Ledger and Trezor are the two names everyone asks about. In 2026 the real choice is closed firmware and Canadian retail availability at Ledger against open-source firmware and a three-chip design at Trezor, and both flagships list at USD 249.

Ledger Flex: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase; Ledger Recovery Key (NFC) now included with the Flex; optional paid Ledger Recover (Coincover), availability depends on country of ID document. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 7 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-08-27 (Security Bulletins 023, 024, 025: signing-review bypasses).

Which Is More Secure, Ledger Or Trezor?
Most people comparing the two brands mean their flagships, so I focus on the Ledger Flex and the Trezor Safe 7, and name the rest of each lineup where it matters. Ledger also sells the Stax, Nano X and Nano S Plus. Trezor sells the Safe 5 and Safe 3 next to the Safe 7.
The chips are the biggest design difference. The Flex uses an ST33K1M5 secure element rated Common Criteria EAL6+, and Ledger OS is not fully open source. The Safe 7 stacks three chips from three vendors: TROPIC01, which is open and auditable, an EAL6+ Optiga secure element and an STM32U5 microcontroller. Trezor's firmware changelog and signed binaries are public on GitHub. Trezor also says the Safe 7 is the first hardware wallet to use post-quantum cryptography for firmware updates, device authentication and boot. That is Trezor's claim, and I have not tested it.
Backups differ too. Both give you a seed phrase. Trezor offers 12, 20 and 24 word backups plus multi-share (Shamir) backup. Ledger gives you a 24 word recovery phrase, now includes an NFC Ledger Recovery Key with the Flex, and sells an optional paid service, Ledger Recover, run with Coincover. Whether Recover is open to you depends on the country that issued your ID. Both support a passphrase, though for Ledger that comes from its OS feature set and I could not find the line on the fetched product page.
Neither company has a clean record, and I would not trust one that claimed to. Here is the short version from my security file.
Trezor: Ledger's own research team, Donjon, used laser fault injection on the TROPIC01 chip in June 2026 and pulled out some of its secrets. It needs the device in hand, chip decapsulation and lab gear, and Trezor says the PIN, funds and backup are not exposed because that chip is one of three layers (Trezor's response). Trezor also had two customer data incidents in 2026: the ShipMonk fulfilment breach, which Trezor later said reached roughly 80,689 customers' order data, and a September phishing mail sent from a hijacked Brevo account (ShipMonk, Brevo).
Ledger: its 2020 shop database leak exposed name, address and phone for about 272,000 customers, and the data was dumped online. In December 2023 a malicious Connect Kit release drained users who signed in affected dApps (Ledger's report). The 2023 Ledger Recover launch showed that firmware could export a seed, which upset many owners. In August 2026 Ledger published bulletins 023 to 025 covering ways a compromised computer could make the screen show one thing while the device signed another, with hardened apps and SDK fixes shipped (bulletin 023). Ledger says it has no evidence of exploitation against users.
Notice that no hardware wallet seed was drained remotely in any of these. The damage was to customer data, phishing exposure and lab attacks. My view: the open-source Trezor design is easier to inspect, and Ledger's closed approach asks for more trust. Both are sound for the amount most people keep. I rank the Safe 7 first and the Flex third on my own list, and I have tested both.
Which Is Easier To Use?
The Flex has a 2.8 inch E Ink touchscreen at 480 x 600, Bluetooth (BLE 5.2), NFC and USB-C, and a battery rated at about 10 hours. The companion app is Ledger Wallet on iOS, Android and desktop. E Ink is easy on the eyes in sunlight and sips power, but it is slower to redraw than a normal screen.
The Safe 7 has a 2.5 inch colour touchscreen at 520 x 380 with haptic feedback, Bluetooth, USB-C and Qi2 wireless charging in an aluminium body with an IP54 rating. Trezor Suite runs on Android, Mac, Windows and Linux, and Trezor lists full iOS compatibility for the Safe 7, which is not true of the cheaper Safe 5 and Safe 3. If you live on an iPhone, that detail matters.
Which Supports More Coins?
Ledger says the Flex supports 500+ coins directly inside the Ledger Wallet app, naming Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP and stablecoins, with new ones added regularly. Trezor says "1000s of coins and tokens", plus more than 30 third-party wallet apps and 70,000+ dApps through them. The two numbers are not like for like: Ledger counts what its own app handles, and Trezor does not give a single figure.
For the coins most Canadians hold, either one is fine. I keep my ETH, SOL and XRP on a Trezor Safe 7 and a Tangem card, so XRP is not a problem for me, though check the maker's coin list before you buy for anything obscure.
Which Costs Less In Canada?

