For most Canadians, MEXC is the better choice (it wins on my ranking, published trading fee, coins available). Bitcoin Well still comes out ahead on canadian status, CAD funding. Bitcoin Well is best for bitcoin with cash, ATM and voucher options.

Bitcoin Well Only

  • Bitcoin ATMs: 160+ machines in Canada for cash buys, no account needed; the price is shown before the transaction and is not covered by the portal spread.
  • Recurring buy: Set a recurring Interac e-Transfer; each time it arrives, bitcoin is sent automatically to your own wallet.

  • Bitcoin Well Infinite: Private service for trades from CAD 50,000 with an Executive Bitcoin Advisor.
  • Bitcoin Well Points: A rewards programme whose points redeem for sats; no cash signup bonus found.

What Happens To Your Money If MEXC Or Bitcoin Well Fails?

MEXC: MEXC is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB registration, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. It is not on the CSA banned list either, but it prohibits Canada in its own terms, so an account opened from Canada can be frozen with funds inside. CIPF never covers crypto. Insurance and proof of reserves were not verified. If the exchange fails or is hacked, a Canadian has no regulator to turn to.

Bitcoin Well: Bitcoin Well never holds your coins, so the main exposure is the cash in transit and the quote: you pay by Interac or cash and rely on the company to send the bitcoin to your wallet. It is a FINTRAC-registered MSB only, with no CSA registration, no CIRO membership and no CIPF, and the terms mention no insurance. A wrong wallet address or a scam is your loss. The FINTRAC registration shown expires 2026-10-08, so confirm the renewal before relying on it.

How Are MEXC And Bitcoin Well Treated For Tax In Canada?

MEXC: Spot sales and crypto-to-crypto trades are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export was verified, so rebuild records from trade history.

Bitcoin Well: Each sell, bitcoin-funded bill payment or Lightning payment is a disposition, and each buy sets your cost base. Export your history as CSV by date range and load it into Koinly or another tax tool; there is no CRA-ready report.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, MEXC Or Bitcoin Well?

Choose MEXC If

  • You want a huge altcoin list: MEXC bars Canada, so compare registered Canadian dealers instead.

Choose Bitcoin Well If

  • You want bitcoin sent straight to your own wallet, on-chain or over Lightning, at a low published spread.
  • You want to buy with cash at an ATM or without a full bank-linked account.
  • You want to pay Canadian bills with bitcoin.
  • You trade above CAD 50,000 and want a private desk.

MEXC: Offshore Status

Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its User Agreement (updated 29 May 2025) names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction. No Canadian investor protection applies. On paper it suits altcoin hunters, but a Canadian cannot open an account under its own terms.

Is MEXC Or Bitcoin Well Better For Canadians In 2026?

Bitcoin Well, because a Canadian can open an account there. In my ranking MEXC is ninth at 7.0 and Bitcoin Well tenth at 6.4. The gap looks small on a score, but the two sit on opposite sides of the line that matters, which is whether you are permitted to use the service. Read my Bitcoin Well review for the Bitcoin Well side.

Why Compare A 1,425-Asset Exchange With A Bitcoin-Only Service?

Because readers search for both, and the comparison clarifies a decision. MEXC is an order-book exchange with 1,425 spot base assets on its public API as of 1 October 2026. Bitcoin Well is a Bitcoin-only service with no order book, no staking and no leverage. If you want altcoins, only one of them has any. If you want bitcoin you can hold yourself, only one of them sends it straight to your wallet.

Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?

MEXC prices spot at 0% maker and 0.05% taker (0.04% with the MX discount), so CAD 1,000 costs at most about 50 cents. Bitcoin Well charges a 1.5% spread to buy by Interac on a verified account, which is CAD 15 on CAD 1,000, and 2.0% to sell, which is CAD 20. The Lite account is 4.0%, or CAD 40. ATM and OTC trades fall outside those spreads.

The MEXC number is lower and unreachable. No CAD funding is verified at MEXC. Bitcoin Well takes Interac e-Transfer with no separate fee, cash at ATMs, and pays out to your bank with no withdrawal fee.

Bitcoin Well also offers recurring Interac e-Transfer buys that are sent to your wallet each time the money arrives. There is a points programme that redeems for sats, and a private service called Infinite for trades from CAD 50,000. Support is email only on the terms page, and no Apple or Google rating for its app turned up, since the web portal is the main product.

Which Is Safer For Canadians?

Bitcoin Well Canada Ltd. (Edmonton, parent Bitcoin Well Inc., TSX.V: BTCW, listed 30 July 2021) is a FINTRAC-registered MSB. It has no CSA decision, no CIRO membership and no CIPF. It never holds your coins, since delivery goes straight to a wallet you control, so no proof of reserves or insurance is needed. The exposure is cash in transit and the quote. A wrong address or a scam is your loss.

MEXC has no FINTRAC match, no CSA decision and no CIRO membership. It is custodial, with insurance and proof of reserves unverified, and its User Agreement bars Canada. Using a VPN to get around that would breach the agreement and raise the risk of a frozen account.
