer is free in and out at $5 to $10,000, which is what most Canadians actually need.
Which Is Easier To Fund And Cash Out?
Shakepay is a few taps. Interac e-Transfer in and out is free from $5 to $10,000, and a wire out is free from $10,000. You can also send cash or crypto to another user by @shaketag, instantly, up to $999. MEXC has no verified Canadian funding route, and its KYC process was not verified because Canadians are barred. Whatever MEXC's process is, it is not open to you. Support differs as well: Shakepay offers in-app and website chat plus email, with no phone line, and its Canadian iOS rating is 4.62 across 24,349 ratings. MEXC's iOS rating is 4.74 across 1,908 ratings in the Canadian store, but I could not verify its support channels, and a good app score does not change what its User Agreement says about Canada.
Which Is Safer For Canadians?
Shakepay holds a clear edge. Cash and USD are covered by CIPF, advertised up to $1 million, and crypto is not. Crypto sits in trust, at least 80% in cold storage at Coinbase Custody, the rest in hot wallets through Fireblocks and BitGo. It publishes no proof of reserves, and its own risk statement tells users to move long-term holdings to a private wallet.
MEXC is an offshore platform for a Canadian: no CSA registration, no CIRO membership, no FINTRAC match, and a User Agreement that bars Canada. Insurance and proof of reserves were not verified. A freeze on an account opened from Canada would have no regulator behind it.

Choice has no value without access. Shakepay's lack of altcoins is its real limit. There are no limit orders, one buy and one sell price refreshed every 30 seconds, and nothing past three assets. If you outgrow that, add a second registered platform rather than a barred one.
Who Should Choose MEXC And Who Should Choose Shakepay?
Choose Shakepay if you want Bitcoin and Ethereum with free Interac in and out, a bitcoin cashback card and no need for limit orders.
Choose MEXC if you are outside Canada. A Canadian who wants more coins should check my ranked list of exchanges for registered platforms with wider lists.
