Kraken is a registered Restricted Dealer in every province. MEXC is an offshore exchange whose own agreement bars Canadians. The fee and coin-count gap favours MEXC on paper, so here is why it should not decide anything.

Kraken Vs MEXC: Which Is Better For Canadians?

For most Canadians, Kraken is the better choice (it wins on canadian status, my ranking, CAD funding). MEXC still comes out ahead on published trading fee, coins available. MEXC is best for experienced traders hunting small-cap altcoins.

What Happens To Your Money If Kraken Or MEXC Fails?

Kraken: Kraken is a CSA Restricted Dealer, which brings regulator oversight, loss notifications and purchase caps, but its client assets are not covered by CIPF and Kraken says so. Kraken publishes third-party proof of reserves (June 2026 ratios 100.3% to 102.9% for the five largest assets), which shows assets were held at the snapshot but is not insurance, and no insurance amount is published. Residual risks are exchange hacks, an insolvency where you are an unsecured creditor, and restrictions that can force you to withdraw coins Kraken later removes for Canada.

MEXC: MEXC is not registered with the CSA, is not a CIRO member and has no FINTRAC MSB registration, so no Canadian regulator oversees it. It is not on the CSA banned list either, but it prohibits Canada in its own terms, so an account opened from Canada can be frozen with funds inside. CIPF never covers crypto. Insurance and proof of reserves were not verified. If the exchange fails or is hacked, a Canadian has no regulator to turn to.

How Are Kraken And MEXC Treated For Tax In Canada?

Kraken: Selling, converting one coin to another and staking rewards are taxable events. Kraken exports ledger and trade history as CSV and links to Koinly, which can produce a CRA Schedule 3 report; Kraken does not produce a CRA-ready report itself.

MEXC: Spot sales and crypto-to-crypto trades are dispositions for CRA purposes. No tax export was verified, so rebuild records from trade history.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, Kraken Or MEXC?

Choose Kraken If

  • You want the widest coin list available to Canadians and a real order book.
  • You will use Kraken Pro rather than Instant Buy to keep trading costs near 0.4% to 0.8%.
  • You value published proof of reserves over a CIRO dealer.

Choose MEXC If

  • You want a huge altcoin list: MEXC bars Canada, so compare registered Canadian dealers instead.

MEXC: Offshore Status

Offshore Not registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators, and its User Agreement (updated 29 May 2025) names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction. No Canadian investor protection applies. On paper it suits altcoin hunters, but a Canadian cannot open an account under its own terms.

Is Kraken Or MEXC Better For Canadians In 2026?

Kraken, and it is not a close call. In my ranking Kraken sits third at 9.2 out of 10 and MEXC ninth at 7.0, but the number that matters is simpler than a score: one of these lets a Canadian open an account under its own rules and the other does not.

MEXC has real strengths on paper, a 0% maker fee and a huge altcoin menu. It also names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction. If you want a registered route, read my Kraken review or the full ranking of Canadian exchanges. Kraken is also where I would send a beginner who expects to graduate to cheaper order-book trading later.

Which Costs Less When You Actually Trade?

Start with CAD 1,000 on Kraken Pro. At the base tier that is CAD 4 as a maker and CAD 8 as a taker, falling as your 30-day volume or assets on the platform rise. Instant Buy is CAD 10 on the same trade plus a spread Kraken does not publish, which is why I keep calling it the pricier door. Getting CAD out by Interac e-Transfer costs CAD 10, while deposits by Interac are free.

MEXC prices spot at 0% maker and 0.05% taker, or 0.04% with its 20% MX discount, so the same CAD 1,000 costs between nothing and about 50 cents. That is the lowest spot fee in this whole comparison set. But no CAD funding route was verified for MEXC, so a Canadian would first pay to move money in some other way, and I cannot price that step from any source I trust.

Which Is Safer For Canadians?

Kraken is a CSA Restricted Dealer with the OSC as principal regulator (decision of 1 April 2025) and holds FINTRAC MSB registration M19343731, valid to 25 August 2028. It is not a CIRO member, and its own terms make every Canadian user acknowledge that client assets are not covered by the Canadian Investor Protection Fund. CIPF never covers crypto anywhere.

MEXC has no CSA decision, no CIRO membership and no FINTRAC match that I could find. Cold storage share, insurance and proof of reserves were not verified on a primary page. If it fails or freezes you, there is no Canadian regulator to call. That is a different category of risk from Kraken's, not a bigger version of the same one.

Why Does Kraken's Coin List Look Smaller Than MEXC's?

Kraken shows about 490 tickers once its own Canada restriction list is removed. That figure is derived from its public API, not an official count. MEXC lists 1,425 spot base assets across 1,813 pairs on its public API as of 1 October 2026. The two numbers were counted differently, so treat the gap as roughly three to one and not as an exact ratio.

Kraken bars USDT, DAI, PYUSD, USDS, RLUSD, EURC, PAXG and more than 100 other assets for Canadians. A bigger list helps only if you can legally buy from it.

Who Should Choose Kraken, And Who Should Choose MEXC?

Choose Kraken if you want the widest list a Canadian can legally buy, a real order book, and published proof of reserves over a CIRO dealer's protections. Keep to Kraken Pro to hold costs near 0.4% to 0.8%. Open a Kraken account if that fits.

Choose MEXC only if you are not a Canadian resident. For readers in Canada, the honest answer from the profile is to compare registered dealers instead, and the ranking page does that.

What Has Happened With Kraken And MEXC?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Canadians Legally Open A MEXC Account?

MEXC's User Agreement, last updated 29 May 2025, names Canada as a prohibited jurisdiction. MEXC is not on the CSA banned list either, so this is a terms problem more than a regulator ruling, but the practical result is the same: an account opened from Canada can be frozen with the funds inside.

Is Kraken Pro Cheaper Than Instant Buy On Kraken?

Yes. Kraken Pro starts at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker at the base tier, while Instant Buy charges a 1% fee (1.5% on custom orders) on top of a spread Kraken does not publish. Anything beyond a small first purchase belongs on Pro.

Does Kraken Publish Proof Of Reserves?

Yes. Its independent-accountant snapshot dated 30 June 2026 showed Bitcoin at 102.9%, Ethereum at 100.5%, Solana at 100.6%, XRP at 102.3% and Cardano at 100.3%. It shows assets were held on that date. It is not insurance, and Kraken publishes no insurance amount.

What Does Kraken Charge To Stake?

Flexible staking with an on-chain unbonding period carries a 20% commission on rewards. Canadians cannot stake GRT or FLR, use Opt-In Rewards or use Babylon Bitcoin staking. MEXC staking terms were not verified for this page.

Which Records Do I Need For Tax On Kraken?

Kraken exports ledger and trade history as CSV and links to Koinly, which can produce a CRA Schedule 3 report. Kraken does not produce a CRA-ready report itself. MEXC has no verified tax export, so records would have to be rebuilt from trade history.
