Kraken is a CSA Restricted Dealer with a deep coin list and an order book. Robinhood Canada is a CIRO dealer with a flat fee that changes on November 1, 2026. The right pick depends on how often you trade and how much you value a wide shelf.

For most Canadians, Kraken is the better choice (it wins on my ranking, published trading fee, coins available). Robinhood is best for former Bitbuy and Coinsquare customers who want a flat, simple fee.

Kraken: Kraken Pro base tier 0.40% maker / 0.80% taker (Tier 1, USD 0 volume), checked 2026-10-03. The high end is the 1% Instant Buy fee, which is charged on top of a spread Kraken does not publish. Custom orders are 1.5%. Robinhood: 0.50% per order through Oct 31, 2026, 0.95% from Nov 1, 2026 (CCML fee schedule effective 2026-10-01); Robinhood says it keeps no spread. Slippage within 1% on buys and 5% on sells passes to the client. Ranges reflect each platform’s published band, not a single quote. Bank and network fees are not included.
What Do Kraken And Robinhood Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?
Kraken Only
Kraken Pro: Order book trading with maker/taker fees from 0.40% / 0.80%, down to 0.0% / 0.10% at USD 10M monthly volume. Tiers can also be reached by holding assets on the platform (USD 20K for Tier 3).
Staking: Flexible staking with an on-chain unbonding period carries a 20% commission. Canadians cannot stake GRT or FLR, use Opt-In Rewards, or use Babylon Bitcoin staking, and ETH2.S cannot be traded.
Kraken+: Subscription giving zero trading fees on up to USD 10,000 (or CAD equivalent) a month in Buy, Sell and Convert, with spreads and card fees still applying. The subscription price was not retrieved.
Recurring buys: Recurring trades are charged the 1% Instant Buy fee plus a spread.
Robinhood Only
Staking (announced): ETH and SOL staking from about CAD 1, listed as coming soon; CCML's schedule shows a staking fee of up to 30% of rewards on the former Coinsquare platform.
OTC desk: USD deposits and large trades go through the OTC desk at launch, with a quoted spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.
Coinsquare Trade: Request-for-quote product on the Coinsquare platform with a disclosed spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.
What Happens To Your Money If Kraken Or Robinhood Fails?
Kraken: Kraken is a CSA Restricted Dealer, which brings regulator oversight, loss notifications and purchase caps, but its client assets are not covered by CIPF and Kraken says so. Kraken publishes third-party proof of reserves (June 2026 ratios 100.3% to 102.9% for the five largest assets), which shows assets were held at the snapshot but is not insurance, and no insurance amount is published. Residual risks are exchange hacks, an insolvency where you are an unsecured creditor, and restrictions that can force you to withdraw coins Kraken later removes for Canada.
Robinhood: Robinhood Canada runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO investment dealer, so it is under dealer rules and CIRO supervision. CIPF covers CAD balances within limits but never crypto. Customer crypto stays in CCML's custody arrangement with crime insurance of an unpublished amount, and no proof of reserves was found. If the firm failed or was hacked, uninsured crypto would be an unsecured claim. The platform is in a migration, so features such as limit orders and swaps are still missing.
How Are Kraken And Robinhood Treated For Tax In Canada?
Kraken: Selling, converting one coin to another and staking rewards are taxable events. Kraken exports ledger and trade history as CSV and links to Koinly, which can produce a CRA Schedule 3 report; Kraken does not produce a CRA-ready report itself.
Robinhood: Buying with CAD is not a disposition. Selling for CAD is, and so is any later swap or spend. Robinhood gives statements and annual tax documents for past Bitbuy and Coinsquare activity; CSV and CRA-ready exports were not verified.
Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.
Which Should You Choose, Kraken Or Robinhood?
Choose Kraken If
You want the widest coin list available to Canadians and a real order book.
You will use Kraken Pro rather than Instant Buy to keep trading costs near 0.4% to 0.8%.
You value published proof of reserves over a CIRO dealer.
Choose Robinhood If
You want one flat percentage fee and no Robinhood spread (0.50% to Oct 31, 2026, then 0.95%)
You are a former Bitbuy or Coinsquare customer moving to the new app
You are fine with market orders only for now
Is Kraken Or Robinhood Better For Canadians In 2026?
Kraken is the stronger all-rounder. Robinhood is the simpler one. On my ranked list Kraken sits at #3 with a 9.2. Robinhood is not in my top 10, so it carries no score from me.
The regulatory flavour differs. Robinhood Canada runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO investment dealer, so CAD balances fall under CIPF limits. Kraken is a CSA Restricted Dealer with the OSC as principal regulator and is not a CIRO member. Kraken's own pages say its client assets are not covered by CIPF. Neither one covers crypto, ever.
What Kraken gives back is range. After its Canadian restrictions it offers about 490 tickers (a derived estimate, not an official count) against 50-plus on Robinhood, plus an order book on Kraken Pro, Lightning withdrawals and staking. Robinhood is CAD pairs only, with market orders and no coin-to-coin swaps at launch.
Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?
Take a CAD 2,000 buy. On Kraken Pro at the base tier, a taker order costs 0.80%, which is CAD 16, and a maker order costs 0.40%, which is CAD 8. Kraken's Instant Buy is 1%, or CAD 20, and it sits on top of a spread Kraken does not publish. Robinhood charges one flat fee and says it keeps no spread: 0.50% (CAD 10) through October 31, 2026, then 0.95% (CAD 19) from November 1.
