How Much Does It Cost To Get These Wallets To Canada?

CBSA courier thresholds: shipments from outside the US and Mexico are duty and tax free only up to CAD 20, and from the US or Mexico up to CAD 40, so expect taxes on any hardware wallet. Buy from the maker or an authorised reseller only.

I keep my ETH, SOL and XRP on a Trezor Safe 7 and a Tangem card, and I have tested the Ledger Flex too, so this one is about two very different ideas of a hardware wallet. Tangem is a credit-card-sized card with no screen, no battery and no cable. The Ledger Flex is a pocket device with a 2.8 inch E Ink touchscreen. Same job, opposite design.

Which Is More Secure, Tangem Or Ledger?

Both put your keys in a certified chip. Tangem says its card uses an EAL6+ chip, and the Flex uses an ST33K1M5 Secure Element at Common Criteria EAL6+. On paper that is a tie. The differences are in what surrounds the chip.

Tangem is seedless by design: you buy a 2 or 3 card set and the cards back each other up, with a 12-word seed only as an option for advanced users. That removes the paper-backup problem, and it also means that losing every card in a set is final. The Flex uses the classic 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase, plus a Ledger Recovery Key you tap over NFC that now comes in the box. Ledger also sells an optional paid backup service, Ledger Recover, run with Coincover, and whether you can use it depends on the country that issued your ID.

Open code is a split. The Tangem app is open source on GitHub, but the card firmware is not stated as open source. Ledger does not claim open-source firmware at all.

The security record matters here, and both brands have one this year. Tangem's: in late 2024 the mobile app logged a private key for users who activated a wallet with a seed phrase and then emailed support, which Tangem says touched under 0.1% of users with no funds lost, and on July 9, 2026 Ledger's own Donjon lab published a laser attack on the card's chip that needs physical possession and about $250,000 of equipment, and which Donjon says cannot be patched because cards have no update path (Ledger Donjon's write-up). Tangem has had independent audits from Riscure (December 2023) and Cure53 (March 2026, mobile app). Ledger's: a 2020 customer-data leak that exposed contact details for roughly 272,000 buyers, the 2023 Recover backlash, the December 2023 Connect Kit supply-chain attack on dApp users, and signing-review bulletins in August 2026 that Ledger fixed with app updates. No hardware wallet seed was taken in any of these. Neither brand is clean. Both disclosed.

Which Is Easier To Use?

Tangem is the simpler object. You tap the card to your phone over NFC and the free Tangem app does the rest, protected by an access code or biometrics. There is nothing to charge and nothing to plug in. The catch is that every action runs through your phone, and there is no on-device screen to check an address on.

The Flex gives you a screen to confirm what you are signing, with Bluetooth, NFC and USB-C, and the Ledger Wallet app runs on iOS, Android and desktop. It has a battery rated around 10 hours of use, so it needs a charge now and then. If you want to read the transaction on a device you hold, the Flex is the one. If you want the lowest-friction setup for a phone-first holder, Tangem is.

Which Supports More Coins?

Tangem lists 14,100+ assets across 90+ networks. Ledger says 500+ coins are supported directly in the Ledger Wallet app, covering Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP and stablecoins, with more added regularly, and thousands more through third-party wallets. The raw numbers favour Tangem. In practice, if you hold the majors, both work; if you hold something obscure, check the exact token on each maker's supported-coin list before buying.

Which Costs Less In Canada?

A 2-card Tangem set costs a fraction of the Flex, but you are comparing a card with a device. If you want a screen, the cheaper Ledger models (Nano X, Nano S Plus) are the fairer price comparison. Duty rates for hardware wallets specifically are not published on either page, and CBSA courier rules put a charge on most orders above CA$20 from overseas, so budget for it. How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?

Neither wallet cares which exchange you use. You copy a receive address from the app and withdraw to it. On Coinbase you tick the "sending to myself" option for your own wallet, and on Kraken and NDAX withdrawals of CA$1,000 or more trigger the Travel Rule prompt. Test with a small amount first. Which Should You Choose?

Pick Tangem if you want a cheap, screenless, seedless card, you manage everything from your phone and you hold a long tail of tokens. Pick the Ledger Flex if you want a screen on the device, desktop support and a 24-word phrase you can store in your own way.
