The Trezor Safe 7 is Trezor's flagship hardware wallet, and it is my number one pick in my best crypto wallets in Canada ranking. It has a 2.5 inch colour touchscreen, Bluetooth, USB-C and Qi2 wireless charging, and it protects your keys with three chips from three vendors. Trezor's comparison page lists it at USD 249. The honest caveat: it costs about twice what the Trezor Safe 5 does, and its newest chip, the open-source TROPIC01, has already been picked apart in a lab attack.
- Best for: Canadians who want open-source firmware, a real screen and a wallet that can hold Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and XRP in one place
- Skip it if: you only want the cheapest option (see Tangem) or you want a card you can slip in a pocket
- Price: USD 249 on Trezor's site, and the checkout currency follows your delivery country
- Where it sits: number 1 of my top 7, ahead of Tangem, Ledger Flex, OneKey Pro, SafePal S1, SecuX V20 and the D'CENT Biometric Wallet
- PriceUSD 249
- Secure ElementTROPIC01 (auditable) plus NDA-free EAL6+ Optiga secure element plus STM32U5 microcontroller: three chips from three vendors
- ConnectionBluetooth (open-source encrypted), USB-C to USB-C cable, Qi2 wireless charging
- Backup12-, 20- and 24-word backup; Advanced multi-share backup (Shamir)
- Open Sourceyes: Trezor lists 'Open-source security'; firmware changelog and signed binaries published on GitHub
I keep my ETH, SOL and XRP on a Trezor Safe 7 and a Tangem card. That is not a sponsored line, it is where my own coins sit. I tested every wallet in my top 7 before ranking them, and the Safe 7 is the one I would tell a friend to buy first if they are comfortable spending the money.
Below is what the device actually is, what protects it, what it costs a Canadian, and how it plays with the exchanges you already use.

What Is The Trezor Safe 7 And Who Is It For?
The Safe 7 sits at the top of Trezor's lineup, above the Safe 5 and the Safe 3 (Trezor's compare page lists those at USD 129 and USD 59). It is a small aluminium slab with a colour touchscreen you tap to approve transactions. You see the address and amount on the device itself, which is the entire point of a hardware wallet: the screen is the part malware on your computer cannot fake.
What separates it from older Trezors is the wireless side. It pairs over Bluetooth, charges on a Qi2 pad, and Trezor says it now works fully with iPhone through Trezor Suite. Trezor also describes it as the first hardware wallet to use post-quantum cryptography for firmware updates, device authentication and boot. That is Trezor's claim, and I report it as theirs.
It suits someone who holds more than one coin. I hold ETH, SOL and XRP on mine, and that range is exactly the reason I picked it over a Bitcoin-only device. If you only ever hold Bitcoin, a cheaper wallet will do the job, and if you want something even lighter than the Safe 7, my Trezor Safe 5 review covers the middle model.
How Secure Is The Trezor Safe 7?
The design idea is layers. The Safe 7 combines TROPIC01, an open and auditable secure element, with an EAL6+ Optiga secure element that is not locked behind an NDA, and an STM32U5 microcontroller. Three chips, three vendors. If one is attacked, the others still stand between a thief and your keys.
The firmware is open source, so anyone can read it, and Trezor publishes signed binaries and a changelog on GitHub. That openness is the main reason I rank Trezor above closed-source rivals.
For backup you choose a 12, 20 or 24 word phrase, or the Advanced multi-share backup based on Shamir's scheme, which splits your recovery into several shares so no single piece is enough. A passphrase adds a hidden wallet on top of your PIN. Use one if you hold serious money, because it also protects you if somebody ever gets hold of the device and your written backup together.
One thing to know about the chip layer: in June 2026 researchers at Ledger's Donjon lab used laser fault injection to pull some secrets out of the TROPIC01 chip. It takes physical possession of the device, opening the chip and expensive lab equipment, and Trezor says your PIN, funds and backup are not exposed because that chip is one of three layers. Read Trezor's own response for its stance. A thief who steals your device from a courier van is not running a lab, but this is also why a passphrase is worth setting up.