Now the exit. Selling the same CAD 2,000 at those rates costs another CAD 16 on Kraken Pro as a taker, or CAD 19 on Robinhood after the change. Kraken then charges CAD 10 to send Canadian dollars out by Interac e-Transfer. Robinhood says its e-Transfer withdrawal is free from its side. Round trip, ignoring price moves, that is about CAD 42 on Kraken Pro as a taker against about CAD 38 on Robinhood after November 1. Place maker orders on Kraken Pro and the same round trip falls to roughly CAD 26.
So the cheaper platform flips with your habits. Occasional market-order buyers who cash out often can come out slightly ahead on Robinhood. Anyone who uses limit orders on Pro will beat it.
Which Is Safer For Canadians?
Both are registered, both are custodial, and neither lets you claim CIPF on crypto. The differences are in what each shows you.
Kraken publishes third-party proof of reserves. The June 30, 2026 snapshot showed BTC at 102.9%, ETH at 100.5%, SOL at 100.6%, XRP at 102.3% and ADA at 100.3%. That proves assets were held at that moment. It is not insurance, and Kraken publishes no insurance amount.
Robinhood's Canadian arm says it carries crime insurance but does not publish the amount, and I found no proof of reserves. The CIRO dealer status is the better regulatory badge. If either firm failed or was hacked, uninsured crypto would be an unsecured claim. For anything you hold long term, withdraw to a wallet you control.
What Does Robinhood's Fee Change On November 1 Mean?
Robinhood's fee schedule from Coinsquare Capital Markets, dated October 1, 2026, sets the flat fee at 0.50% through October 31 and 0.95% from November 1. That is a 90% jump in the fee itself. It is still a single number with no spread on top, which many people prefer to Kraken's tier tables.
The product is also young. Robinhood crypto launched in Canada on July 1, 2026, after the WonderFi purchase closed on June 1. Former Bitbuy and Coinsquare customers keep their verification when they move. Limit orders and swaps are still missing, and staking on ETH and SOL is listed as coming soon. The Canadian App Store rating is 2.90 across 97 ratings, a small sample, against Kraken's 4.62 across 5,662.
If you plan to buy before the end of October, the lower fee is real. After that, run the numbers again.
Who Should Choose Kraken And Who Should Choose Robinhood?
Short version: I would send an active trader to Kraken Pro and a once-a-month buyer to whichever app they already use.
Choose Kraken if you want range and control. You will use Kraken Pro rather than Instant Buy, you want about 490 tickers and an order book, and you value published proof of reserves over a CIRO dealer badge.
Choose Robinhood if you want one flat fee on a CIRO dealer. You are a former Bitbuy or Coinsquare customer, you buy in CAD with market orders, and you can live with fewer coins and missing features while the platform matures.
Coinsquare Capital Markets published the Robinhood Canada fee schedule: 0.50% through October 31, 2026 and 0.95% from November 1.
Kraken republished its fee schedule with Pro spot at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker for the entry tier.
Robinhood launched crypto trading in Canada.
Robinhood completed its WonderFi acquisition.
The CSA issued its Restricted Dealer decision for Payward Canada Inc. (Kraken), which also began free Interac e-Transfer deposits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Robinhood Fees Go Up In November 2026?
Yes. The Coinsquare Capital Markets fee schedule dated October 1, 2026 shows 0.50% per trade through October 31, 2026 and 0.95% from November 1, 2026. Robinhood says it keeps no spread on top of that fee.
How Much Does Kraken Charge To Withdraw Canadian Dollars?
Kraken lists a CAD 10 fee for an Interac e-Transfer withdrawal, with a limit of CAD 10,000 per transaction. Deposits by Interac are free. Other CAD withdrawal methods and fees could not be retrieved, so check the funding page before you rely on one.
Is Robinhood Canada The Same Company As Bitbuy And Coinsquare?
The Canadian platform runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., which Bitbuy accounts moved to in May 2024. Robinhood closed its purchase of WonderFi on June 1, 2026 and launched crypto trading in Canada on July 1, 2026. Existing Bitbuy and Coinsquare verification carries over.
Which Is Better For Staking, Kraken Or Robinhood?
Kraken, for now. It offers flexible staking with a 20% commission on rewards, though Canadians cannot stake GRT or FLR or use Opt-In Rewards. Robinhood lists ETH and SOL staking as coming soon, and the old Coinsquare schedule shows a staking fee of up to 30% of rewards.
Can I Move Crypto Between Kraken And Robinhood?
Yes, on-chain. Robinhood allows sends and receives from day one with no Robinhood fee, and Kraken supports many networks per asset. Check each coin's network before sending, because Kraken sets its own withdrawal fee per coin and the network fee applies on top.
Do Kraken And Robinhood Have Limit Orders?
Kraken: Yes, on Kraken Pro with maker fees from 0.40%. Robinhood: No; market orders in CAD pairs only at launch.
Kraken: Yes, Instant Buy adds a spread on top of the 1% fee; Pro has no spread but charges maker/taker fees. Robinhood: Robinhood says it keeps no spread, so the stated 0.50% (0.95% from Nov 1, 2026) is its fee.

Kraken: Kraken offers business accounts globally; Canadian availability is not verified. Robinhood: Corporate and wealth clients are served through a relationship manager.