Canadian Resellers
Canada Computers, Best Buy Canada, Amazon Canada (Triniti Tech also listed)
Amazon Canada
Both flagships list at USD 249, so the sticker price is a tie. Ledger gives you a Canadian storefront with a CA$ price, which saves guessing the exchange rate, and three big Canadian retailers carry it. Trezor's CAD price did not show in my fetch, and its Canadian retail footprint on the official reseller page is Amazon Canada alone. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre advises buying hardware wallets directly from the manufacturer, so treat any marketplace listing with suspicion (CAFC).
How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?
Both are just a destination address. On Coinbase you answer a wallet-type question and tick "Sending to myself" for your own wallet. On Kraken, withdrawals of CA$1,000 or more to an outside wallet bring up a Travel Rule pop-up. Moving coins between wallets you own is not a taxable disposition under the CRA, but keep the records. My Canadian crypto tax guide covers what counts.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Trezor if you want open-source firmware and a design you can inspect, full iPhone support and a cheaper way in through the Safe 5 (USD 129) or Safe 3 (USD 59). It is my number one for self-custody. If you cannot decide between the two Trezor models, my Trezor Safe 5 review is a good start.
Choose Ledger if you want Canadian retail availability, CA$ pricing, a huge in-app coin list and an optional recovery service, and you accept closed firmware. The Flex and the Stax are the current touchscreen models.
: Trezor released Safe 7 firmware 2.12.5 (previous release 2.12.4 on August 19, 2026). Trezor changelog
: Trezor's Brevo email provider was breached and a fake alert was sent from its address; Trezor took the domain down within 20 minutes.
: Ledger published security bulletins 023, 024 and 025 on signing-review bypasses, with fixes shipped from August 13.
: Ledger Donjon disclosed a laser attack on Trezor's TROPIC01 chip; Trezor said no user action is needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Crypto Wallet Is Better Than Ledger?
It depends on what you want to fix. For open-source firmware, the Trezor Safe 7 is my number one pick. For a seedless card, Tangem is my number two. For a bigger touchscreen with air-gapped signing, OneKey Pro and Keystone are worth a look. I have tested all of these, and the best crypto wallets in Canada page ranks them.
What Are The Disadvantages Of Trezor?
The Safe 7 is open and auditable, but Ledger Donjon showed in June 2026 that part of its open TROPIC01 chip can be attacked with a laser in a lab, which needs the device in hand. Trezor also had customer data incidents in 2026 (ShipMonk and Brevo). Its Canadian retail presence is Amazon Canada, and the cheaper Safe 5 and Safe 3 have weaker iPhone support than the Safe 7.
Are Ledger Wallets Still Safe?
No hardware wallet seed was drained through a Ledger device in the incidents I tracked. The problems were a 2020 customer data leak, the December 2023 Connect Kit attack on dApp users, and August 2026 bulletins on signing-review bypasses that need a compromised computer. Ledger says it has no evidence of exploitation against users. Always read the amount and address on the device screen.
What Are The Top 3 Crypto Wallets?
My current top three are the Trezor Safe 7, Tangem Wallet and Ledger Flex, in that order. That is my own ranking after testing, not a lab score, and the best crypto wallets in Canada page shows the full top seven.
Can I Send Coins From A Canadian Exchange To A Ledger Or Trezor?
Yes. Withdraw to the wallet's receiving address. Coinbase asks you to tick "Sending to myself", and Kraken shows a Travel Rule pop-up on withdrawals of CA$1,000 or more. Moving coins between your own wallets is not a taxable disposition per the CRA.
Which Is Cheaper, The Ledger Flex Or The Trezor Safe 7?
Ledger Flex: USD 249 and CA$369 on the Canadian storefront; free shipping, usually ships within 24 hours. Trezor Safe 7: USD 249.
Is The Ledger Flex Or The Trezor Safe 7 Open Source?
Ledger Flex: no (Ledger OS is not fully open source; Ledger's own pages do not claim open-source firmware). Trezor Safe 7: yes: Trezor lists 'Open-source security'; firmware changelog and signed binaries published on GitHub.
Do The Ledger Flex And The Trezor Safe 7 Ship To Canada?
Ledger Flex: yes: Canadian storefront shows CA$ pricing; authorised Canadian resellers: Canada Computers, Best Buy Canada, Amazon Canada (Triniti Tech also appears on the reseller page). Trezor Safe 7: not stated; Amazon Canada is listed as an authorised reseller.