Scams matter more than lab attacks for most of us. Trezor says it will never contact you about your wallet backup, and that any request for your backup, PIN or codes is a scam. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre gives the same advice from the other side: buy a hardware wallet directly from the maker or an authorised reseller. Never buy one second hand.
How Much Does The Trezor Safe 7 Cost In Canada?
Trezor lists the Safe 7 at USD 249. Its shop currency follows your delivery country, so the CAD total depends on the exchange rate and shipping at checkout. Check the final amount before you pay.
Trezor says it ships to over 200 countries and territories and that any country in the checkout drop-down is served. Canada is not named on that page, so confirm at checkout. Trezor also lists Amazon Canada as an authorised reseller.
The part that surprises people is duties. The Canada Border Services Agency exempts courier shipments from countries other than the US and Mexico only up to CAD 20, and above that duties and taxes apply. For shipments from the US, the CAD 40 and CAD 150 thresholds apply. The duty rate for a hardware wallet specifically is not something I can confirm, so ask the courier or CBSA, and budget for tax on top of the sticker price. You can buy through my Trezor Safe 7 link.
How Do You Set Up The Trezor Safe 7?
Set up runs through Trezor Suite and the on-device prompts. Treat the order below as the sensible sequence, and follow Trezor's on-screen prompts where they differ.
- Check where you bought it. Buy from Trezor or an authorised reseller, and check the packaging is intact.
- Install Trezor Suite. Get it from trezor.io for Android, Mac, Windows or Linux, or use the iOS app.
- Connect. Use the USB-C cable, or pair over Bluetooth with your phone.
- Install the firmware. Trezor publishes signed firmware, so install the current version Suite offers.
- Create a new wallet. Choose a standard backup of 12, 20 or 24 words, or the Advanced multi-share option.
- Write the backup on paper. Never photograph it, type it into a computer or store it in the cloud. Trezor will never ask for it.
- Set a PIN. Then consider adding a passphrase.
- Send a small test amount first. Verify the receiving address on the Safe 7 screen before you move real money.
Does The Trezor Safe 7 Work With Canadian Exchanges?
Yes, because a hardware wallet is just an address you own. You withdraw from the exchange to that address, and you confirm it on the device screen.
What changes is the paperwork prompt. Canada's travel rule has been in force since June 1, 2021, and for transfers of CAD 1,000 or more the exchange has to collect who is receiving the funds. On Coinbase you answer a wallet type question and tick a "sending to myself" box. Kraken shows a travel rule pop-up for withdrawals of CAD 1,000 or more, and sending to a third party is not allowed. NDAX asks "Who are you sending to?" and needs no extra information if you choose "sending to myself". Newton makes you save and verify each address in its Address Book with multi-factor authentication first. Wealthsimple Crypto supports external wallets with a daily limit of up to CAD 10,000 and a selfie check before your first withdrawal.
On tax, the CRA says that moving crypto between wallets you own is not a taxable disposition. You still need to keep records, and the CRA wants them for at least six years, so see my crypto taxation in Canada guide.
Which Coins Does The Trezor Safe 7 Support?
Trezor says the Safe 7 handles thousands of coins and tokens through Trezor Suite and more than 30 third-party wallet apps, with access to over 70,000 dApps through third parties. Those are Trezor's numbers.
My own holdings, ETH, SOL and XRP, are the type of mix people ask about most. One question that comes up in search is whether XRP can sit on a Trezor, and I hold mine there, but check the current coin list in Trezor Suite or your wallet app before you send anything. Trezor does not publish a Bitcoin-only firmware for the Safe 7 on the pages I checked, so if you want that, look at the BitBox02 Bitcoin-only edition.
What Are The Trezor Safe 7 Pros And Cons?
