D'CENT's Biometric Wallet adds a fingerprint sensor and Bluetooth at USD 79, and the ELLIPAL X Card is a USD 59 screenless NFC card. The honest one-line difference: D'CENT is more capable but had an unexplained September 2026 theft path, while ELLIPAL is simpler with one seven-year-old public finding.

D'CENT has a fingerprint sensor and Bluetooth. The ELLIPAL X Card is a screenless NFC card. And one of the two has had a very bad September. I will say which, and what it does and does not mean, before getting to features.
Which Is More Secure, D'CENT Or ELLIPAL?
Start with the incident. On September 16, 2026, unauthorized transfers began from addresses whose recovery phrase had ever been entered into D'CENT's software App Wallet and had signed on app versions before 8.1.0. That includes hardware-wallet seeds that were ever restored into the App Wallet, across Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRPL, TRON and EVM chains. D'CENT told users to update, create new recovery phrases and move assets, said it is working with law enforcement, withheld technical details and had not published a cause as of its September 17 report. It did not state a loss figure (D'CENT's incident report). The lesson is narrow but real: if you used the App Wallet at any point, your phrase is suspect even if you also own the hardware.
On the hardware itself, the Biometric Wallet uses a CC EAL5+ chip, a capacitive fingerprint sensor (up to two fingerprints, or a 4 to 8 digit PIN), a 24-word recovery phrase made on the device and a passphrase option. The ELLIPAL X Card uses a CC EAL6+ chip, a 6 to 16 digit Card-PIN, factory reset after 10 wrong attempts and a 12, 18 or 24 word seed. EAL6+ is the higher level on paper. I could not confirm open-source firmware for either.
ELLIPAL's public finding is from June 2019, when Ledger Donjon showed that someone with physical access could extract the seed (Ledger's write-up). Old, physical and with no 2026 update that I found. Has it been hacked since? Not in my records. D'CENT's is a live, unexplained 2026 theft path in one software product.
Which Is Easier To Use?
D'CENT is more capable: on-device screen with navigation buttons, fingerprint unlock, Bluetooth LE 4.1 and USB-C, a 530 mAh battery and the DCENT app. ELLIPAL is the minimalist one: tap a card, use the app on Android or iOS, with WalletConnect for dApps and the wallet created offline on a separate Starter. Is D'CENT a cold wallet? The Biometric Wallet is a hardware wallet whose keys stay on the device, but Bluetooth makes it less air-gapped than a card or QR-only device.
Which Supports More Coins?
D'CENT: 10,000+ assets across 100+ blockchains, with custom token accounts added manually. ELLIPAL: 10,000+ tokens across 45+ blockchains, and NFTs on Ethereum and Polygon. The asset counts match. D'CENT reaches more chains. Can you lose XRP in a cold wallet? Yes, if you lose the device and the phrase; both can hold it.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?
Same for both. Withdraw from Coinbase, Wealthsimple Crypto or Newton to your own address and tick "sending to myself" where asked. Moving coins between your own wallets is not a disposition for the CRA; keep records for six years. If you were affected by the D'CENT incident, move assets to a new wallet with a new phrase.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose ELLIPAL if you want the simpler, cheaper card and a clearer Canadian delivery story. Choose D'CENT if you want a fingerprint and screen on the device, you never touch the App Wallet, and you accept that the September incident is unexplained. I would wait for D'CENT's post-mortem. If you want something with more history, see ELLIPAL Vs Trezor and D'CENT Vs Trezor.
If you own a D'CENT and ever restored its phrase into the App Wallet, do not wait for the cause to be published. Update the app, create a new recovery phrase on a fresh device and move your assets, as D'CENT itself advised. If you never touched the App Wallet, your risk is lower but I would still read the incident report. Whichever card or device you pick, buy it from the maker and keep the backup on paper, not in a photo.
