MEXC lists 1,425 spot assets and charges almost nothing, but its agreement bars Canadians. Robinhood Canada lists 50-plus coins at a flat fee that rises on November 1. Here is what each really gives you.

MEXC Vs Robinhood: Which Is Better For Canadians?

For most Canadians, MEXC is the better choice (it wins on my ranking, published trading fee, coins available). Robinhood still comes out ahead on canadian status, CAD funding. Robinhood is best for former Bitbuy and Coinsquare customers who want a flat, simple fee.

Slippage within 1% on buys and 5% on sells passes to the client. Ranges reflect each platform’s published band, not a single quote. Bank and network fees are not included.

What Do MEXC And Robinhood Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?

MEXC Only

  • Futures: Futures maker fee 0%. Not available to Canadians because Canada is a prohibited jurisdiction.

Robinhood Only

  • Staking (announced): ETH and SOL staking from about CAD 1, listed as coming soon; CCML's schedule shows a staking fee of up to 30% of rewards on the former Coinsquare platform.
  • OTC desk: USD deposits and large trades go through the OTC desk at launch, with a quoted spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.
  • Coinsquare Trade: Request-for-quote product on the Coinsquare platform with a disclosed spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.

What Happens To Your Money If MEXC Or Robinhood Fails?

MEXC: MEXC is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB registration, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. It is not on the CSA banned list either, but it prohibits Canada in its own terms, so an account opened from Canada can be frozen with funds inside. CIPF never covers crypto. Insurance and proof of reserves were not verified. If the exchange fails or is hacked, a Canadian has no regulator to turn to.

Robinhood: Robinhood Canada runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO investment dealer, so it is under dealer rules and CIRO supervision. CIPF covers CAD balances within limits but never crypto. Customer crypto stays in CCML's custody arrangement with crime insurance of an unpublished amount, and no proof of reserves was found. If the firm failed or was hacked, uninsured crypto would be an unsecured claim. The platform is in a migration, so features such as limit orders and swaps are still missing.

How Are MEXC And Robinhood Treated For Tax In Canada?

MEXC: Spot sales and crypto-to-crypto trades are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export was verified, so rebuild records from trade history.

Robinhood: Buying with CAD is not a disposition. Selling for CAD is, and so is any later swap or spend. Robinhood gives statements and annual tax documents for past Bitbuy and Coinsquare activity; CSV and CRA-ready exports were not verified.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, MEXC Or Robinhood?

Choose MEXC If

  • You want a huge altcoin list: MEXC bars Canada, so compare registered Canadian dealers instead.

Choose Robinhood If

  • You want one flat percentage fee and no Robinhood spread (0.50% to Oct 31, 2026, then 0.95%)
  • You are a former Bitbuy or Coinsquare customer moving to the new app
  • You are fine with market orders only for now

MEXC: Offshore Status

Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its User Agreement (updated 29 May 2025) names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction. No Canadian investor protection applies. On paper it suits altcoin hunters, but a Canadian cannot open an account under its own terms.

Is MEXC Or Robinhood Better For Canadians In 2026?

Robinhood, and the reason is not subtle. MEXC is ninth in my ranking at 7.0 and Robinhood is outside the top 10, but MEXC bars Canadian residents in its own User Agreement. A better product you are not permitted to use is not a better choice. Read my MEXC review and Robinhood review for each in detail.

Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?

MEXC wins on paper. Spot is 0% maker and 0.05% taker, or 0.04% with the MX discount, which on CAD 1,000 is between nothing and about 50 cents. Robinhood charges CAD 5 through October 31 and CAD 9.50 from November 1. The gap is at least ten times, and it grows.

It is still the wrong comparison. MEXC has no verified CAD funding, so a Canadian would pay to convert elsewhere. Robinhood takes free Interac e-Transfer from Robinhood (your bank may charge), delivers in minutes and charges no spread. You pay a flat percentage and slippage up to 1% on buys and 5% on sells on market orders.

There is one more cost on the MEXC side that never appears in a fee table. If an account is closed for a terms breach, you may have to withdraw in a hurry, at whatever the market is doing and with no Canadian dispute route. A fee saving of a few dollars is small next to that. Robinhood's own cost is more boring: you know it before you click. That predictability is the whole pitch of its flat percentage fee.

Which Is Safer For Canadians?

Robinhood Canada runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO investment dealer with a CSA decision dated 11 October 2024. CIPF covers CAD balances within limits and never crypto. The firm is wholly owned by Robinhood Markets, Inc., a public company, after the WonderFi deal closed on 1 June 2026.

MEXC has no CSA decision, no CIRO membership and no FINTRAC match, and nothing to point to if it fails. Its custody, insurance and proof of reserves were not verified. A Canadian account can be frozen with funds inside, and using a VPN to get around the location check would breach the agreement and make that more likely.

What Does Robinhood Not Do That MEXC Does?

Quite a lot, and I would rather say so plainly. MEXC lists 1,425 spot base assets across 1,813 pairs on its public API as of 1 October 2026. It trades on an order book and offers futures with a 0% maker fee. Robinhood Canada lists 50+ coins, no limit orders, no swaps and no staking yet.

Robinhood's real advantages are not on that list. It has a regulator you can complain to, a known Canadian company, free Interac and no spread. If you want a long altcoin menu, check which registered dealer carries your coin on the ranking page and use that.

Who Should Choose MEXC, And Who Should Choose Robinhood?

Choose Robinhood if you want one flat fee, a CIRO dealer and free Interac, you are a former Bitbuy or Coinsquare customer, and you accept market orders only. I have no sign-up link for Robinhood. Choose MEXC only if you live outside Canada. A Canadian who wants altcoins should compare registered platforms first.