Pros
- Open-source firmware with signed binaries on GitHub
- Three chips from three vendors
- Colour touchscreen with haptic feedback
- Bluetooth, USB-C and Qi2 wireless charging
- Advanced multi-share (Shamir) backup and passphrase
- Thousands of coins and 30+ third-party apps
- Full iOS compatibility through Trezor Suite
Cons
- USD 249, the priciest Trezor
- Its TROPIC01 chip was attacked in a lab in June 2026
- CAD price and duty rate are not shown up front
- Bluetooth adds a wireless surface some people avoid
- Larger than a card wallet like Tangem
Is The Trezor Safe 7 Worth It For Canadians?
For me, yes. I put my own ETH, SOL and XRP on it, and I keep a Tangem card next to it as a second, cheaper store. The two are good partners: the Trezor gives you the screen and open code, the card gives you something thin and cheap.
If the price is a barrier, start with the Safe 5 or a Tangem card and move up later. If you are comparing it against the other big names, read my Ledger vs Trezor and Tangem vs Trezor pages. Whatever you buy, order from the maker, test with a small amount, and write the backup on paper.
What Changed For The Trezor Safe 7 Recently?
- Trezor released Safe 7 firmware 2.12.5, following 2.12.4 on August 19, 2026.
- Ledger Donjon published a laser fault attack on the TROPIC01 chip used in the Safe 7, and Trezor responded that no user action is needed.
- : Trezor launched the Safe 7, its first wallet built around the open-source TROPIC01 secure element (FXEmpire).
Has Trezor Had Security Problems?
Here is every documented security issue I could confirm for Trezor, newest first, with what it meant for owners and what was done about it.
- : Brevo newsletter provider breach, phishing from Trezor's address. An attacker got into Brevo, the email vendor, and sent a fake 'STM32 Entropy Vulnerability' alert from Trezor's account linking to a malware-style app asking for a wallet backup. About 347,000 newsletter addresses were exported; around 2,500 clicked before takedown. No Trezor systems touched. Trezor suspended the Brevo account and took the domain down within 20 minutes. (source)
- : ShipMonk shipping provider data breach. ShipMonk, a Trezor fulfilment provider, was breached, exposing order data. Names, shipping addresses, phone and email of about 13,689 customers at first; on September 2 Trezor said older records took the total to roughly 80,689 (about 67,000 more US customers). No Trezor devices or keys affected; phishing and physical-safety risk. Trezor emailed affected customers and said ShipMonk had wrongly confirmed deleting its 2019-2021 data. (source)
- : TROPIC01 chip laser attack affecting Safe 7. Ledger Donjon used laser fault injection on the open-source TROPIC01 secure element and extracted a subset of its secrets; Tropic Square then found a way to extract one more, tied to PIN functions. Needs possession, chip decapsulation and lab equipment; Trezor says PIN, funds and backup are not exposed because that chip is one of three layers. Trezor said no user action is needed and that a later chip revision is planned. (source)
- : Safe 3 supply-chain countermeasures bypassed by Ledger Donjon. Ledger Donjon reused a known voltage-glitch attack on the Safe 3 microcontroller to bypass some supply-chain countermeasures. Mainly a risk for devices tampered with before reaching the owner; Trezor says no action needed for official purchases. Trezor disclosed it on its own and described further defences; Safe 5, Model One and Model T were not affected. (source)
- : Support ticket portal breach. Someone accessed Trezor's third-party support ticket portal; Trezor says up to about 66,000 users who contacted support since late 2021 had names and emails exposed. Phishing risk; 41 users got emails asking for their seed. No funds, seeds or wallet data accessed. Trezor alerted users and told them it never asks for a seed. (source)
- : Kraken Security Labs seed extraction on Model One and Model T. Kraken showed that with physical access and a voltage glitch of the microcontroller, the encrypted seed could be extracted in about 15 minutes. Stolen or intercepted devices without a passphrase were at risk; no remote risk. Trezor said a passphrase fully protects against it and that the flaw is a chip limitation that firmware cannot fix.
